He was quite a step down from Rich Braham for the Bengals when he retired. I don't know a whole lot of detail about him but I know he has not been anything special at all and if he was he would have been re-signed by the Bengals. But still, I don't mind the signing. I know Jeff Faine was awful with the Browns and then he went on to the Saints and then became one of the highest paid centers with Tampa Bay. Perhaps a change of scenery and coaching will help. He does have decent size for a center and at the very least he offers depth. That now leaves us with him, Waters, Niswanger, Smith, Goff, and even Brown who can all play center. At least we have some versatility on the line.

I wouldn't expect him to be anything more than a backup here.
He struggled quite a bit in Cincy last year.
Tends to have trouble with bigger DT's. Has bad feet.

Meh...

All joking aside, this guy started 41 games over the past 3 years. Should be good competition in training camp!

Yeah, like the Bengal fans know anything. Really, Cincy's problem was that their QB was knocked out, and opposing defenses knew they can cheat heavy against the run, as their back-up QB's weren't any good.

tomahawk kid 05-01-2009 07:19 AM

Well - I like that we're not just going into the season with Niswanger.

Maybe our OL coaches can make something out of him.

A viewpoint from a Bengals fan:

http://stripehype.com/2009/05/01/tgi...ass-announced/

Kansas City Chiefs GM Scott Pioli makes it clear that getting QB Matt Cassell killed is high on his list of priorities for the ‘09 season. A surprised Greg can only note that, “watching Eric Ghiaciuc start and play all 16 games for the 2008 Bengals as their center was like watching a garden hose spray water at a screen door. Everything got through.” WDR just can’t believe the news.

At least Bengals fans can stop worrying about the possibility that Cincinnati will re-sign Ghiaciuc now. At least until KC wises up.

Perfect. At least he's not a "must-have" guy and if he wins the center job in camp, well... we're screwed I guess

That bengal fan is a bit extreme, I watch the Bengals almost weekly (unfortunately) and he was a pretty solid starter. I don't think he will start for us, but is another solid depth pickup.

I agree. Niswanger should win the starting job but I like the fact he will have to earn it from this guy and possibly Smith.

Has there been any indication on what type of blocking scheme the chiefs will use? Last year I recall a switch to the zone scheme, but that seems to have failed, and with new coaches in place it probably changes. Maybe this guy fits the scheme better than in Cincy.

Isn't being shorter theoretically a good thing for a center (i.e. lower center of gravity etc.)?

Yes, but it doesn't make a bit of difference if you suck.

Just Passin' By 05-01-2009 11:05 AM

This signing does bring up the question of what sort of blocking scheme is going to be used by the Chiefs this season to my mind. Has anyone heard whether they might be going with zone blocking, by any chance?

Yes, but 1 inch is really negligible. And having good knee bend can generally overcome it.

Niswanger's biggest problem isn't his height, it's that he lacks good bend.

IIRC, they've said they're going to alter the blocking schemes, but I can't remember if they gave any detail surrounding that.

RustShack 05-01-2009 11:50 AM

I actually don't think this guy was that bad until last year, and maybe that just had something to do with the whole team?

Adrian Jones was definitely bad enough to drag down the guys around him. The problem is that one of them (McIntosh) is horribly bad in his own right, so it's hard to tell.

LaChapelle 07-08-2009 06:47 AM

Getting cut by the Bengals can only mean one thing. He's a good character guy. Not mean enough to get repeat arrests? You're outta here.
