I need the best BBQ joint near Gladstone

A buddy is heading down form Minnesota to play in a softball tourney at Happy Rock Park in Gladstone. He was asking about the best BBQ joint. I gave him the usual suspects but I'm unfamiliar with his options that far north.

Dave Lane 04-10-2009 01:42 PM

Probably LC's on Blue Parkway by the stadium. Maybe Bryants by the race track then you could stop at legends

It takes like 15-20 minutes to get to any of the downtown-ish joints. Surely he can make a small detour.

The best BBQ joint in the entire midwest is "B & C Creations" in Wichita, KS.

It's a "crafty" art gallery, but at lunch during the week they have a BBQ buffet that dominates. Always packed to the gills. The best pork ribs I've ever had. Some of the best if not the best pulled pork I've ever had.

I will admit that thier beef brisket is not the best however... but they sure as f()ck can smoke some pork.

That one might be bit out of his way. But it sounds delicious.

This intrigues me.

What KC places have you personally been to?

Thanks, I'll mention LC's. But after reading a review, I've found they don't serve beer.

KC_Lee 04-10-2009 01:47 PM

Smokestack BBQ on North Oak in Gladstone is ok, not great but not bad either.

Is there still a Bryants in the Ameristar Casino?

I'll be honest only... Arther Bryants, Gates, KC Masterpiece and Smokehouse

maybe I was being a little over the top with my comments.

Baby Lee 04-10-2009 01:51 PM

If you're in the northlands, just go to Stroudts.

Cannibal 04-10-2009 01:51 PM

But, I will say that B & C seriously is among the best BBQ around. The pork ribs and pulled pork are the best i've ever had.

Thanks. I did a Google for Stroudts and the 3rd link provided was from the Planet.

Dave Lane 04-10-2009 01:59 PM

Its actually Strouds and it has great chicken but no BBQ

The chicken place?? Place is horrible..

If it is northland only bbq..

You have Smokehouse and smokebox on different parts of n. oak.. Both are average to below in my opinion.. (5-7 min drive)

There is a place called mighty mo's or something to that affect off or 64th st like you were going to parkville by patty O'guigly's..(10-15 min drive)

Honestly depending on what type of meat they want, Arthurs Bryants in Ameristar is the best choice(for sandwiches imo), about 15-20 minute drive from happy rock..

I frequent B&C. Its a neat place to go eat and the BBQ is top notch for Wichita. That being said I would eat Gates 10 times out 10 if I had to choose between the two. Thats just me but the sauce at B&C leaves something to be desired and the brisket is definitely the weakest part of the buffet.

The Two Brothers buffet isn't half bad either. I work out by the airport so we go to that one on Central all the time. They have good burnt ends and the pulled pork isn't bad either.

Dave Lane 04-10-2009 02:05 PM

Listen buffet BBQ doesn't even count! Seriously WTF is wrong with you! How about school cafeteria BBQ?

Strouds is excellent, but it's not bbq & you'll wait for a table. They're famous for their fried chicken but the grilled pork chops are to die for.

Smoke House has a place on N. Oak, just a mile or two from Happy Rock Park. They also have a place in the Zona Rosa shopping district (mini Country Club Plaza) at I29 & Barry Rd. There's Marty's BBQ in Liberty also. It's about 5-7 miles from the park. If you want AWESOME food, go to Piropos in the Briarcliff area near Riverside. Expensive but delicious. [not bbq] Dress is semi-casual. It's on the web. [I used to live up that way.]

I've eaten at Gates 3 times. Everytime the meat on the ribs was paper thin compared to B & C and the tenderness could not compare.

cookster50 04-10-2009 02:24 PM

Drive the extra time and go downtownish and eat some Danny Edwards burnt ends. Yummy!

BigChiefFan 04-10-2009 02:36 PM

The Smokehouse is a good choice, IMO. It's right in Gladstone, off the main drag, North Oak. It's damn good BBQ, reasonable price, and good service. I prefer them and Jackstack BBQ.

Duck Dog 04-10-2009 02:53 PM

Thanks for the reply's. Just what I was looking for.

Sorry, meant to make that clear. It's damn good chicken and homestyle sides. I could make a meal off the green beans and mashed potatoes.

dtebbe 04-10-2009 03:39 PM

I ate at some BBQ place up there that was in an old railroad depot. It was actually pretty good, and it was a cool place. Can't remember the name though.

Just found it, Wabash BBQ in Excelsior Springs:

EASY.

Smokehouse on North Oak. You won't be disappointed.

Sounds just like Wabash BBQ in Excelsior Springs, MO

Yeah if your wanting near Gladstone can't beat it. I checked it out last December, and liked it alot.

tyton75 04-10-2009 06:09 PM

I live just north of Gladstone.. Smokehouse on N Oak is the only thing that comes close to realy BBQ in the northland... Arthur Bryants in the Ameristar is preferred by me

Wabash is Excellent.. but Excelsior Springs is a pretty long haul.. would be faster to just go downtown

A whole lot faster. Plus the place hasn't been good in years (I know, I live in Excelsior).

I'd second the Ameristar Arthur Bryant's location. That AB's has been serving better, more consistent BBQ than the original Bryant's for over a year now.

I call bullshit.(go figure) The original Bryants is a place of worship for the buds.

You don't even know how much I eat at KC BBQ joints. I spend waaaaaaay too much time and money getting barbecue.

Trust me when I say that the original AB's is mostly disappointing now. It has been that way for two years, maybe a little bit less. This observation has been based off of numerous, numerous visits. (Its not like it makes me happy to say that the original AB's is pretty 'meh' nowadays. It really saddens me, actually).

KcMizzou 04-10-2009 06:23 PM

Count me in on the Smokehouse love. Just the smell from driving by the place drives me nuts.

Also, I usually don't care about the sides, but Smokehouse's beans are something special.

Mecca 04-10-2009 06:24 PM

I've ate at smokehouse about 1000 times.

KcMizzou 04-10-2009 06:27 PM

The one on North Oak is a lot better than the new one in Zona Rosa.

You said you like Strouds, you get no opinion after that..

tyton75 04-10-2009 07:36 PM

I actually think the AB's at the Speedway is better than Ameristar

I haven't been to wabash in a while.. so I'll take your word for it

When I worked at Bobby's, a few of the cooks "doubled up" down at Smokehouse to make some extra $$$. They probably took the bean recepie with them, as it would explain Smokehouse actually having something worth a shit on the menu.
