3. KANSAS CITY CHIEFS
TYSON JACKSON, DE, LSU -

CZAR'S FRONT OFFICE TAKE: Tyson Jackson became news last week when word leaked from the Chiefs that they wanted this very versatile defensive end. Being with the Patriots, new GM Scott Pioli was looking for a multi-dimensional defensive player. Jackson has been compared more to Ty Warren than Richard Seymour. He will play end in the Chiefs' new 3-4 alignment and slide inside in the four-man pass rush. However, he better be more like Seymour than Warren. This is the third straight first rounder the Chiefs have spent on a pass rusher or defensive lineman. Pioli was so desperate to get out of this spot and the $35 million in bonus money that he probably will have to eventually pay Jackson that he tried to give the Lions the pick, asking for Detroit's second first-round pick, 20th overall, and their second-round pick, 33rd overall, as compensation even though the Chiefs would be taking a bath on value. Based on the new points chart, the third overall pick was worth 2,200 points and the Lions' compensation was valued at only 1,430 points, well short of what they should have asked for.

SCHRAGER ON THE SCENE:The Chiefs go with Jackson, who curiously wasn't even invited to the NFL Draft. This makes for an awkward moment for the Radio City crowd. Like waiting for Godot to show up in a blinged out Armani suit. No one comes out, and an announcer with some booming, incredible voice scrambles to ask the fans what they want to hear on the loud speakers — "Smells Like Teen Spirit" or some other Seattle grunge era song. Jackson joins his college teammate Glenn Dorsey in Kansas City's Clancy Pendergrast 3-4 defense D-line. Oh, and this just in...Clancy Pendergrast —STILL is the best name in football.

I find it hard to take any sports analyst seriously who thinks Seymour is a better player than Warren. Ask any serious New England fan who he/she thinks is better.

And this isn't the 3rd year straight taking a DL player in the 1st rd.

We drafted Hali, then Dwayne Bowe

Par for the course. FoxSports.com has some of the worst sports writers around IMO.

If anybody disagrees with this statement, go read the foxsports 2010 mock, that should get a good laugh out of you.

I saw that, too.

I lol'd hard at that thing, omg its like a trainwreck in super slo-mo.

That can't be true. The Chiefs get 20 and 33 for #3. I don't believe Pioli makes that trade. I probably would have, but I don't think Pioli does.

Plus, how do the Lions not make that trade if it was offered????

who would you rather have?

Stafford QB with record total contract and guaranteed money
Pettigrew TE
Delmas S

or

#1 Jason Smith LT at Jake Long money last year
#3 Matt Stafford QB at something closer to Matt Ryan money

And now for something completely different...

Michael Crabtree has discovered the NFL version of penicillin:

"Yes, he has size and speed, but why pass on Michael Crabtree? Well, because the silly Crabtree dissed the Raiders, and Davis would have none of that."

genius, Heyward Bey should've been paying attention(although I'm sure he's not too upset to get #7 money)

bdeg 05-07-2009 01:16 PM

the only way the lions don't make that trade is if they weren't crazy about Smith and Monroe, although I don't know their cap situation, I guess maybe they didn't want to pay out two top 3 contracts? tempting deal considering where the value was, tough call

I'm guessing they didn't want to deal with the contract. They've already thrown so much money at the OT position...

maybe the total of the 2 contracts for 1st and 3rd would have been too much for them. I don't know. It seems like an obvious trade to me. bc they could signed Smith like 20 million less at #1 and then paid something closer to Ryan money at #3. it makes sense from a personnel and money standpoint to me. maybe they fell in love with the TE. who knows??

the money they paid last for the OT position was for a RT. they will need a LT soon. I really wish we could have pulled that trade and got Bakkus or Backus. can't remember the spelling. but he could have played RT or G for us. He was the Lions starting LT last year. I would have loved that. getting #20, #33 and Backus for the #3 pick. wishful thinking I guess.

If you trade I think you are still stuck with your rookie cap as calculated by what you have entering into the draft.

No, the allocation is made to the team that actually picked in that spot. So with a draft and trade like Manning and Rivers the Chargers rookie pool was based on them drafting #1 overall and the Giants was based on them drafting 4th. But with a regular old trade for a draft slot the allocation goes with the pick.

Exactly. Signing two top 5 picks might preclude signing ANY of your other draft picks. It's not a tenable situation.
