Have you ever had to call 911? With Poll (sorry no Gaz option)
So taking the wife to work at 5:30 this morning, a few mins into the drive I glanced in the rear view and thought I saw something. A split second later I realized what it was, a car with no lights on going WAY too fast in my lane. Had I not swerved into the other lane we would have met in my back seat. About ¼ mile down the road the light turns red and the asshat has to lock his brakes to make the stop (As much as I wanted to jump out of the car and choke a bitch I didn’t). The light turned green and the douche just stayed there, now I’m thinking WTF is wrong with this guy then I see him driving in the classis W pattern, yup a drunk mofo. Ive seen people that looked “tipsy” but never as JA as this cat on the road.
I really didn’t know what to do but I didn’t want this JA to kill someone so I called 911. Just dialing it gave me a strange feeling, talking to the operator everything about it, even looking at my phone now seeing 911 is weird. This was the first time I’ve ever had to use 911 and hopefully the last It had me wondering how many of you have had to do it and what was the reason? |
No.
But I've called 411 before. Does that count? |
Lots. 20+ times probably.
When I was in college I worked for the intramural dept. and every time there was an injury that the participant wanted medical attention on we had to call 911. Was always overkill, you can specifically tell them you only need an ambulance but they still send police, fire, fire rescue, and an ambulance. Half the time the people didn't even get in the ambulance because someone watching would tell them if you go anywhere with them it costs a ton in bills. |
Never have.
|
I can never remember the number.
|
I've called it by mistake. Dialing a 913 number and double clutched on the 1... (I guess)
|
I did it a few times as a prank when I was a little kid, but I stopped once the cops actually came to my house one time.
|
Haven't yet had to call 911 for the family, but I've placed or directed numerous 911 calls to be placed from churches.
|
I call it, at least, twice a month. But that's because I work for the phone company and have to make test calls periodically. I'm now on a first name basis with the call center :)
|
I was driving to college one time and my friends and I were in my car on the other side of the road. Lightning struck a telephone pole, and it cam crashing down in the street and a car on the other side of the road smashed right into it and caught fire.
One of my friends got out and dragged dude out of the car, and me and my other friend drove back to a gas station to call 911. I don't think anyone even stopped to think about how we were reacting, we just all realized we needed to do something and started to do it. |
Called it once when my sister-in-law starting having a seizure. Freaked me the hell out.

Once in Kansas. My friend and I were driving home from the casino and came upon a girl passed out drunk at a red light!! Also in LA. while taking my mom to a Dr. appt. a man was driving very erratically at a very early hour in the morning. I found out later he was arrested for drunk driving.

Couple of times, never to snitch though.
|
My nephew called it when he was about 5 or 6. He was hanging out with three of his buddies at my brother's. They all said they did not do it. The cop made them line up and then asked the one who called to step forward. My brother was actually pretty proud of him...he stepped forward when the cop asked. He was shaking he was so scared. The cop made him sit in the car ( front ) and talked with him for a while. The cop handled it well. Trust me, that kid is not going to do that again!
|
I've called 911 a couple of times to report accidents; never for anything pertaining to myself.
|
Halloween when I was about 14 or 15, my sister and I were going to my aunts. We were driving on a dirt road and saw a car rolled in the ditch. A group of teenage guys had been out egging people cars as they drove passed and the car they had just egged slammed on the breaks so they panicked and turned too fast on the dirt road. One of the guys came running up in a blood covered white shirt and yelled to call 911, one of the other kids got thrown out and was trapped under the rolled car. When the paramedics arrived on the scene and they jacked the car up off of the guy, he passed away within minutes.
|
I saw an accident on the highway once. These assholes were racing on a busy highway. They were weaving back and forth through traffic, going about 75-80 on a 55mph road. Then one of the douchebags lost control, started to fishtail, and tried to steer back the other way. Then he smashed into this truck that was on his left. They pulled over, I called 911, and my friend and I just continued on with our drive.

