AT&T U Verse

We finally got sick of Comcast and signed up for the switchover to this today. Anyone else have it? Any reviews/comments?

mikeyis4dcats. 03-08-2009 06:04 PM

seriously, this is at least the 3rd Uverse thread in the past month...

Sully 03-08-2009 06:10 PM

SOrry.
I didn't even bother to search.

Sully 03-08-2009 06:14 PM

Just found one.
Apologies, again.

You may wish you hadn't asked. The general reviews of Uverse are not very good here on CP

Its ok. Ive had it for about a year and a half.

The only problem i have is the HD isnt as good as Time/warner and Direct TV.

Other than that, its fine.

I don't think that is true. Some don't like it but many do. I think it is great. The only provider that is better IMO is DTV, however that is not an option for me.

In my area, timewarners HD sucks balls. I have Directv. I think their HD rocks.

jjjayb 03-10-2009 07:04 AM

The HD sucked with Uverse when I had it last year. I kept it for 2 weeks and canceled. Anytime there was the slightest motion on the screen the picture would lose definition. They use way too much compression. It's the youtube of high def providers.

Sully 03-10-2009 07:12 AM

Hmm.
Well, the good news is that there's no contract, so if it sucks that bad, I can quickly move on.

Sure-Oz 03-10-2009 08:42 AM

Basically it sucks for HD, otherwise im sure its not bad

I have never noticed that. Hmm.

Have you seen HD from another source?

BigMeatballDave 03-10-2009 12:08 PM

I thought Timewarners HD was good until i saw Directv. Cable sucks.

In my area TWs HD has always sucked. I switched to DTV last summer. I'm extremely pleased. Their HD is great.

Yeah, my parents have Comcast and I used to have TWC/RR and Sunflower Broadband. Never experienced Direct TV because I like to have high speed internet.

Do you live in a dorm at KU? If so, are you allowed to have Directv?

Blindside58 03-10-2009 01:14 PM

I just got it and I am not impressed the the Picture in SD or HD at all, both get pixelized. .. I am a former DTV subscriber that got spoiled! I will probably be changing back promptly because there is no contract. I wish they had the Data Plan and Phone plan without the cable.

I only lived in the dorm my freshman year and that was a long ass time ago, but no, you were not allowed anything except what they provided - which was the shittiest cable imaginable.

Cool, does it end up costing you any more than what you would have gotten with a packaged deal? If not, I might have to look into that.

My Att bill is $60/month. Thats Local phone with DSL(6MB). DTV is $90/month. HD-DVR service and no premiums. 3 rooms.

Sully 03-29-2009 04:32 PM

So we had this installed Friday.
So far, no real big issues. The HD isn't as good of quality as Comcast, but for the nearly $200/ month we are saving, I'm not going to complain much. There are definitely some things about it I like more than Comcast, including the menus, and something as simple as the speed changing channels.

So, we'll see.

Sully 04-07-2009 09:09 AM

My review, thus far...

Okay, it's been a couple of weeks, and here's where I'm at with this;
I like it. I would recommend it to anyone using Comcast.

Here are the plusses;
- 4 recordings on DVR at once. Only 2 can be HD, but that's not all that bad.
- About $150/month cheaper than what we were paying Comcast, and we have more channels and more HD channels.
- Viewing DVR in different rooms is nice. I don't sleep well at night, so recording some crap movie during the day, and knowing I can watch it late at night in the bedroom is very cool.
- I haven't worked with the "U-Bar" much, but in theory, it's a very cool idea.
- The non-HD looks MUCH better than it did through Comcast, and I don't know why. With our Comcast, it took another 5-7 seconds to switch from HD to non-HD, and back, which was a pain. On this, it switches directly, and the non-HD isn't nearly as rough as it was through Comcast.
- Speaking of channel switching...I love how it doesn't have the delay Comcast did, even between HD channels or non-HD channels. When I click "last" it immediately changes...no gap or delay at all.
- The local channels are the same number as they actually are. For instance, KCTV is actually "0005" or "1005" for HD. That's nice.

Minuses;
- For some reason my logitech Harmony doesn't work as well with the box. It works, but it's not nearly as efficient or reactive as the AT&T remote is. That sucks.
- If I'm in the bedroom, and I want to watch an HD feed, but happen to have 2 HDs recording downstairs, I can't change that from there. I have to go downstairs to make the changes.
- It seems to have trouble in bad weather, much like I experienced with satellites. It's weird, because nothing is outdoors, but we get a lot more freezing and pixelation during storms.
- The HD isn't quite as sharp as Comcast was. It's very close, and I found that the tech had set something up wrong at first, to make it look not as crisp...but there is a tiniest bit of downgrade, there.
- It amy be that I'm just used to Comcast after years of use. But I'm still getting used to the menu system. In some ways, it's MUCh better, but other ways, I seem to get lost. I assume that'll get easier as I get more used to it.

So, again, I recommend this to anyone on Comcast. I've never had satellite, so I can't compare...but side-by-side with Comcast, it blows it out of the water.

What pisses me off about Time Warner is their HD-DVR boxes are complete shit. I went thru 3 in a yr.

Dish Network's DVR is light years ahead of anything I've used before.

That was irritating, but nowhere near as bad as them prompting their own commercials to their own ****ing customers telling them to get TWC today! "reeruned one who sucks the peniss, how do you think I am watching this shit?!?"

The best part about Uverse since I have made the switch is I don't recall any commercials with ATT going out of their way to tell me why everybody but them sucks.

Awesome. Glad to hear u like it. Ive had it for about a year and a half and i love it.

I did have a problem about 8-10 months ago with the picture freezing alot and they had to come out and run new coax, but other than that. its been great.

Ive read a few things on some other forums where people have said that twisted pair Cat5 cable is more reliable than coax, but i personally have had no issues with it.

Yes. The Dish DVR is high quality. Reminds me of Tivo, in that regard. I'm not thrilled about my Directv HD-DVR. Its a big step up from TW, but that doesn't say much. I really miss Tivo. I hear they are coming back this fall.
