Are insults against friends/family members off limits?
 

Recently, this has come up in DC, but we've always set rules forum-wide rather than forum at a time. The entire place is so filled with personal attacks that I'm not sure any efforts could ever make conversation in there civil. But the question is, from a moderation standpoint, are personal attacks against family members over the line?

Depending on the answer to this question, we may add another bannable offense to the list. Poll to follow.

IMO, yes.

Oh, and you can assume that there would be some level of discretion on this. "Your mom goes to college" and other joking things like that will never be bannable as far as I'm concerned.

No. Because this is a place where people sometimes come to vent and sometimes it takes a " your Momma " comment to get a point across. RedRum

Depending on the severity, yes it should. I think the mods here are good enough to know when a line has been crossed.

Maybe vailpass and frazod should be sent to a room to kiss and make up. Then this would go away for the time being.

I agree with that. We're really only talking about intentionally hurtful attacks against a family member, not casually joking.

Yes but the mod should determine the severity of the insult and the ban that goes with it.

If someone says "It looks like your wife could suck the chrome off a trailer hitch." That could be taken as both a compliment and an insult.

There should be a necessary specificity to make it bannable, IMHO.

That's it, though racial slurs have always been at least temp bannable and that's not in the list. Maybe it should be.

It's pretty hard to get banned on Chiefs Planet unless you are trying to. I don't think limiting these kind of insults is going to lead to some slippery slope and completely flip the way the Planet is moderated.

Thanks and that is what I said in DC. The list doesn't include any racial slurs like the n-word so by some over in DC, patteeu mainly, he thinks that is acceptable behavior.

Attacks like this should be a one warning thing with a temp ban. If they do it again then they can GTFO.

On another note, I don't really like it when "certain" posters constantly say, Kill yourself, Die in a Fire and the like. I think that should be bannable to a degree as well.

This is true, but there's definitely a line where people stop having worthwhile conversation and the thread is hijacked by a bunch of "you'd **** your uncle" bullshit. If people could figure out when to leave it alone, it would be fine, but some posters just want to beat a dead horse and bring up the same crap every time that someone they disagree with posts something.

Conversations become heated and things get said that shouldn't bother people because it's teh interwebs, but when it's a consistent and malicious pattern that detracts from intelligent conversation and not just an isolated incident, something should be done. Frankly, if it isn't something you'd be willing to tell someone in person, you probably shouldn't say it.

It's a sad reflection of what this board has degenerated into that this vote is even close.

I should mention that the results of this poll aren't binding - merely adding information to a discussion in the mod forum about an appropriate response to certain situations. Unless the results are overwhelmingly one direction or another, anyway.

Speaking of banning is it possible to write a script that bans 1/3 of the registered users on any given day? That would cut down on the number of people offending other peoples friends/families....

You know, this place has turned into a circus at times over the past few years while insults have been made about each others family members and at the same time the membership has doubled. At almost any one time there are now over 200 members viewing the lounge.

Of course half of them are probably members of Homeland Security.

That might be a difficult caveat to impose depending on where the line is drawn, IMO. What Vailpass did was really no different than that except that it was a bit more colorful.

We've got a rule against rude comments in prayer threads and I could support an extension of this concept to cover any situation where a poster's real life challenges (whether they be the poster, his/her family, or his/her friends) are being rudely treated whether in an official prayer thread or not, but the Vailpass comment that sparked this thread didn't involve anything like that at all. People around here ought to be able to withstand redrum-style treatment of hypothetical loved ones.

It means that this place is going straight to hell, and that is a direct result of the mods' lax attitude.

This shouldn't even be a question put to a vote - it should just be implemented. Good thing the police don't operate like our moderators; stealing would only be a crime if the thieves got voted down. :shake:

I haven't encountered anything like this in the almost 4 years I've been a part of this community, but this type of shit is definitely an exception to the rule. I'd say wishing death to members children would be a bannable offense. I honestly can't think of much else though. Really, that's what the ignore function is for IMO.