When I was in highschool we went to Science City in St. Loius on a field trip. We were only there for about half the time we were supposed to when we heard lots of sirens and saw cops/fire/ambulance show up out of the blue. We were all ushered pretty quick after that into some big room there and didn't know at first what was going on.
Turned out that one of the idiot underclassmen that was on the trip had gone into a phone booth they had outside, called 911 and then immediately hung up right away and walked out. There was a camera that caught him doing it and when the narrowed it down to who had done it he claimed that he only hit redial....we were promptly put back on the buses and went right back home....that dumb shit. We had to go back to class for a couple hours once we got there instead of being out the whole day. |
Ahh, and another one I just remembered. When my son was still a baby,,not walking yet but able to pull up and walk himself around the edges of the bed, couch, etc, he was over by the nightstand where we have the phone and reached up and pushed the phone off onto the floor with one hand and it landed upside down. It was one of those phone with the great big buttons on top. I didn't even think about it and just scooped up the phone, put the handset back in its cradle and set it back on the nightstand and I no longer took my hand off of it and it rang. I answered it and it was 911 dispatch and they asked me if there was an emergency because they had just recieved a call from our number. Apparently the way the phone landed it got the numbers 911 in there enough to get the call to go through. They took my name and stuff and didn't sound very convinced, but we found it pretty funny afterwards.

Seen the car in a creek ditch, it was pouring.. camaro upside down in a creek.. I go get my cell phone dial 911.. While I was on the phone another car comes by and the two of the crawl out of the ditch and get in the car and speed off.. Got ahold of a lady cop, she was being a bitch.. I did not know the cross street so she said nothing they could do and hung up on me.. I went to the gladstone police station to let them know a car flipped upside down in a creek, they made me talk on some intercom outside in the rain.. Told me they would contact me later if I could give them my information... Told them no thanks since they were not going to do anything.. They said they would contact KC police dept. since it was not their jurisdiction.. |
Called several times.
#1 - The huge ice storm in KC back in ?2002? Ice weighed a limb down into a transformer - tree caught fire. Called 911 for fire department. #2 - New born baby. Choking on something. Called 911 because he wasn't breathing for a short period. #3 - Friend at my house - causing problems - wouldn't leave the house peacefully. #4 - One other - similar situation to the OP. Saw drunk driver, turned him in. |
I have them on speed dial. I always seem to be in the wrong place at the right time. :doh!:
Neighbor beating the crap out of someone. At least 4 different times. ( not same neighbor) Multiple car accidents. Cattle/horses on the road unruly guests at work twice for my mom once for my daughter once for me. |
No, Mr. MIAdragon, I've never called 911.
I did, however, once dial 666 and some really nasty guy with a strange accent answered the phone. FAX |

I have MANY MANY times-
Most Recently last may when we had an Water Home birth and my son was born not breathing . Luckily the Mid-Wife Carries Oxygen so she started it right away and I had to call 911. - it was the Scariest moment of my life. |
Only once when my late husband was having a heart attack.
|
I've called for situations I have observed on the highway. From cell phones it goes right to highway patrol. Just a few times when I've seen an old guy that looks broken down or one time I saw a couch in the middle of a major interstate. Only road stuff, though.
|
I have several times. Of the ones I remember....
1. Drunk dude staggering around in traffic late at night. 2. Thuggy kids threw a trash can into the middle of an intersection. 3. Scammer knocked on my front door and tried to scam me out of money. 4. Drunk driver on the road near me. 5. Car in front of us lost control and wrecked on the Interstate. But the first time was the freakiest, though it was before 911 was the emergency number. When I was about 15 years old, my mother had major surgery. She came home and everything was fine, and then one night there was yelling. My dad and sister and I converged on my parents' bedroom, and my mother's stitches had broken open, so she was looking like Carrie. Blood everywhere. My dad saw her and passed out, just went straight down and cracked his head on their dresser on the way. So my mother is bleeding profusely and my dad is unconscious, so my sister runs over to help and I get on the phone and dial 0 for the operator (no 911 in those days). I got the phone number for the hospital and called for help. Fortunately, neither injury was serious and they were both fine, but for a moment I thought I was going to be an orphan, and it took me several minutes to call dibs on their room over my sister. |
Twice.
First time was when I was in High School. Friend of mine were cruising around in the country and the weather was awful. It was probably 20 sleeting and the wind was about 30. Saw a dude in the middle of the road. Then he falls down. Turns out his wife left him, he got drunk and smashed into a bridge. His ribs were broken and a lung collapsed. He was damn lucky we happened upon him, because there probably wouldn't have been any traffic on that road for a few hours or maybe until morning. Used my mom's analog cell phone. The dumb****s at the 911 joint couldn't figure out where the hell I was and had sent the ambulance the wrong ****ing direction and had to call me back (despite them numbering the roads out there). ' Second time it was in the middle of summer and I was on the turnpike from Emporia to Wichita (so I couldn't turn around) and there was a really old man trying to change a tire. I don't know if it was an emergency, but I would have felt like an ass if that guy had a heat stroke or something. |
Had to call last Tue, or maybe, Wednesday @ work on lunch. This guy was passed out @ a light, and I reported it, main intention was to help him. I just hope he was alive.
|
Unfortunetly the day my father died in my arms.
|
I'm the 911 caller. A woman was beaten up next door. Then had to call the cops when some guy was attacked and was bleeding on our door.

