If we do become pure 3-4 I can see why...we're gonna have to stop looking at players the same way.

Two major unsung heroes for their teams. Neither dazzled with stats, but everyone on their team knew how important they were. Kind of like nose tackles.

I'm warming up to the pick. It's not a sexy pick, but Jackson is the top-rated 5 technique DE in the draft. I hope he plays like Ty Warren and then some, because I have to say, intially, I was disappointed in the pick.

I think he's a little more Warren than Seymour but he just better be better than Marcus Spears.

You know those videos made of fighter pilots who have been captured and are forced to read statements by their captors? This is how Haley comes off on camera. No eye contact, and all screen charisma of a colonoscopy.

Not the end-all/be-all, of course; this fact has nothing to do with coaching ability. For instance, Belichick makes Britt Hume look like Tony Robbins. But it's still painful to watch.

I don't hate the fact that Pioli wants to draft the D-Line up first and that he took a 3-4 end. I just don't think Tyson Jackson is going to be that good of a pro.

Time will tell. Still got an entire day 2 to roll with also.

Speaking of Dallas DE, it kind of ticks me off we didn't make a harder push for Chris Canty.

I love the way he looks, it's like "let me get this ****ing interview over with so I can get back to scripting the first series for the ****ing Ravens game".

I'll be honest I know I'm guilty of this Jackson has been on TV alot as a high profile player especially with as high as Dorsey went last year..

The thing you find yourself doing atleast I know I did is, who is this fat ****er playing end that can't get any sacks? Then of course we don't factor in he's a 300lb dude playing 4-3 end and he won't do that here.

Well, we pretty much have our ends locked up now with LSU linemen. Dorsey on one end and Jackson on the other.

I don't think Dorsey fits as an end...I think they're gonna try him at NT to see if he can do it or not this year.

A couple guys like him are going to get a chance to see if they have roles in the defense this year.

Aaron Curry would have gotten more than Derrick Thomas. Eugene Monroe would have gotten more than Willie Roaf.

It's the nature of the draft, we were going to overpay for anybody we picked.

Some of them will probably work and some won't.

Dorsey isn't a two-gapper and he works well in space. He fits the 5-tech profile far more than the Nose, imo.

I didn't say it would work but that's what I think they're gonna try.

Wouldn't be surprised if they took Jarron Gilbert tomorrow to be the other end.

If Dorsey bombed they could take Terrence Cody next year.

These last two years have been kinda similar to 88/89. Both top 5 picks, and the second year was when the new regime came in.

If this defense is ever going to be good again, it's going to be because of him and Dorsey (and Tank), even if they're not the ones getting the stats. Which is why I'm honestly a lot happier with this pick than I would have been with someone like Curry or any of the other linebackers.

The person who may benefit most from this is Derrick Johnson.

Although I don't know how in the world they got Zach Thomas to come here if they're really going to a 3-4.

I wish the Chiefs would have spent more time entertaining you on draft day than trying to improve the team and win games. How dare they.

Perhaps, but we are talking completely different types of players.

Well, two things... Zach Thomas played in a 3-4 last year in Dallas. Secondly, a 3-4 defense makes complete sense for him. Many have questioned if he's a little soft to be an aggressive LB--throughout his career. In a 3-4, he can be a pass coverage specialist, which is his forte. What surprises me more is that Thomas plays a role that I think is better suited for DJ. I think what's most likely is that the Chiefs run a hybrid for one year and Thomas plays 4-3 LB. It's a stopgap solution.

Perhaps.....i would guess that Carl and Marty had alot more talent when they came in than what Pioli and Haley have to work with, but that may be more perception than reality.

I'd like to have seen Todd a bit more enthusiastic about Dorsey in that interview. He had a bunch of good things to say about Cassell. But with Dorsey he barely stopped short of calling him a bum.

Dorsey will be a difference maker for us this year, one way or another. If he doesn't play like the 5th overall pick soon, that will really set the franchise back.

You misunderstand why I said that - Thomas absolutely hated playing 3-4 last year. I don't think he'd have come here if that was the position he expected to be put into again.

It's very possible Dorsey doesn't have a spot on this team...they're going to give him a chance to see if he can fit into the scheme.

I don't think he was prepared for that question. He gave a lot of answers that were almost verbatim what was said during the press conference, so I think he'd been coached up on what to say, and it looked like Dorsey wasn't part of it.

Thomas hated playing in DALLAS' 3-4. It's different than say, Pittsburgh's. And we still don't know how we're going to implement it.

We'll see. There was a lot of talk pre-draft that scouts were wondering if he actually gave a shit about football.

There were actually stories that Thomas hated the BS and soap opera drama surrounding the Cowboys, and he just said "I'm not sure I fit here in this scheme" to avoid trashing the team on his way out. That's how some people covering the Cowboys took it, anyway. By the last 1/4th of the season, supposedly it wasn't a secret that Thomas couldn't wait to get out of there.

Probably nobody but him knows for sure, though.

heh. Yep. I saw that since day 1. His on air persona is so Bellichek like its scary....

His issue was that he hated playing next to another ILB, and I don't think it matters what version of the 3-4 he's in in that regard; it's going to be a problem. He wants to be a 4-3 MLB, because that's what he's most comfortable doing.

That's kind of what I'm afraid of. I thought he was the player we needed most in the draft last year. While he didn't really impress, what chance did he have with the surrounding cast and "coaching"? I really hope he doesn't get kicked to the curb because he doesn't fit the new regime/scheme. I don't see us getting much compensation for him if we do lose him - nothing like what we invested - and that would suck. Hopefully he thrives in the 3-4 end position or at least gets to play to his strengths as a 4-3 DT.

In the 3-4, you have a guy that plays similar to a 4-3 MLB and you have the other ILB play a role similar to a 4-3 WLB. Zach Thomas was in the "will" and he wants to play the Mike. Doesn't matter if it's 4-3 or 3-4. In the 3-4 he just wants to be the OTHER ILB.

They may not have much invested in him personally, but he's still on a 5-year, 50+ million contract, with nearly half of that guaranteed. So I doubt he gets kicked to the curb without a serious look. And Haley's talked about how they want to use him prior to now. Like I said, I think he was just caught off-guard by the question, and he just didn't answer it very well, because he's not all that media-savvy yet. I wouldn't read too much into it. Especially not on April 25th. If he sounds like that on August 25th, there might be more to it.

I don't think they will be, but that's just me.

Perhaps they will try Dorsey as a penetrating NT similar to what Ratliff and Dockett do.

Arizona plays a 4-3 under, so Dockett is still playing the 3T rather than the nose.

In the interview you referenced he directly stated that he was signed here as a middle linebacker and that's the way he liked it. He made a point about being a MLB again.

Ok Jay Ratliff that might be the comparison for Dorsey he is a completely different kind of NT than any other team has.

It's probably the best comparison, though Wade's 3-4 is a one-gap scheme and that is probably not what Pioli intends to construct. It's very different from what New England does.

But that doesn't mean we're running a 4-3. It just means he's gonna play the Mike here, as opposed to Dallas, where Bradie James was the Mike.

Dallas' 3-4 system makes the most sense with our current personal. Pendergrast and Gibbs were assitants with Dallas. Scary thing is Tamba playing the DeMarcus Ware role.
