Anyone have a SNES

they are looking to get rid of?

My son has a burr up his butt to play Super Mario World on a console. Doesn't like emulation.:#

Wanted to see if I could find any reasonable prices out there. Still not really sure I want to get outdated tech though.

Hammock Parties 03-28-2009 02:57 PM

Jesus, tell him to enjoy emulation and STFU. There's no ****ing difference.

"it's not the same"

if I do this he is paying for it.

Hammock Parties 03-28-2009 03:03 PM

Well, at least he's paying for it.

He still won't learn a valuable lesson about piracy.

I hate the Wii points setup as well. I'll have nothing to spend the remaining 200 points on

007 03-28-2009 03:18 PM

I don't think I want to go over $30ish for the console. Super Mario World is the only game he is after so most of these consoles throwing in games are overpriced IMO.

mikeyis4dcats. 03-28-2009 03:26 PM

Post a request on Craigslist...bet someone has one in a closet, they just never thought to sell it.

007 03-28-2009 03:29 PM

Heh, our local gaming shop, Gameworld, wants $70 for just the console. What a flippin joke.

Do you have a wii? if so, you could download the virtual console and play it there.

Not that I want to spend the coin on it but this looks intriguing.

They have always been a rip-off.

Delano 03-28-2009 05:01 PM

There are a few used CD shops in my town that carry old systems and games. Do you have one of those?

Otherwise.. try a pawn shop maybe. Teach your boy some haggling skills.

nope don'have one as we have not purchased any VC games. Don't like how they didn't include that controller with the system. $20 is a little high IMO

Well - my experience is the classic controller does a great job, feels quite a bit like the SNES controller.

It's the exact same layout, but they've added joysticks. If I were you, Guru, I'd spend the $20 on the controller and $5 on the game. That's probably going to cost you a lot less than getting a used SNES system and the game.

Part of me wants to go that route. I just wish I could only buy the points I actually need. The game costs 800 points but I have to buy at least a 1000 point card.

Anybody willing to gift me the game and I can pay for just the points I needed? I really have no interest in VC games at all.

KcMizzou 03-28-2009 06:06 PM

It's like buying antiques. All of us geeks have grown up now, and a working console from our childhood is valuable.

Ever tried to buy an old RPG game? Damned things hold their value. Because the fans are willing to pay it. Chrono Trigger, Dragon Warrior, old FF games, etc. Always way more expensive than say... shooters and sports games.

The VC games are currently the best part of the Wii.

Yeah no kidding. I checked ebay about a week ago for Final Fantasy 7 just for the hell of it and was kind of surprised they were all going for $80+.

Going to pick up Goldeneye and Mario Kart 64 soon.

All because of this thread.

Man, super nintendo has one of the best wrestling games ever. I used to so dominate with Scott Stiener. I think i may want to get me a 64 as well. lol

Yeah, its cool having a little spending money.

I like video games more and more...so I like getting more consoles.

Maybe I'll buy another Wii within the next year. It was the first console I owned and I sold it after buying a PS3.

Super Mario Galaxy is great though.

You should consider a modded Xbox original... you can play just about any emulator you want. With a killer media center program too.... it would be cheap. I would be happy to help you out with any questions... I think you would really like it... You could play downloaded games too.... I have a ton I'd share.......

Buy enough points so you can afford multiple games, that will evenly divide in to the amount of points you buy. Problem solved.

So I would basically get pretty much any games from Xbox and earlier?

Yeah thats just it though. I don't want any more. Thats why I hate they way Nintendo does their points all but forcing you to buy more until you can balance out. M$ was bad about that too but they finally started doing 800 point cards so you can just buy what you want. There is no reason to force people to purchase more points than they need other than to obligate them to purchase more than they wanted in the first place.

Not every... that's a lot of games. If you got a big enough hard drive it would be possible.

But there are emulators for everything from Atari to PS1. And I have a very large number of emulators/games I'd be happy to share...

Buck 03-28-2009 11:25 PM

Cool. I still use mine quite a bit, and if you're in to catching up on old classic games, it's killer. Emulation is great.

Let me know.

Fish 03-28-2009 11:39 PM

The coolest app you'll run on a modded XBox.... http://xbmc.org/about/

007 03-28-2009 11:41 PM

Heh, I just gave my modded Xbox away to my step sister. We never even used it once we upgraded to the PSWii60.

That reminds me, I still need to show them how to access all the emulated games.

Paper Mario.

Conker's Bad Fur Day. Fun. Not classic status, but enjoyable.

I'm considering buying a Famiclone (FC Twin) but the only thing stopping me is that it won't play Super Mario RPG, which is really my sole reason for wanting to get a working SNES.

Get the retro duo instead. I linked it above.

I'm still torn on whether to get the retro duo new or just get a good used console.

Oh sure, right after I bid and win the one posted earlier this pops up on my radar.

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll...m=190295767853

No mario world in that lot but I could have easily traded most of those games in for it.

It does look as if it may have belonged to a smoker though.

EDIT
Good, it ended up going for more than I would have wanted to pay at least. It was sitting at 29.99 when I made this post with 30 minutes left in the auction.

MMXcalibur 03-30-2009 06:05 AM

I still have my SNES with Chrono Trigger, Final Fantasy VI, Secret of Mana, Super Mario RPG, Mega Man X3 and Earthbound. I'm never letting this thing go. Too many good memories!

Also, I might want to get a N64 when I get more money. There was another system that was a big timewaster for me. Nintendo was gold to me....until Pokemon started expanding more and more and the GameCube got involved.

WhitiE 03-30-2009 06:34 AM

i took one to a pawn shop once.... it was working with 2 controllers the mouse and pad for mariopaint and 12 other games...... they offered me 50 bucks..... F word them yo!!!!

Retro Duo doesn't play Super Mario RPG either :( Something to do with a lockout pin on the actual cartridge that has to be removed and it still wouldn't be guaranteed to run 100%. I don't want to mangle it and have to buy a replacement or a wii.

2 minutes in they cover this. so something must have changed since this video if it is not playing now.

Ok, I think I'm convinced enough to take the plunge. Going on ebay now :) Worst case scenario, I can still play all the other NES and SNES games I have in shoeboxes.

I saw that it wasn't compatible on Wiki > http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Retro_Duo

007 04-01-2009 07:08 PM

Got my SNES in the mail today. It works but there is something banging around inside it. Loose part or something. Emailed the seller and he swears it was not like that when he shipped it. How the heck to I go about getting this taken care of now? I would like to open it up but it requires some weird kind of screwdriver to open it.

How do you make claims with the postal service?

If it works I wouldn't worry about it, those things are solid as a rock. Not worth your time and effort.

The fact that it worked definitely helped how I felt about it. I am more or less concerned with the fact this unit will not be sitting in one fixed place and will be moved around. Just wish I knew what it was that was floating around in it really.
