Chiefs will regret trading Gonzalez

http://myespn.go.com/blogs/afcwest/0...-Gonzalez.html

I've really liked most of what the new Kansas City regime has done this offseason.

Until now.

I hate the decision to trade tight end Tony Gonzalez to Atlanta.

I was against it when Gonzalez requested a trade in October. I was against it this offseason when the talk resurfaced and I am against it now. I am really down on it now that I've heard what the Chiefs got in return for Gonzalez: A second-round pick in 2010.

This certainly balances out Kansas City's steal of a trade for quarterback Matt Cassel and linebacker Mike Vrabel earlier this offseason. It only cost Kansas City a second-round pick for the two players. The least Kansas City should have received in return for Gonzalez was a second-rounder in this weekend's draft.

It just doesn't make sense that Kansas City has to wait until next year to get compensation for Gonzalez. The Chiefs need plenty of help now. They could use another quality rookie.

They could still use Gonzalez as well. He was brilliant last season and he had one of his better seasons with 96 catches.

Gonzalez, who owns every significant NFL receiving record for a tight end, is 33 but is still playing at a high level. He caught 195 passes in the past two seasons. How are the Chiefs going to replace all the catches?

The Chiefs will regret this day. Gonzalez has been a pillar in the community as well as one of the greatest players in team history.

I thought Kansas City owner Clark Hunt had a handle on that when he said last month that the team didn't want to trade Gonzalez. The team needed to talk Gonzalez into being part of the new regime. He could have brought so much to the Cassel era.

Sure, Kansas City probably wasn't excited that Gonzalez didn't show up for a voluntary minicamp last weekend, but he has missed voluntary camps in the past. Gonzalez said last month he was a "neutral" about a trade. Kansas City didn't have to trade him.

This was a bad move by the Chiefs and it was a move that makes it difficult to believe they will be improved in 2009 because of it.

What's the deal with the growing attitude around here that anyone that doesn't agree is a "tool, reerun, idiot" etc?

Micjones 04-24-2009 10:04 AM

I think it's all going to depend on what the aftermath of this trade is.

Obviously I think it's a mistake to take your most reliable pass-catcher away from a newly-acquired $14,000,000 QB. But if we're able to bring Boldin in or draft Crabtree it won't seem like such a big deal. We'll be securing a reliable option elsewhere who'll figure into our future.

I would've liked to have seen Gonzalez retire a Chief, but you know the end is near so why not get something for the guy?

I have mixed feelings...

But I don't think we've seen the last of the wheeling-and-dealing.

Demonpenz 04-24-2009 10:04 AM

I think he is right, just another reason the chiefs never win shit, because of moves like this.

Be patient. It's still just April 23rd.
We've got a long way to go and this is a process.

dirk digler 04-24-2009 10:07 AM

I tend to agree but I will wait until this weekend is over before making a final judgement. If they use that pick to trade up into the 2nd round this year then all is good even though I hate losing Tony.

How about actually having a #2 receiver? Like most successful passing teams?

Crazy crazy thought.....

Come on, that is just silly.

I don't think it's realistic to expect a 2nd round pick for a tight end in his 30s, hall of famer or not, especially not when the player has been vocal about retiring inside of two years.

I think it's a miracle we got what we did.

No shit. Alot of teams have won the SB since Lenny D and none of them had Tony G so he's not the key to KC getting back to the playoffs.

I am getting sick of the work regime...what are they going to call a front office next? Royal Court? Panel of Experts? Legion of Doom?

Really, the reason the Chiefs have not been successful is because they have a history of trading 33 year old players for 2nd round draft picks? Carl was wheeling and dealing away our best players? I actually seem to remember him giving draft picks for players and coaches.

(as my facetwitter status says) We were the winningest team of the 90's. YOU DON'T GIVE AWAY YOUR BEST PLAYERS. I am sure the commish is going to do something about pioli dog pissing on our team

What? This guy thinks we're gonna win the SB THIS year? Like, we can't wait another year (or 2) to use a #2? Are they gonna suspend the draft next year? A #2 is a #2.

Pioli and Haley haven't. They said it's not in their vocabulary. I'm gonna wait to decide how I really feel about this until after this weekend.

You may want to wait until after at least a game in the regular season.

BigRock 04-25-2009 11:05 AM

Did you hear this fat moron on ESPN News? He was completely rambling, going "The Chiefs could take Curry, or Jackson, or maybe Crabtree, and a tackle is possible, and they probably want to trade down" and basically sounding like he didn't have the first idea what he was talking about.

But then the topper: he goes "I don't think they know WHAT they want to do."

Yes, Bill. It's not that you're a moron. It's that Scott Pioli doesn't know what he wants.
