Pretty hard to shorten LeAnn. Although, I had a few friends call me Vern in high school after they learned my middle name. That never stuck, though.

Rain Man 02-21-2009 11:26 PM

I go by my full formal name and it's what my parents always called me. My name doesn't really have a shortened version, so it's either go by the name or switch to the middle name or a nickname.

My middle name is cool, but doesn't match my persona at all, and no one will call me my preferred nickname of Coyote.

ArrowheadHawk 02-21-2009 11:26 PM

I go by a shortened version.

Shortened version of my first name. My parents chose that version.

Frankly, I'd rather not share it here.

Is your first name Elizabeth and you go by Eli?

Okay, maybe not, but it's possible.

KcMizzou 02-21-2009 11:31 PM

My full formal first name, but I'm called "Bran", or just "B", alot.

luv 02-21-2009 11:37 PM

Every once in awhile, my mom would call me by my first AND middle name. Although, she used to do that more with my brother.

My dad has two middle names, and my middle name is my dad's first name, so when my mom got mad she would throw all that together... I'm surprised she always remembered what she was mad about by the time she finished yelling my name.

How do those with 'the' as a middle name fit into the poll? (i.e. "Jimmy the Hand" or "Tony the Shiv")

Crush 02-22-2009 12:38 AM

I actually expect people to call me by my shortened first name. Nick rolls off the tongue a lot better than Nicholas.

I know a good guy with that name. I prefer Nicholas to Nick, and he's open to either.

aturnis 02-22-2009 12:48 AM

I have a couple of buddies, first names Kenny and Billy. They went by these names until they hit about 23. At this point in time, apparently, their wives/fiances decided to shorten their names to "Ken" and "Bill". I'm guessing they thought it was time for these guys to think about getting ahead in life and to be taken seriously.

One night, out drinking, I said my buddies name "Kenny" in order to get his attention. His Wife/Fiance looked at me and said "It's Ken..." fairly rudely. I just said..."You can make everyone else call him whatever you want, that's cool...but we grew up together...so it's Kenny to me". Luckily she just said, "ok" and shut up as she can be pretty ruthless at times.

I just thought this was a really weird thing to do. Has anyone here just up and changed their name on their friends b/c "it's time to grow up"?

banyon 02-22-2009 12:56 AM

The males in my fathers family have gone by our middle name since my great-great grandfather. My mom goes by her middle name too, as did my paternal grandmother. Weird, huh?

Didn't work that way in Cleveland.

My cousins were Johnny, Frankie, Timmy, Eddie, Tony, Ernie, Jimmy (There were another dozen or so names like that. I had 30-some first cousins on my father's side.)...

All of their friends would have called them by their last name.

kc rush 02-22-2009 07:02 AM

I used to go by my full formal first name, but now I only respond to "kc rush", or "Mr. kc rush" if FAX is addressing me. If anyone calls me by my birth name I ignore them or give them the finger. Even my wife and kids must address me in this manner.

The negative to this is that my 6 year old has now demanded that we call him "Captain Transformers Rock" and we are getting reports from school that he is flipping people off who don't call him by his chosen name.

I suppose my wife will want to be known as Queen Hawaii Vacation and my 2 year old will want to be called Backhoe Loader Snoopy.

Anyway, just know that you don't cross the kc rush, Queen Hawaii Vacation, Captain Transformers Rock, Backhoe Loader Snoopy family.

Katipan 02-22-2009 07:23 AM

You can't shorten my name (Karen)... I had some friends try "Kare-bear" in high school, but after I killed them, they stopped. Sometimes my ex-husbands friends would call me Chyna. But that was usually because I beat them at something. Most of the time it was "Coconut Chucker."

My middle name is a construct of a Flip woman that couldn't speak English and the holiday around my birthday.

I never changed my name when I got married, and since I have no... loyalty... to my current surname, I'm going to legally change my name. Making my middle name my surname.

Then Google will never be able to find me! And I'll have a porn star name.

Fire Me Boy! 02-22-2009 08:09 AM

In personal relationships, I use a shortened version of my full name. In bylines and professionally, I use my full first and last.

JuicesFlowing 02-22-2009 08:40 AM

My name isn't a name, but rather a subtraction symbol. -

Jilly 02-22-2009 08:50 AM

I had a cousin growing up that everyone called "Ricky". Once we got into junior HS most everyone started calling him "Rick", which I believe is a good thing. "Ricky" is not a good name for a man. His wife calls him Richard, but doesn't make a big deal about it. He may even go by Richard at work. I'll always call him Rick.

My mom never liked any names for boys that you could tack a "Y" onto: John, Bill, etc. She thought it was too easy to do when the kid was little and too hard to break when they got older, so all 4 of us brothers have names that are not susceptible to that.

tmax63 02-22-2009 09:00 AM

no initial choices?? Most of the time I go by Terry but I'm also Uncle T or Tmax. Usually it's hey T etc, etc

I like to be called shithead. That's pronounced Shi - thead.

Hog's Gone Fishin 02-22-2009 09:11 AM

My parents should have just named me "A-HOLE" It seems to be what most people call me.

BucEyedPea 02-22-2009 09:14 AM

Shortened version of my first name which is too long, not to mention dumb. My mother had a fascination with the girlfriend's of super hero comic strip characters. But it's been given to me by certain friends, not family. And it's sometimes repeated with a hyphen in between by a few other friends.

I go by Jeff my full name is Jeffrey. I deal with customers quite often, mostly their engineers and they will reply using my full name. I find that strange as I always sign my e-mails Jeff. My e-mail appears with my full name so I would guess that is where it comes from. Once we get to know each other they refer to me as Jeff. I have always thought it is rather pompous to go by your full name. Most of those that I have met that do strike me as swollen with self importance.

luv 02-22-2009 12:00 PM

Friend of mine has this habit of calling her guy friends by their full name. Jake is Jacob, Josh is Joshua, etc. Yet, she calls me Leo.

I used to have a friend named Cindy Lou. We used to call her Cynthia Louise just to make her mad. Her mom always said that, if she wanted people calling her Cynthia, she would have named her Cynthia and not Cindy.

I do that with a couple of friends... had a gf named Cassandra and I never got used to calling her Cass or Cassie like her other friends; and I have a good friend who has actually complained that she doesn't like me calling her Alexandra, since everyone else calls her Alex... but both full names are, well, better. ;)

Depends. Cass and Cassie are "cute" names. Cassandra is a beautiful name. Depends on her personality.

Exactly... and her personality doesn't really fit Alexandra, but yeah, Alex is for guys. I had a friend named Alexis in high school and couldn't ever call her Alex, either.

For some reason the name Cassie has a bad connotation... she definitely fit the name Cassandra better, imo.

i've got a fairly common first name. it's one of those names that people apparently like to add an "ie", or "y" on the end.(billEE, samMee, georgeEE, etcEE)
as a kid, i hated it and thought it sounded sissy.
somewhere around the age of 25, most people that added the "EE" to the end of my name, were either family, or friend. i kinda started to like it.
if you hear someone calling your name, it usually means you're not dead.
