Green do's and dont's
Some posters were saying Green didn't do well.
I saw Green nail snoooooop on 3rd and 15 for a first down. I saw Green run for a first down on 4th and 10. I saw Green execute the two minute drill with a beautiful pass, with an AWESOME catch in the corner of the endzone. I have high expectations, but not unrealistic ones...For his first game....I thought he did pretty damn well. |
Green was sloppy - he and the WRs are completely out of sync.
Alexander MUST step up - we cannot rely on Gonzo and rook Minnis as our entire passing attack! |
He did better in the preseason.
Not giving up on him, just saying he needs to be more consistent. The whole offense was out of sync. It'll get better though.:) |
The one thing I was disappointed about was the accuracy on his long ball.
Otherwise, I still have confidence in him. |
Stevieray - Those were the good points, but he threw a lot of balls today that could have been picked off and into double and triple teams. If he could have hit the WR's more then 3 x's yesterday (2 drops not his fault) we would have been a completely diff team.

I agree that Green wasn't as bad as everyone is making him out to have been. Granted, it took him a while to get going, and that needs to change. And, he wasn't able to hit a receiver all day, and that needs to change. But, I really liked what I saw from him when the pressure was on in the fourth quarter. What needed to happen was this:
- DA and Snoop need to make some plays. I'll grant them that they were playing aganist two top-flight CBs, and I'll admit that we needed to focus on the indise more in order to beat the Raiders. But, we DO need to be able to hit the wide outs once in a while. Green made a few bad throws, but there was a few catchable balls that weren't caught, too. - Get Ricks involved in the game earlier! ESPECIALLY when, as I just said, we're not going to be able to go outside as much b/c of the great CBs. They were doubling up on Gonzo so much...I can't believe we didn't even throw to Ricks until the fourth. That was dumb. - Get the RBs more involved. If we can't run the ball, the pass to them. Both Priest and T-Rich are billed as playmakers...so get them the damn ball. Richardson got it once in a while, but it needs to be more. In summary, Green wasn't perfect, but he wasn't all bad, either. And he played well under pressure at the end. Even in this game, which seemed to be an off day for him, I'd rather have him than Elvis. |
Just like the scouting reports says: Green hangs onto the ball way to long. He has only 20 starts (8-12) so he doesnt have a lot of experience yet.
He made a courageous 4th and 10 play that kept the Chiefs in the game. That was the highlight. Other than that, I thought he was every bit as good as Todd Collins. How did the Raiders acquire Rich Gannon again? What did the Chiefs give up for Trent Green?? |

Bad route running by the WR's, and they hardly cought anything. |
I agree with you on getting Mikhael involved earlier. Yes he did miss a pass early on, but so did Tony G., Derrick A., and Priest H. Then he caught those two back to back passes. But the last play of the game, when Trent Green threw that pass to Mikhael, MR told me that he was a little scared to catch it because he saw one of the defenders out of the corner of his eye coming at him with his arm extended.
Shades of a clothesline hit. |
Pack
In the immortal words of my Grandfather, "When you don't know what your talkin' bout', you should politely sit down.......................AND SHUT YUR FRIGGIN PIE HOLE" He was no Edgar Allen Poe, but he did have a very unique way of expressing hisself. Chi ~thinks Pack needs to follow some wise advice. |
Ethelyn,
I'm a big MR supporter. HOWEVER, this is the NFL. He's got to make the catch, even if he is going to get hit. Having said that, I think the pass was too high for him to catch it, but I'm a bit concerned when he says that he was afraid to catch it because of the on coming hit. |
I taped the game, and watched it again last night after the late game. I watched the second quarter twice.
Green overthrew or just poorly threw 14 passes. 14 uncatchable passes that were not examples of the qb getting rid of the ball by tossing it in the area of the reciever. 14 terrible passes. He only threw 30 something passes. His pass coverage was not to blame. DA's performance didn't help. Menace's inability to consistently get off the jam didn't help. Gonzo was wide open 5 times that I counted when the ball was thrown elsewhere. It was obvious Green is not completely comfortable with his targets yet. As bad as Girlbac could be you could tell he had a comfort zone with DA and Gonzo. Sometimes too comfortable. Green hasn't gotten that yet, and it may yet come. He just doesn't seem comfortable with his recievers yet, and that does take time. I do think that is a big part of his poor performance. |
Not afraid to catch it, because he's caught balls in that situation before. I just think that since the time was running out, less than 5 seconds, and the man's arm coming toward his head, etc. I understand your point, but we live to catch another pass, without the risk of getting seriously injured.
|
That ball was thrown behind Ricks and he barely managed to get a hand on it. If he caught it, it would have been the craziest circus catch of the week. I don't fault him for it and I doubt he worried about actually getting hit during the play. People say things after the fact to justify their actions. We shouldn't trash the guy because we have the rare opportunity to hear his post-game reaction that he shared with his family. Ethelyn will eventually tire of it and be reluctant to share.
|
Which play are we talking about? The last one of the game? If so then Ricks has to go for the ball. Who knows maybe he gets a shot to the head which draws a flag and we get one more chance to score a TD or kick a FG. players have to lay it on the line on every play because any particular play could be the one that saves the game.

