Chiefs to wear throwback uniforms

Awesome!

http://www.kansascity.com/sports/chi...y/1102859.html

The Cowboys and Texans shared the Dallas market in competing football leagues in the early 1960s but never settled the matter of supremacy on the field.

They will get a chance this season. The Texans, who in 1963 moved to Kansas City and became the Chiefs, will play the Cowboys at Arrowhead Stadium. The NFL on Monday granted the teams permission to wear their original uniforms and helmets from their inaugural seasons of 1960.

“Personally, that’s something I’m excited about,” Chiefs chairman Clark Hunt said. “Even though the Cowboys weren’t part of the AFL, their history is linked with that of the AFL and the Chiefs.”

The Chiefs will wear the same throwback uniforms and helmets for two other games this season. Both will come against a rival from the AFC West. One will be at Arrowhead, the other on the road.

The game against the Cowboys might mean the most to Hunt. His late father, Lamar Hunt, founded the Texans and the AFL in 1960. The NFL launched the Cowboys that same season to battle him for the Dallas market.

The Cowboys chased the Texans out of town after three seasons. Because they played in separate leagues, the teams never played one another.

“I have no doubt my father challenged (Cowboys owner) Clint Murchison probably many times during those three years,” Hunt said. “I’m sure the NFL told Clint he couldn’t play a team from that upstart league. So we’ll finally have a chance to do that.

“This will be a fun way to remember what happened 50 years ago.”

The Chiefs and Cowboys have played eight times in the regular season since the AFL and NFL merged in 1970. Dallas won five times.

That's cool.

Bob Dole 03-24-2009 11:03 AM

Sweet!

Stewie 03-24-2009 11:10 AM

That's a better looking helmet than 1/2 the crap in the NFL today.

Delano 03-24-2009 11:12 AM

Here's Mitchell and Ness' throwback.

stevieray 03-24-2009 11:13 AM

I hope they have apparel for the fans...It would be cool to have a throwback from that era.

ToxSocks 03-24-2009 11:20 AM

I was wondering when the chiefs would get in on this throwback jersey thing. It's kinda weird having the State of Texas on your helmet while playing in MO though.

CoMoChief 03-24-2009 11:22 AM

That would be fuggin sweet to get a throwback from that era.

CHENZ A! 03-24-2009 11:56 AM

what do the jerseys/pants look like? pretty much the same as now minus a couple stripes?

So we'll probably go white jersey/white pants since that was Lamar's favorite look.

Dr. Johnny Fever 03-24-2009 12:02 PM

Yuck. I hate throwback unis. Especially the Steelers... that's some ugly shit.

That pisses me off. Montana never played a game for us wearing that uniform. Where are the stripes on the sleeves? And those greedy Mitchell & Ness ****ers probably want $300 for that jersey, too. I'll take the Korean knockoff for $40, thank you very much.

The more I think about it, I agree. I have no problem with throwback stuff, but this is like throwing back to a time before we used toilet paper to wipe our asses. **** Texas.

The Chiefs wouldn't be "our" team right now if they hadn't worn that Texas helmet back in the day. It's where they came from. Respecting that doesn't mean you're taking a shit on the Arrowhead symbol.

Jethopper 03-24-2009 01:13 PM

The Kansas City Texans! You cotton-headed ninny muggins.

Mr. Krab 03-24-2009 01:15 PM

So we are going to have a game at Arrowhead with the teams both wearing Texan uniforms?

:shake:

Jethopper 03-24-2009 01:16 PM

Claythan..... Epic Fail.

DaFace 03-24-2009 01:17 PM

Cool - that'll be neat.

Agent V 03-24-2009 01:19 PM

I really don't see the problem. The team was founded in Texas. Just a part of the 50th anniversary deal. And it's only a couple of games.

So, given that this is a 50-year anniversary, please provide the year of the jersey that you think would be appropriate, since 1960 doesn't work for you.

They are one and the same. The Texans became the Chiefs. The Chiefs have no "throwback" history other than previously being the Texans. A Chiefs throwback IS a Texans throwback. Sorry if that upsets you.

Papi 03-24-2009 01:32 PM

I think everyone understands the logic, but that doesn't mean they have to like it. Has any other team rocked a throwback of a different state?

Rams throwbacks are technically throwbacks to L.A. Colts throwbacks are technically from Baltimore. You just don't think about it because they didn't used to be the L.A. Californians or Baltimore Marylanders.

beavis 03-24-2009 01:35 PM

This is the dumbest idea in the history of dumb ideas.

talastan 03-24-2009 01:35 PM

I don't see the problem with all of this? We were once located in Texas. If they do the throwbacks right, the Jets will have to be the Titans for their two games. Is just the simple sticker on the side of a helmet?

Pay homage to the history of your franchise. The Kansas city Texans is unstable, but so was the Tennessee oilers. It's only for a few games, and don't mess with Texas!

I always wondered what the Chiefs throwback jersey's would look like, it's a trend in the NFL several teams are wearing them including the Titans and the Buccaneers.

Chiefaholic 03-24-2009 01:47 PM

I like it and hope to attend one of the throwback games.

mikey23545 03-24-2009 01:49 PM

This should be absolutely cool. Great way to celebrate the history of the Chiefs and the AFL. I wonder if any of the other original AFL teams will be following suit? (pun intended)

Plus as an added bonus, it's drawn all the BB ****tards out into the open to bitch about it...Should make it easy to round them up and tag them for future studies.

Lol @ Ours and the Raiders jersy looking exactly the same as they did 50 years ago.

I dont understand why people are bitching about this. Its like if you were of Irish Heritage and you got upset if someone called you Irish American. Its the same thing. The Chiefs are from Dallas originally so we have to celebrate that, we shouldnt be mad at being called Texans, it is what it is.

From the Chiefs:
Chiefs to Unveil "Throwback" AFL Uniforms in 2009

Mar 24, 2009, 2:38:00 PM

The National Football League has officially granted permission to the Kansas City Chiefs to wear replicas of their original uniforms and helmets from the club’s ‘62 AFL Championship season during three select games this season. The Chiefs, originally founded as the Dallas Texans, will wear their “throwbacks” along with the seven original American Football League members as the franchises join to celebrate the 50th Anniversary of Chiefs Founder Lamar Hunt’s creation of the AFL.

The Chiefs “throwback” look will feature helmets with gray facemasks and a Texas-shaped decal with a gold star showing the location of the city of Dallas. Jerseys for the club’s “throwback” games will include a pair of patches that honor both the Chiefs 50th anniversary and the AFL’s 50th anniversary. Kansas City will don these replica uniforms when they host the Dallas Cowboys at Arrowhead Stadium and against two AFC West opponents yet to be determined (one home date and one away date).

In addition, the NFL will honor the AFL’s 50th birthday on its 2009 Kickoff Weekend with a Monday Night Football (9/14) doubleheader featuring club’s from the AFL’s first season. The first game will send Buffalo to visit New England and the MNF nightcap will be an AFC West battle with Oakland hosting San Diego. The Chiefs are also scheduled to unveil a 50th anniversary logo and host a series of events throughout the year to commemorate the franchise’s 50th anniversary.