Somehow I haven't. This thread makes me feel either sheltered or lucky or both.
|
I've been a 911 operator for the past 3 years. And I see so much shit happen....I just don't call it in.
It's actually annoying when people call in accidents. I understand people are wanting to help. But when you didn't see the accident and know nothing about the accident yet you still see people standing around the accident on cell phones....I think they'll know more about the accident than you do. Honestly I can rant all day about stuff like this. The general population of Columbia are guilty of being mouth breathers. |

In high school i was at a party and wouldnt let one of my ex's drive home because she was drunk and just got a DUI a few months earlier. The cops end up showing up and we had no idea why they came, we were in the basement and knew the neighbors didnt call. Well little did we know the drunk bitch called the cops and told them someone at the party was beating her. We end up having to let them in since they wouldnt leave because of what she said. All of us end up getting MIP's, just because i didnt let her go out and kill her self or anyone else. One of the many reasons i hate Olathe cops.
|
*55 to report a crazy semi trucker.
|
Long time ago we had a group of teens pull in front of our house and just start beating the shit out of another teen for no aparent reason at all. We lived off a highly traveled road back then.
|
I chose 2 in the poll, but I have since remembered 2 more.
1. 2 Guys street racing down a steep hill, their light is red and they run the light just as cross traffic light turns green, one of the cars hits an elderly couple, both were knocked out and bleeding, never found out if they survived. They pulled the kids out of the car (the one who ran the red light) and checked the trunk and there was a lot of alcohol, a huge bong, and what was either a shit load of weed/coke (it was wrapped up in a brown paper wrap). 2. I'm at work going to get a cup of coffee, coworker is convulsing on the kitchen floor. Turns out she is diabetic and had really low blood sugar and was trying to get some food when she passed out. 3. Car crash in front of my work. A semi pulled out of a parking lot and clipped a truck (Chevy S-10) and the truck smacked another truck. The guy in that truck was passed out and bleeding, and he weighed about 260. His engine was on fire, and I had no time to go back inside to get someone to help me so I pulled him out and dragged him about 30 feet away from his truck onto some grass. I think he survived, not sure. 4. Left work the other night, about a month ago. Busy intersection and the train was coming so the warning lights were on. A guy on a bicycle gets tired of waiting and decides to cross against traffic and gets slammed. I run out of my car and go up do him and he was just slobbering and making noises. It was a pretty spectacular crash. After about 5 minutes he came to and was coherent. |
Lived in a neighborhood filled with drug dealers and thugs. one night some drug dealer was beating the living crap out of his wife or GF. He had a gun. I had to call 911, they asked for my name and I said "do not even come close to my house, if he sees the police questioning me the thug could come after me). They complied but they needed my name.
A few minutes later, cops came, searched the entire complex, helicopters were scouring the place looking for his gun. Apparently he threw it and denied even having it. Glad I am out of that place. |

I forgot my most danger-defying 911 call. I made a thread when it happened a few years ago, but my wife and I caught a burglar who was attempting to break into houses. We saw him poking around and trailed him as he tried to break into several houses, calling 911 until the police arrived. As soon as they showed up, the guy went into the arrest posture, and it turned out that he'd just been released from prison.

The only time I ever called was when at the intersection of I-35 and SantaFe (135th st) in Olathe. I was headed East on SanteFe and stopped at the light before the bridge at around 4:00 AM.
There was another car coming from the other direction who was stopped at the light. To my surprise, the guy decided to take a right turn and get on the highway... Except that was an OFF RAMP! For a moment, he stopped his car and backed up. The light turned green, but I stayed there for a moment to see this moron straighten his car, put it back in drive and speed away down the off ramp, headed NORTH in the SOUTHBOUND lane. It was either a drunk or a suicide attempt. I called it into 911 right away. |