Yes, and reason why was the WR's weren't running the correct routes, and they weren't catching the ball when it got their. Green made it happen on 4th and 10, because of that reason. |
Green did not have his best game by far. However saying that he did keep us in the game and gave us a chance to win. On the last drive that they scored the touchdown on is what I am talking about. Ok think of this situation had it happened last year. 1:52 to go in the game Grbac would have gotten us in the red zone then with a wide open Alexander in the end zone on 4th down and goal he throws a two yard pass to Tony G. Chiefs turn the ball over on downs. So my point is Green is better just give him a couple of games.

I'll have to take the good withw the bad - won't I
|
Don't let the arm-chair coaches bother you.
|
Can't get too excited when someone criticizes Mikhael. It'a all about being able to accept those criticisms.
|
I just wouldn't want you to take it personally. Keep in mind the majority of these folks who inexplicably think they know what it takes probably didn't even make the cut in high school.
|
Hey, I take exception to that! I played with Al Bundy on his football team...
;) |
At one point it really bothered me, as it would any parent, but I've learned to have a thick skin
|
Please don't think I'm pimping Green. But let's realistic, this is the FIRST time he has opened a season as a starter, and undeniably in a town that is DYING for QB that is a leader. He is the only reason we still had a chance. He did things that Elvis never could. He alluded a sack, and kept the drive alive. On the proir drive, he drove us down into field goal range. Two consecutive drives, in crunch time. I can't believe that these intangibles aren't an improvement.
Lack of a running game dictated this game. Considering us bottom feeders kept the predicted division champs close, I think says more about them than us. |
ChiefPriority,
"Yes, and reason why was the WR's weren't running the correct routes, and they weren't catching the ball when it got their."
I just stated what happened. 14 POOR passes happened. Now, recievers not running the correct routes might just be WHY that happened. Realistically, it's very possible a rookie and a vet in a new offense could be responsible. It is a lot to stuff in your brain to be totally prepared by week one. That's a good point. However, "and they weren't catching the ball when it got their" does not explain a poorly thrown pass. I addressed poor passes, not poor qb numbers. The recievers did a pretty poor job of bringing the ball in after the throw, you are correct. But that doesn't explain why uncatchable passes were thrown. Running the wrong routes could, but not failing to catch a ball that's impossible to catch. That was what I was addressing by the 14 passes. Either way, I see your point. Our wr's need to collectively get it together in a hurry...:( |
When you've abandoned your running game, every pass is not going to be perfect. First game, and already he's being ripped.
Who does he have continuous repititon with? Snoop, MR, and Gonzo. That's it. In camp , he was throwing to Thomas, mayes...Where are they now? We are not strong at wide reciever, we do NOT have breakaway speed, and until we do, we need to stick with the above mentioned in our game plan, along with giving DA and TG time to get their timing down. |
I ripped a poor performance...He performed poorly. That doesn't mean I don't support the guy, or like him, but he played like ****.
ChiefPriority brought up a good point. It happened with Grbac and it's happening with Green, YOU HAVE to have confidence in and familarity with your wr's...He hasn't gotten to that point yet. That's obvious. It takes time. It might take all season, who knows. I'm willing to be patient. I'm willing to give DV two years to make the playoffs. I'm not even asking for a winning record this year, just a team that can compete each week and keeps getting better. But I won't pretend our team played better than it did. Green played bad, and other than the pass blocking, our entire offense looked bad. Just like DV said himself, the defense is ahead of the offense. It showed. :( |
Why is it always the down side? Did you hohum through that pass to snoop? Or did you jump out of your chair? just curious.
|
Not to mention they have never used the non-vanilla offense in a game before! It seemed like when they got into a rythym and there were no stupid errors like bad snaps or dropped balls Green did really good. I am going to watch the tape again for sure. Hopefully this was what the team needed and our coaching staff can make adjustments! :)
|
Green will continue to look pretty damn average if our OL can't open up a running lane.
I'm not excusing Trent, but like Stevie said, it sure is nice to have a QB who can run the two minute offense. No running game, new system, #1 receiver is lame, #2 receiver in his first NFL game - you can see why our offense sputtered. My favorite part was when Dick grabbed the playbook, pulled Green aside, yelled at him and then tossed his headphones. Oh wait, that was Marty ...:D |

