Mortensen: Carl "upped the ante at the last second to a 2nd rd pick"

On Countdown:

Said that Carl Peterson in a last minute negotiating tactic upped the ante to a 2nd round pick for Tony Gonzalez and the trading partners balked.

Also says LJ's inactive status is just for team violations, not the legal issues.

milkman 10-19-2008 09:20 AM

Adam Shefter just said the same thing.

Said a Chief official called the Pack 5 minutes before the deadline to tell them that he wanted a 2nd round pick instead of a third.

Also said that LJ was late for the team's Charter to Carolina, and that he was told if he was late again, he would be disciplined, and that tardiness for team meetings has been an ongoing problem.

Delano 10-19-2008 09:20 AM

Why would any other GM in the league want to deal with this prick?

"We got a deal for Tony? Great.. Oh now you want more?"

That's like trying to buy lemonade from a greedy child.

Exactly.

And why does everyone keep leaving out WHY he asked for a 2nd round pick?

The Packers 3rd involved several conditionals. Had we traded TG to the Pack, and he not played 3 seasons, KC would have owed the Packers a pick. Had he not reached certain statisticl benchmarks, Kc would have owed the Pack another pick.

Had it just been a flat 3rd, TG would be a Packer, IMO.

A conditional 3rd?! **** that. What if Tony Gonzalez had three straight 800+ receiving seasons? Did we get another pick?

If anyone is mad at Carl for not trading TG for a CONDITIONAL 3rd round pick (with the conditions only effecting us)...they are off their rocker.

My thoughts exactly.

But it tells you what they (Packers) think about his age, and his willingness to play for 2-3 more years. They're covering their asses.

I know some people have money to just spend without caring...but anyone that subscribes to that shit has to be pretty freaking oblivious...I am willing to bet the majority of subscribers are parents buying that for a Christmas present to their young kid or something.

Here's the question I have.
Who exactly is reporting that?

If it's a local source, I don't have any faith in their credibility.

And while I don't think that either Mort or Shefter are much more reliable, the fact that neither mentions it leads me to believe that the conditions are spun by Carl, that the local sources are more than happy to sell as Kool-aid to the KC market.

Precisely!!! But hell, I heard this on Denver Sports Radio several days ago and Carl wanted the same trade as what was given up for Shockey. Which I think is fair. Carl f'd up by not knowing what he wanted from the get go and standing firm. But then we're talking about Carl so he probably calculated this move which f'd our TE and the Chiefs in the long run.:cuss:

IIRC, Glazer was the first to report it the day of the deadline. Schefter mentioned it as well. It's been mentioned several times around here, only to have people gloss over it.

Even Mort just mentioned it in his report, he just didn't go into detail.

It makes all the sense in the world to me. The Pack were covering their ass in trading for a 32 year old at a luxury position, who has stated since camp that he wasn't committed to play past 2009.

Shockey is 4-5 years younger than TG. It's not the same.

In that case, my only problem is that the Chiefs waited until the last minute.

According to Shefter, the Pack thought they had the deal done over an hour before the deadline.

but shockey is always injured, and not 50% of tg anyway so yeah its the same. in 5 years Shockey puts out as much as 2 years of tg with a DECENT qb

Chiefshrink 10-19-2008 10:13 AM

Were talking Carl here and Carl has a Hall of Famer who has literally no major injuries and missed hardly any games and still produces at a high level(with a good QB of course). So in Carl's mind he is worth a 2nd minimum. Should we have got a 1st? You can definitely make the case based on previous comments. But as we all know this is a business and nobody will give up a1st for a 32yr old TE regardless of stats and the fact he plays like a WR with very little injury history.

Ditka just nailed it on NFL Countdown.

Tony and LJ are in Ditka's Doghouse.

When I was making $14k a year, we could chop block, hit helmet to helmet, do whatever the hell we wanted to on the football field, now it's about protecting multi-million dollar investments."

so....WHY did Carl change prices at the last minute? That borders on the bizarre. Seriously. Well-run organizations aren't as fickle as junior high girls.

Shockey plays about half the time. Gonzalez hasn't missed a game in I don't know how long.

You're a good kid. And I wish you well in your sports journalism endeavors. But on this issue, you and your entire group are showing how complete weakness on this position. You're like a turtle turned over on it's belly.

I bet TG is glad he came back to suffer through more of this crap because Carl was too much of a one who sucks the penis to let him go to a real NFL franchise.
