Yanks sign Mark teixeira
8 yr/170 million
Source: Teixeira, Yanks agree to 8-year deal ESPN.com <!-- end promo plug --> <!-- end story header --><!-- begin left column --> <!-- begin page tools --> <!-- end page tools --><!-- begin story body --> <!-- template inline --> Updated: December 23, 2008, 3:28 PM Free agent first baseman Mark Teixeira has reached agreement with the New York Yankees on an eight-year contract worth more than $170 million, a source involved in the negotiations tells ESPN The Magazine's Buster Olney. The Yankees swooped in on Teixeira on Tuesday when it was believed the Boston Red Sox or the Washington Nationals were the likeliest of his future employer. The Red Sox's offer was believed to be in the range of $170 million, and the Nationals reached out with an offer perhaps greater than that of Boston. http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/news/story?id=3790141 |
Reported by Buster Olney, who earlier reported this morning that Tex was down to two teams - Red Sox and Nationals.

:shake:

**** the Yankees with a rusty railroad spike.... greedy mother****ers....
|
Good grief.
|
8 years, $170M, full no-trade clause.
Yeah, I'm sure they won't be regretting that deal in oh, three years. |
ROFL
The Red Sox also make out like bandits in the current system, but this really underscores what a joke it is. With the new stadium, it will only get worse. Yankees will have double the payroll of anyone else in baseball soon, if they don't already. |
No ****ing way i thought the Red Sox had him
|
Now will they sign Manny?
|
LMAO
Buster Olney just said the Yank-mes now have the TOP FOUR HIGHEST PAID PLAYERS IN BASEBALL. Wow, that is just hilarious. What a sport. |
Yankees havent won a World Series in 8 years. They can spend all the money they want. Its ZERO gaurantee of anything.

The Yankees are like the damn Mafia..... everyone knows they exist, and that what they do is wrong, but nobody does a damn thing about it till shit's ruined for everyone else...
|
Good God. Is their payroll at 300 mill for the year?
|
Tex is a much better signing for them than the Giambi contract, that's for sure.
|
FAIL.
|
Hey Yankmes, the Wall Street gravy train is over. Good luck sell $1000 seats.

I think the signing (and the system as a whole) is a joke, too, but Tex is a very special player. |

Here's hoping their pitching continues to disappoint. I'm not at all sold on Sabathia, much less Burnett. Sabathia might even be good for a couple years then completely collapse, the way he treats his body... |

they have spent over 400 million dollars on three players......

As an Angel fan, I bummed we didnt get him. However, I think its funny that everyone had him going to Boston, but then they get swooped on. Dont get me wrong, Boston will be just fine without Teixeira, but the rivalry cracks me up. Its entertianing for sure.
|
They don't need a superstar at every position. they need role players.
|
Yucking Fankees
|
Guess that luxury tax isn't hurting too bad.
|
what does he project to do 35 homeruns 100 rbi 400 obs above average defense? If they were spending that kind of jack you better get pujols. My guess this is all knee jerk from not making the playoffs

It doesn't impact their decision-making at all. |
What I want to know is who decided, 1000s of years ago that their last name was going to be Teixeira???

&*(#ing Joke
This sport is a joke. It will make it that much sweeter when the Royals sweep their ass next year. Write it down.

I wish there was a way to fix the broken economics of baseball. It would hose the Red Sox too, but honestly, the sport needs the fix. The current system is just silly. |
I really wish MLB would kick out the ****ing Yankmees and Red Sox, then they could play each other in every game, ESPN would explode with delight, and the rest of baseball would be interesting and competitive.
Better yet, I wish their ****ing planes would crash in mid-air, hopefully right over the new stadium. 4321 |
Just when i was thinking there might be a reason for me to watch mlb this season...Nope. I'll watch the inevitable Yankee choke in the post-season and everyone will blame a-rod, but the preceding six months of New Yorker insufferability will be far more trouble than it's worth.
|
Wonder if the Yankees are still in the Manny hunt. Last I heard they were thinking of 3 years at $25MM per.
|
The funny thing is that such over the top greed and excess like this is going to end up forcing MLB to add a salary cap and/or 100% revenue sharing.
It's just like the greed on Wall Street - the guys took it too far until it blew up, and now increased regulation will put an end to the exorbitant excess. |

I'd like to see Dayton Moore's initial reaction to this type of stuff. Laughter? Kick something?

Just wait for the uncapped year in the NFL.
It'll be just like this except it will be the Patriots, Giants and Cowboys doing this. |
"the royals could have had him if they just paid him"-dumbass yankee fans

Man, NY Yankees are going to be STACKED next year. Think if they get Man Ram too.
What is their rotation going to be? CC Sabathia AJ Burnett Chien Ming-Wang Joba Chamberlain and won't they still have Andy Pettite? |

I never thought Tex would go to the Red Sox, he had problems with that organization at the beginning of his career and now he is joining their rival it makes sense. The Yanks just did this to make sure he didn't go to the Sox. They have cleared Giambi, Abreu, Moose, Petitte, Pudge, and Pavano. They had a lot of extra cash to spend. At the end of the off-season they will have ended up spending just a little more for this year than they did last year. I just have no idea why they traded for Swisher if they were planning on making a run for Tex.

I wanted the Angels to get him. Or someone outside of New York/Boston. Just once I wish a free agent would show some imagination and not sign with the red sox, yankees or mets. Why has nobody signed with the Rays? Granted, their revenue streams aren't even close to the NY/Boston teams, but they won the toughest division in baseball, beat the Red Sox in the ALCS, and they don't make any noise in free agency? That fanbase doesn't NEED another reason to get excited, but they'd be more than happy if you gave them one. |
who was it that was saying that the NFL losing a salary cap wouldn't be bad because baseball was doing just fine without one?
Brock ... Rausch?? there was a couple of them |
Sometimes I think they should add a third team in NYC. I know it will never happen, but the luxury tax does nothing to curb the Yanks or Mets spending. Put a third team in there and at least take some market share, however little it would be.
The Yankees are sickening. They have the whole NYC, NJ (millions), Long Island (millions), the counties upstate, Rochester, Buffalo, Syracuse, Albany and even quite a bit of PA as media markets, not to mention nationwide bandwagon Yankee fans that watch on YES. I lived in Williamsport, PA for 3 years and saw more Yankee hats than Philly or Pirate hats. I hate the Yankees. I hate bandwagon Yankee fans even more. |
Hopefully he works out as well as Giambi did.
What a ****ing joke. |

so that makes the screwed up competitive balance of baseball a figment of everyones imagination?!?! small market teams have to work twice as hard and be twice as smart, compared to the big markets, to just not get run off the field. |
Well you got the money spend it, that's how I look at it.
|
I'm speechless. Wow I hope they epic-fail so hard this year.
|
Parcells, why do you call him Schicklegruber? Does it have something to do with Hitler's dad?
