2009 Oscars

Starting this on the main board since it's a once-a-year dealio...

Just returned home from the annual AMC marathon, and here's my thoughts, in no particular order:

As was the case last year, the best picture I was was the last picture I saw. In '08 that was No Country for Old Men. This year it was Frost/Nixen.

I thought this was a particularly weak year, none of these films struck me as 'great', and I think most if not all of the movies up for the award last year were better. My order would be: 1. Frost/Nixon, 2. The Reader, 3. The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, 4. Milk, 5. Slumdog Millionaire. None of the films were bad, by any stretch, but I don't see myself going out of my way to see any of them again. I thought The Dark Knight was as good as any of them. I haven't seen The Wrestler, but my guess it I'll believe it was snubbed.

Best actor from the films I saw was Frank Langella as Nixon. Penn was good as Milk, but Langella was on another plateau. Brad Pitt was also very good.

I have no idea why Josh Brolin got a best supporting nod. James Franco was the supporting meat of that movie. No pun intended.

Kate Winslet was the only Best Actress nominee I saw, and she was extremely good. That film surprised me: I'd heard people complain about its best picture nomination, but I thought it was very good.

That's all I got for now.

oaklandhater 02-22-2009 06:21 AM

How the hell can you put The Reader above curious case of benjamin button and slum dog millionaire.

revolutionary road was even better then that stale piece of shit.

Fire Me Boy! 02-22-2009 07:25 AM

I miss AMCs... I loved doing that nominations day.

Demonpenz 02-22-2009 09:48 AM

the dark knight should win everything, the rest are for gays and woman

Some are upset that the film appears to making a case that the day-to-day 'heavy lifting' of the Holocaust was foisted by a few on a workforce of desperate poor illiterates who weren't aware of or couldn't process of the gravity of their tasks, giving short shrift to the vast contingent of committed and fully cognizant anti-semites who were doing this work on behalf of the German govt.

Thig Lyfe 02-22-2009 02:14 PM

In my opinion:

1. Slumdog
2. Ben Button
3. Frost/Nixon

I never got to see Milk or The Reader, but I can't imagine The Reader being more worthy than The Dark Knight, Wall-E AND The Wrestler. I saw The Wrestler the other night and I have no idea how it didn't get more nominations.

the Talking Can 02-22-2009 02:17 PM

i'm going to a movie before the oscars, can't decide which

this my ranking at the moment:

1. Milk
2. Wrestler
3. Slumdog Millionaire

I've been eager to see Penn ever since the first promo and it has a great cast, but the Wrestler is calling me too...

I really wanted to see Milk but there aren't many theaters that are playing it. I'd highly recommend seeing The Wrestler if you're in the mood for gritty violence and Slumdog Millionaire if you want something more uplifting (although Slumdog has its share of violence, too). I loved both.

This would be a great omen for Kate Winslet. God, I would love to punish her.

Pioli Zombie 02-22-2009 07:57 PM

I think only deniro and pacino should win the oscar. Even if they didn't have a movie out that year.

I especially love it when winners feel it neccessary to push their political opinions on the rest of the world.

Pioli Zombie 02-22-2009 08:06 PM

I hate when these awards always give the award to the person who either just died or their family was killed or they had their face blown off or something.

In my day if your house burned down you got nothing and we liked it!!!

Benjamin Button I could swap with The Reader and have no issues. I didn't like Slumdog Millionaire at all.

No it's not suprising.

How ironic is it that I start the oscar thread, and am not watching it. I'm interested in the results, but not the presentation.
