Exactly. Knew it all along.

36 in guarantees?

The Bad Guy 04-25-2009 12:19 PM

People that just hung themselves.

1) Tyler Thigpen
2) Hamas Jenkins
3) Mecca Tritt

Hootie 04-25-2009 12:20 PM

I wonder if Cassel will sign a contract

...before the draft?

anyone know?

Mr. Flopnuts 04-25-2009 12:20 PM

No sense in playing this out and trying to get out of 3. Unless they've already accomplished that.

if he pans out, that is a steal of a contract...absolute steal

if he flames out, it doesn't even matter...the damage will be done

eazyb81 04-25-2009 12:20 PM

Wow, that's crazy we were even negotiating this during the draft.

Nightfyre 04-25-2009 12:20 PM

I hope this is indicative that we have successfully traded down already.

Mecca 04-25-2009 12:20 PM

36 guaranteed seems a little ridiculous.

kcfanXIII 04-25-2009 12:21 PM

think we should have waited until the season starts. too big a risk at this point to sign this deal, IMO.

R&GHomer 04-25-2009 12:21 PM

I honestly didn't see this coming. Hmmm, why would they show their hand this close to the draft. Maybe I'm nuts but it doesn't make any sense. Well, unless they have already traded out of the 3rd spot. That or they know St Louis is trading there pick :shake: Help me understand this

Bowser 04-25-2009 12:21 PM

no way that is guaranteed

dj56dt58 04-25-2009 12:21 PM

doubt it...if so it wouldn't be more than a 6 year 36 million dollar deal

beach tribe 04-25-2009 12:21 PM

I haven't heard anything that said 36 guaranteed. I've heard 36 mil CONTRACT

Mr. Arrowhead 04-25-2009 12:21 PM

We weren't going to dump 14 mil on him in one year. This was inevitable.

6 year deal 36 million.

That's a great deal. $14 million for one year or $36 million over 6 years.

of course it's not, but people will continue to argue about it.

Mecca 04-25-2009 12:22 PM

36 total contract sounds alot more reasonable than 36 guaranteed...if he got 36 guaranteed he'd have the 2nd biggest QB contract behind the one Stafford signed.

irishjayhawk 04-25-2009 12:22 PM

The only thing I don't get is: Why release this info now?

KCUnited 04-25-2009 12:22 PM

There's an attempted exodus to get out to the top 5, not into it.

Nightfyre 04-25-2009 12:23 PM

Well, if its just 36 mil with small guarantees, that would be a tradable contract.

Maybe the trade for 3 happened or They are dead set on Monroe already.

Pioli Zombie 04-25-2009 12:24 PM

The same people who will now rip Pioli for the 36 million he gave Cassel would have no problem if they gave Sanchez 70 million. Cassel has an NFL track record Stafford doesn't have and Stafford is getting a ridicuous contract. Cassel just agreed to commit to KC for 6 years. Well done.

I figured it'd been done for a while but not released so as to help trade bait.

My only logical conclusion is that we've traded #3. Otherwise, it makes no sense because it devalues us taking Sanchez to spite teams.

Mr. Krab 04-25-2009 12:25 PM

absolutely stupid to do this before the draft.

I doubt any other teams seriously thought we could draft Sanchez and hold onto him. That was message board fantasy.

Ok there are alot of things you can defend...no one really thinks he got 36 guaranteed so lets not try to defend the absurdity of the notion.

We can't have already traded the pick because they don't know who is gonna be there at #3 yet. What if the player they want gets taken at #2.

I repeat, it's just stupid to let this info out right now.

Hootie 04-25-2009 12:27 PM

they showed their hand when they drafted the #34 for Cassel...we were never going to use our first two picks on QB's.

Um...

Until today he didn't have a deal, so he wasn't anything more than a 1-year stopgap.

Now that he has a deal, it's obvious that he is the QBotF.

Sanchez is considerably younger and with higher upside, however.

Yep. It's obvious when every thread about Monroe/Smith/Curry suddenly gets overtaken by Bronco and Raiders fans cheering that they would be a great pick.

Did I say it was gauranteed?

In that case how can you rip a 6 year un-gauranteed contact for 36 million when Detroit just gave Matthew Unitas over 70?

Mecca 04-25-2009 12:29 PM

The difference is Cassel has to be good right now he's 27 not 22.

On the flip side, if Sanchez flames out and Cassel doesn't, the Cassel move looks genius. Round two pick for a top 3 pick.

It all depends on how they pan out. I bet, when all said and done, it's a wash.

htismaqe 04-25-2009 12:29 PM

It's $36M total contract value.

Not $36M guaranteed.

If we had taken Sanchez at #3, he probably would have gotten closer to $36M guaranteed.

One is 27 one is 22 you don't start developing a QB at 27 he has to be good now and he is a risky there's no doubt about that.

If he goes out there and looks blah we can't be talking about how he needs "time" because he isn't some young kid that just got drafted.