YEAH Stevie! ROCK ON!:D

"14 POOR passes happened. Now, recievers not running the correct routes might just be WHY that happened. "
Vermiel has said that it is Greens job to throw the ball where the receiver is SUPPOSED to be. If the receiver isn't there, then it is not Greens fault. In this offense (again according to DV) the QB has to throw the ball BEFORE the receiver is open. |
Word up Splatbass, and think about it.........he is throwing to live out there, and most of them were out of desperation trying to find the "most open man" our guys weren't gettin' too open, running poor/slow routes. If he hadn't had to try to force it, his completion rate would have been much better.
|
Don't....
- give the ball to Holmes - throw into double-coverage Do... - use Snoop and Gonzales... - use the shotgun more... - get faster blockers... |
Fly,
You're wrong, wrong, wrong. We NEED ever so desperately to get the ball to Holmes more. You need to watch more football or something, because it is not uncommon for a HB to get shut down for his first 10 carries and then break open for a couple big ones later. Look at Terrell Davis last night. His #s were very similar to Holmes' up untill the half, but Denver didn't give up, and he ended up with 101 yards. Brad and everyone, I don't want to sound like a blind "homer", but you are all being a little harsh on Trent. He started out pretty darn good. His first pass was dropped, the second should have been pass int, his third he caught on a batted ball, and it went on like that. I only saw one time when he didn't throw to a wide open guy, and that was Alexander on a third down in the first quarter. He found Gonzalez open a few times, and ended up leading us to a two possesion lead. His game got worse after the second bad snap. He made a few bad throws, but looking at the tape, I am sure you are confusing incatchable balls with balls that he was throwing away. There were also a few drops. I'm not saying he had a good game, but think about this... Last year in New England Elvis had a bad day, and he got really bad when he hit Gonzalez at the 5 yard line when we didn't have time to line up. He single handedly lost the game for us because he lacked the intangables to play effectively at crunch time. Trent on the other hand, also had a bad day. But when we needed it, he kept a cool head and drove the field. He broke two tackles and scrambled for a first on 4th and 10. On that play, Tony Richardson was doing jumping jacks yelling "throw me the ball" But Tony was standing 3 yards short of the first. Instead of doing the Elvis thing, he yelled at Tony to make a "would be" game saving block. Then, when the sidelines couldn't get their shit together and get a play called, Trent did the smart thing and called our last time out. The crowd booed, but not only was it the correct thing to do, we ironically ended up scoring with TOO MUCH time on the clock. Obviously the throw and catch to Minnis was a thing of beauty, and despite poor play, our offense did not lose this one. Our special teams and defence didn't play tough when they were needed. (Although, the Raiders caught a lucky break on the kick off return to midfield. Bracy Walker would have made the tackle at the 25, but was blocked in the back. The Raiders should have had first down at their own 15. Not first down at our 48.) |
I agree with mcan
Fly you are wrong, wrong, wrong. |
