Damn... my oldest boy would love this thread.
When I was a kid, skaters were kinda outsiders. Now it's the cool thing... I have to admit, a lot of the art is impressive. |
My boy spent $100 of saved up allowance on a "Zero" deck and promptly scraped it up all to hell. (Broke it in, he says)

I cannot find pics of most of what I had... I prolly went through about 30 decks in my skating career....
I remember this one because its the one I had just bought when I lost it in the Missouri river after a frontside flip off a 6 stair at the riverpark. brand new complete right in the river.... was a little pissed. http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2242/...65361f40_m.jpg |

My younger brother turned 44 this year. He was an early skate boarder with a $200+ rig back when that was real money. Dad built him a decent ramp that went up to the top of the garage doors. He used to do 180s off that.
We're talking '70s. In KCMO. |
i had a vision with clear grip tape on it. thats about when i grew out of skatin.
before that i had a santa cruz that i beat up pretty good. i still have both in the garage i think. this was back in '88-'91 i also used to wear those weird lookin airwalk shoes with the crazy patterns. after a few years of that my uncle bought me some nike airs and i never looked back |

Skaters, today, are...slackers, or worse, pot-head slackers.]
Least at our High School. Hope it's better elsewhere. :hmmm: |
Steve Caballero deck by P&P, independent trucks, OJ II's, and black fly paper
|
One of the guys in our group used to be a pro skater in the early 80's.
His office is littered with empty boxes of decks he buys on ebay. He's got some really nice ones. He still sneaks off at lunch several times a month and skates. "backwards" BErnie. here is shredding today, he's like 43. http://thehouseofsteam.wordpress.com...-cove-ca-2007/ |

Yea something like that. Hell I think we invented the "street luge". would get really bored and ride them boards down the steepest hill we could find. them damn things were really hard to stear at speed. |

Once you took up speed, invariably one of you would either lean out or lean in, resulting in a breakup of the system, resulting in both of you spinning like a roulette wheel across the pavement. |
The one I remember the most was my Free-Former.
http://www.gasolinealleyantiques.com...reeformer4.JPG They were pretty much a broken bone looking for a place to happen, narrow, unstable and the kicktails at both the front and rear gave a kid all kinds of bad ideas for stunts. |
My brother and I had Makaha "Cheddar Cheese" skateboards that our mom got us at the JC Penney outlet store.
It was an orange plastic board and neon green (fake snakes) wheels. I think it had tracker trucks though. My brother for his 13th birthday got a Val Surf "pool/park/pipe" Val-wide board with tracker trucks and Kryptonics wheels. That board was like the droooooooooool board. |
|
My favorite design....mine was white and black with a layer of "boneite".

Hosai Hammerhead.
No one had this deck. At the time,a buddy and I got the idea to start an underground skate shop for friends. The distributor that we did business with( for all of two orders ) had Hosoi as its' lead skater. http://www.bakerpools.net/collection/krookedhosoi.JPG |
The deck that ended my skateboarding career.
Greasy Winstead's work shoes and ollie kick-flips on free-style boards do not mix well. http://farm2.static.flickr.com/1174/...f2fe7d.jpg?v=0 |
I owned alot of other decks that I had saved, broken ones included, until college.
A rogue roommate stole the lot before disappearing...never to be heard from again. |

my favorite deck that I had, and also the last deck that I had was the original Mike Vallely Barnyard by World Industries. it's sitting next to me in my office now. come to find out, that deck, in mint condition, now sells for upwards of $3000 on ebay. |

This is the best pic I could find off the net.
Flip - Tom Penny board. My neighbor had a halfpipe in his backyard during the 80's/early 90's. We had a good time. http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2398/...163e57.jpg?v=0 |
I knew I was getting on in years when I started seeing decks with two kicktails.

When I was in 4th-5th grade, I had a friend who loved skateboarding. I loved part of it - the trucks. I never had the money, and my parents wouldn't spend the money on a board, but I would read his CCC magazines and put together a great board. But it was the trucks that interested me the most. Titan trucks, they were always my number one.
I've been on a skateboard probably less than 5 whole minutes in my life, btw. |
alright i was always to big and blessed with matchstick ankles. when my dad moved to spfld he bought a house across the street from the dude that started the skatepark that was off st. louis behind dillons, used to be a bar called The Hanger.
anyway this dude was some sort of born again x-junkie who was gonna save the kids with skate ramps and halfpipes. shittons of locals would come and skate every friggin day it was nice, junkiepreacher was the only game in town. this was my 1st introduction into lots of things hardcore being one of em and needless to say i never looked back. the boards i posted are ones i remember, and i remember this guy cause he murdered someone http://www.tonyhallamskateboarding.c...gatorbase2.jpg whatever, it was a good time. there was another board that came out around 87-89ish that didnt have rounded edges kinda had points where the rounded part should have been. odd but cool. any ideas? |
This was a classic as well:

A classic.

I always wanted a deck that was white with simply "Skateboard" written on it. Sort of like in Repo Man, with the generic labeling.

I started skating the in the late 80's and I went through about half of those decks in that picture including the Gator, the Tony Hawk and the Bucky Lasek in there. My personal favorite was this Mark Gonzales board. I went through six or seven of those before I couldn't find them anymore. I still have a Schmitt Stix Yard Stick that is in perfect condition with the original Indy trucks and Sims wheels.

Alva Deck, Independent Trucks with Kryptonic Wheels. I mowed so many lawns and washed so many cars that Summer to buy that board. It was so worth it, best skateboard I ever owned!

Wow, this thread brings back some memories...
I was a huge Caballero fan, and skated mostly his decks. I had a few others sprinkled in, but always came back to Stevie... I had a 4' half pipe in my backyard for a couple years. Eventually tore it down, and started building an 8' ramp. Was about ready to attach the actual skating surface, and the city showed up and shut me down. A neighbor complained, and I couldn't proceed without a building permit. :( An expensive lesson for a high schooler... |

I did a google search and found my exact 1979 Alva deck (re-issue of course). Very Cool, many good memories coming back. |
