HOFers Playing Now: Runningbacks
Edgerrin James - He’s 11th on the all time list right now. I think all the top 10 guys will eventually get in (Bettis and Curtis Martin were accumulators). Doesn’t have a ring. I think he’ll get in, but even the top guy isn’t a slam dunk.
LaDanian Tomlinson – IN. He is/was a star Fred Taylor - I’m not seeing it. For example, just 1 probowl. Could take another couple seasons for this accumulator to limp into the top 10. Warrick Dunn - No Jamal Lewis - No Shaun Alexander - No Clinton Portis – Probably not. He could finish top 10 in yardage and had some star runs. Being a dumb ass and not having a ring will work against him. He’s never recaptured the magic of the Donks years. Ahman Green - No Thomas Jones - No Ricky Williams - No Deuce McAllister - No Rudi Johnson - No Brian Westbrook – Probably not, definitely needs a ring to stand a chance. Larry Johnson - No Michael Pittman - No Steven Jackson – He’s only 25 so he still has time to really rack up the numbers. Willis McGahee - No Willie Parker - No Frank Gore - No Some other guys are in the top 250, but no one worth mentioning. I'm seeing maybe as few as 1 or 2. Probably not more than 4 under any circumstance. |
If Deuce never had that first season ending injury his whole career would have been different. He was a HOF back for sure up until then...
Fred Taylor deserves consideration but probably won't get in. He is good enough to be a HOFer (rare mix of size, speed, talent), but durability damaged the first half of his career. I think he has been seriously under-rated during his career.
I think Fred Taylor has a solid chance. He's been productive for a long time. Also Jamal Lewis and his 2,000 yd season with a Superbowl win could get him there.
Portis will always have his gay gold belt.
yeah, I'm not really seeing any other than tomlinson. the law of averages says there HAS to be more than one hall of fame guy in this generation though...
Tomlinson, Taylor are in. Taylor may take a few years, but imo he will get in. I think Portis will when its all said and done with. If he has a few more decent years, he may get it.
I think LT is the only "shoe-in"
The running game just isn't as important as it was, teams are spreading the carries around, the top RBs are stars for a year or two then become average. All these kill chances for RBs to become HOFers. Also follows the trend of RB being the easiest position to replace. Very few exciting runners at any given time.
AP of course hasn't cracked the top 250 yet, but he certainly deserves watching. He's a star and is piling up the stats.
I think that, if we have this conversation in the future, the only guys I could see being possibilities are adrian peterson (if he stays healthy), stephen jackson (if he continues to produce in the lou), ronnie brown (not likely, but weirder things have happened), and I could see deangelo williams maybe catching fire (if he doesn't have to share carries with jon stewart for the rest of his career). most of these aren't likely--it looks like the running back position has turned into one such that only one guy a generation will get the nod from the hall.
I don't see it for James.
LT almost for certain. I could see Westbrook with a couple more good seasons and a ring. Looking further down the road, I could certainly see that for Adrian Peterson.....insert usual caveats here. |
Priest? I know he's not playing just a question

So...
Tomlinson is in the top two of every category and has longevity. No ring, but it seems like he's a lock. Portis is in the top five or six of each category. No ring again. It's hard for me to imagine him making it because he doesn't seem to play as big as his stats. He does have stats, though. Edgerrin James gets a lot of yards and has longevity, though he doesn't score much. Again, no ring. He might move ahead of Portis. Dunno. LJ doesn't have the longevity yet, and it can be argued that he's one-dimensional as a no-block, no catch runner. Not unless he plays a long time and gets a ring. Jamal Lewis gets lots of yards and has the 2,000 yard season on his resume, but is handicapped by playing on bad teams and not getting TDs and wins. No. If Fred Taylor gets in, it'll be a pure longevity play. He's got nothing going for him but cumulative yards and maybe yards per game. It's amazing that Ricky Williams has amassed almost 10,000 yards from scrimmage even with his marijuana breaks. Sorry, but no. You can make an argument for Shaun Alexander if he's technically still active, but I don't think he had enough longevity. cdcox is right. I'm not sure that we'll have many HOF running backs in this generation. Tomlinson will go, and maybe in a stretch they'll take Alexander and Portis and James, but they're not exactly Barry Sanders and Emmitt Smith. We'll have to keep an eye on Peterson and Gore. I came into this expecting to make an argument for Westbrook, but looking at the stats, I'd say no. The Patriots also destroyed the concept of good running backs getting Super Bowls, so the leaders can't even make the "champion" arguments. Slim pickings. |
A runningback def needs the catch screen passes and go out for passes to stand a change. LT is the only slam dunk. If edge would have stayed with the colts with peyton getting the Saftey's out of the box, he would have made it. I like edge, he lost the explosion he had after he was marvcus'd, but he has always been a tough runner and I was glad he had a large day the other day. That just cemented how you don't need the big star to win it all. He leaves and the colts win it all.

Marshell Faulk although not active was a great one.
Robert smith was a good one, quit while he was ahead that is for sure.
I think lorenzo neal or T rich deserve to get in personally

I'm looking at the history, and he played eight years, but was only the key starter for four of those. He split carries with guys like Scottie Graham and Terry Allen (a fine back, admittedly) and Amp Lee, but once he finally got to be "the guy", he averaged 5.0 yards per carry. Denny Green must've had a really bad eye for running back talent. |
Barring injury... Adrian Peterson will be.
Just thinking about this, if there are a bunch of so-so guys in this generation, it's going to make Terrell Davis more attractive to the committee as the standards get lowered. It might be enough to have 2 out of 3 in terms of 1) impact during peak years, 2) rings, and 3) longevity/cumulative stats.
Why won't LJ get in? After five straight 1,500 yard seasons to end his career he'll be a lock. Especially with those four Super Bowls.
