Singletary is not going to walk the sidelines in a suit.

lol....Berman: "I'm disgusted"

they're taking it personally

How many posts until someone says we should hire him?

Rain Man 10-20-2008 06:08 PM

It'll be interesting to see how Singletary does.

My general philosophy is that I don't like coaches who got there through family connections (e.g., Nolan), and I question whether being a good player makes one a good coach. Singletary seems to be a guy with some smarts, though.

I'm shocked it hasn't happened already.

That's the only reason I started a thread - figured someone would take the bait.

Rain Man 10-20-2008 06:09 PM

You have to admit, he'd be a massive improvement. Of course, that's pretty much true of anybody with a brain stem.

No wait for next week; Niners can Nolan now

FOXSports' Jay Glazer reports that the 49ers have decided not to wait for their Week 9 bye to fire Mike Nolan. Nolan is out as head coach effective immediately.
The Niners let the news leak out a week before they planned to take action, which would have made the entire week and next Sunday's game against Seattle a circus. Assistant head coach/linebackers Mike Singletary has agreed to step in. Nolan took over in '05 with the organization in shambles. He is a good football coach, but didn't get results after a promising 7-9 2006 campaign. His record ended up at 18-37 in four seasons. Nolan is certain to find work in 2009, probably as a defensive coordinator. Oct. 20 - 7:54 pm et

You gotta wonder how much of this is due to the epic setbacks that were Alex Smith and Vernon Davis. I think he's a decent coach, and if they had made better decisions there, he could still have his job.

The Franchise 10-20-2008 06:14 PM

So if we shit can Gunther.....is Nolan worth a look as the DC?

I think Davis still has a chance to be very good in the right place. He is hardly used. He does have some bad habits but those can be "unteached".

Those 2 were just bad picks...

Davis can't figure out how to play football for his life...hell of an athelete though. Smith has bust all over him, i still think Davis has a chance.

Deberg_1990 10-20-2008 06:22 PM

and yet Herm still has a job...

CrazyPhuD 10-20-2008 06:23 PM

Lol bay area is 0-2 on head coaches now.

It's pretty much pointless to get rid of herm now, wait till the offseason, they have their replacement on their staff, we don't.

Might as well bring in Jim Mora.ROFL

TrebMaxx 10-20-2008 06:31 PM

I don't understand teams firing their coaches in mid season. I bet the Lambs are regretting it by now.

Jr. or Sr. ? Jr. is already in line for the HC job in Seattle. Sr.? Uh, no thanks. (although ANYONE we would bring in out of the organization would appear to be an improvement)

Bane 10-20-2008 06:33 PM

I dont think any 1 person can help this team anytime soon. They have to do a complete ulnoad and rebuild. Its not a diesel engine in need of a power pack.

Perhaps,

I used to think that canning him now would be pointless, but at the very least it would send a message to that players that losing in this fashion wont be tolerated.

The Bad Guy 10-20-2008 06:37 PM

Nolan is an awful HC.

He's constantly trying to play a 3-4 when he doesn't have the players to play it. Patrick Willis is the best defensive player in the NFL, and is better suited to play a 4-3.

My brother is a 49ers fan, and literally did a dance he was so happy tonight that Nolan was canned.

The Bad Guy 10-20-2008 06:37 PM

I don't think they have his replacement on staff.

I think Mike Holmgren is going to take over as GM/HC next year.

But at the same time, do you want to play for somebody who you don't believe in anymore?

Heck, the whole board is almost unanimous that the team has quit on this coaching staff?

As a Maryland Terrapin fan, I hope you are correct. The guy could be a real play maker if he learns his position.

I wonder how he'd do on defense? 6'3", 250......just sayin' is all.

because the new coach gets the rest of the year to evaluate the players before the draft and FA instead of wasting the offseason.

Oh i agree.

It would not hurt me one bit if Herm was canned tonight.

and yes, the team has quit on him. LenDale (Cheeseburger) White outran the entire Chiefs defense. ROFL

ChiefsCountry 10-20-2008 06:56 PM

Team quit when Brodie went down. All hope was gone then.

Coach 10-20-2008 07:27 PM

FWIW, the name Greg Manusky should ring a bell to some of the old-timers here.

He's currently the interm DC for the 49ers.

Lurker2:-)=) 10-20-2008 07:38 PM

I only wish they'd keep a microphone on Mike Singletary at all times on the sidelines... it would be interesting to to hear "motivation" in action.

I'm not sure I'd want a dude that likes to grab player's balls as a coach!

Is he going to get called for a bullshit holding penalty on their first field goal?

ILChief 10-21-2008 05:37 AM

yet Herm and Carl remain gamefully employed.
