Broncos sign JJ Arrington

Didn't see this posted.

Apparently the Broncos are trying to corner the RB market. What do they have like 52 running backs on the roster.

Arrington the Broncos' third free-agent TB

The Broncos continued their unprecedented free-agent buying spree Wednesday by signing not one, but two more veteran running backs.

A few hours after the Broncos signed Lamont Jordan to a two-year, $2.5 million contract, the team finally agreed to the terms of a four-year, $10 million contract with J.J. Arrington.

With former Philadelphia Eagle Correll Buckhalter signed Friday, the Broncos have added three free-agent running backs.

It was the same arrangement reached last Friday, but the deal was hung up for a few days as the two sides haggled over guaranteed money.

Jordan, 30, received a $500,000 signing bonus. Jordan played last season for the New England Patriots and offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels, who is now the Broncos head coach.

By signing three tailbacks, McDaniels is bringing another piece of the New England offensive formula to Denver. The Pats often played three tailbacks, and rarely use a 25-carry workhorse during a game. Buckhalter likely remain as the Broncos' starting tailback with the more powerful Jordan getting a few series and short-yardage carries. Arrington will compete for the third-down, pass-receiving role.

The signings all but assure current Bronco free-agent tailbacks Michael Pittman and Tatum Bell won't return. It also means the Broncos' holdover tailback stable of Selvin Young, Ryan Torain and Peyton Hillis will have to compete for a roster spot during training camp.

Arrington and Jordan boost the Broncos' free-agent take to 11 players since Friday. And more are coming. The Broncos are visiting today with veteran quarterback Chris Simms, who would become the backup to Jay Cutler. The team also has a three-year, $4.5 million offer sheet signed with restricted free agent David Anderson of the Houston Texans. Houston has until Friday to either match the Broncos' offer or work out a trade.

At this rate, Cutler may be the only Broncos player who returns for 2009.

No team has been more active in free agency than the Broncos, although the total contractual commitments to the 11 players, including Anderson, is $100.12 million, or about what the Washington Redskins gave $100 million man Albert Haynesworth.

Why are they morons?

The training camp roster consists of 80 players. Every team brings in depth to compete for spots.

wild1 03-04-2009 06:20 PM

this guy is so good he couldn't take the starting job in arizona from a guy who the texans cut in training camp this year

ohiobronco2 03-04-2009 06:54 PM

You can judge us now, but our RB's at every postion is going to revolutionize football. You just wait and see.

Yeah because I'm sure when you bring in EVERY free agent RB that you're bound to strike gold!

chiefs1111 03-04-2009 06:59 PM

they also just signed Chris Simms according to NFL Network

SBK 03-04-2009 06:59 PM

I didn't realize that Al Davis was working for the Broncos now? Their off-season this year looks much like the Raiders last year.

That's not the point. Denver knows Arrington is not an All-Pro. He's just an added body. A role player.

mlyonsd 03-04-2009 07:02 PM

I'm guessing 6 months from now all donkey fans will be missing the rat.

Not even close. Do the math. Compare the guaranteed money handed out per player and the aggregate total of signing bonus $ and the Raiders have the Broncos beat by tens of millions.

Seems more than half of them were the day he was fired.

All kidding aside, It's got to be a bizarre time to be a Bronco fan right now.

What a series of events...

George Carlin said it best "Children are like every other person, a few winners and a whole bunch of losers." I would think your RB's fall under the same category.

Arrington is hardly camp fodder, let alone a worthless player.

He ranked 11th in the NFL in kick return average and averaged 6.0 yards a rushing attempt last year.

BTW, 2.5 million is peanuts in the NFL for a veteran. The salary cap this season is approximately $123 million!!!

I'd take Haynesworth over all of the Broncos' free agents combined.

So they still have room for 58 more RB's

OMG..LMAO...WOW

It's like the donks are rebuilding or something....sheeesh.LMAO

I mean they have the next coming of Elway...what's up with the defensive posture?

Stinger 03-04-2009 09:53 PM

With all the RB I am sure the Broncos are bring back the Wish-bone offense.

redngold85 03-04-2009 11:47 PM

their play selection next year will be 90% run 10% pass

Miles 03-05-2009 02:48 AM

I actually think these RB signings have been somewhat solid overall even though much of their offseason thus far has been fairly humorous outside of Dawkins.

Obviously a bust for the Cardinals but Arrington has some receiving skills and looked good at times last year. Buckhalter wasn't a bad pickup either even though he is getting up there in age. The Lamont signing was likely a waste since he is old and has been shit for a few years.

Lamont was signed probably cause he was in New England last year.

I expect it to be Buckhalter and Jordan that compete for the starting job with Arrington as the 3rd down back.

Mile High Mania 03-05-2009 06:29 AM

It is wild, but teams need to be 3 deep at least with options if you don't have that premier RB... and Denver went through, what... 27 RBs last season?

Who knows if they'll all make it through camps, etc... I like most of the signings so far, nothing crazy on the cap for any one player and there is a lot of competition now in spots. We'll see.
