OTA #1 Update 5/18
May 18, 2009 - Bob Gretz |

From Truman Sports Complex

There were 83 players on the field for the Chiefs first OTA session Monday morning.

“We are trying to integrate some football as rookies and veterans are together for the first time,” said Todd Haley. “I thought we got off to a decent start. We had 83 players on the field which I think is excellent given that the OTA’s are voluntary. We had nice weather, so we were all able to be outside.”

The only players on the roster missing from the workout were LG Brian Waters, OLB Mike Vrabel and fourth-round draft choice Donald Washington. Waters and Vrabel have not been at the team’s facilities at all this off-season, while Washington is not allowed to attend under NFL rules because Ohio State’s spring term does not end until the second week of June.

“This is all voluntary so let’s try to focus on the 83 guys that are here and working hard,” said Haley.

Veteran Wade Smith stepped into Waters spot at LG with the first-team offense, while Tamba Hali and Monty Beisel worked at the OLB spots with the first defense.

There were a handful of players who did not take part as they rehab from injury: QB Brodie Croyle, CB Maurice Leggett, TE Tony Davis, LB Turk McBride, DT Tank Tyler, DE Glenn Dorsey, OLB Brian Johnston and RB Kolby Smith.

Observations from the workout:

The No. 1 offense lined up this way: Dwayne Bowe and Mark Bradley were at WR, Brad Cottam at TE, Mike Cox and Larry Johnson in the backfield with Cassel and the offensive front from left to right of Branden Albert, Smith, Rudy Niswanger, Mike Goff and Damion McIntosh.

The No. 1 defense lined up this way: Tyson Jackson, Ron Edwards and Alex Magee along the defensive line, although Dorsey worked with the No. 1 unit at RDE when they did their pre-practice walkthrough segment. At strong OLB spot was Monty Beisel with Hali work at the weak OLB. Inside it was Derrick Johnson and Zach Thomas. LCB was Brandon Carr, RCB was Brandon Flowers with Jarrad Page and Bernard Pollard at safety.

The No. 2 offensive line went like this from left to right: Herb Taylor, Edwin Harrison, Eric Ghiaciuc, Tavares Washington and Barry Richardson.

The No. 2 defense lined up this way: Alfonso Boone, Derek Lokey and Bobby Greenwood, with OLB Darrell Robertson and Andy Studebaker with inside backers Demorrio Williams and Corey Mays. On the corners were Travis Daniels and Ricardo Colclough, with Jon McGraw and DaJuan Morgan at safety.
Working at OLB were Hali, McBride, Studebaker, Beisel, Robertson, Johnston and Walters.
Working at ILB were Johnson, Thomas, Mays, Williams, Wes Dacus, Jovan Belcher and Corey Smith.

When the squads came together for the seven-on-seven passing drills, Bowe dropped the first two passes thrown his way,
The No. 1 pick draft choice had a nice pass defense as he knocked a pass out of the sky with his hand at the line of scrimmage.

Infidel Goat 05-18-2009 12:21 PM

Waters is only on the chopping block if we want our new QB to be split in half.

Kelli Croyle was seen leaving Pioli's office with white residue on her dress.

Good ****. Beisel is our replacement if 900 year old Vrabel goes down. With Tamba on the other side? :deevee:

What a belabored phrasing.

It seems like every single defensive lineman drafted by Herm is recuperating from injury.

Hopefully Barry Richardson is making a good impression. I kind of figured Colin Brown was going to be a lock at the 2nd team RT spot today. Good sign IMO.

I think it still has to do with the leg injury he had in college. IIRC, a few weeks ago at the mini-camp before the draft, that is what they were saying.

Waters is a little bitch. How disappointing. He'd rather play for a career loser like Herm Edwards than a no-bullshit, get-things-done, up-and-comer like Todd Haley.

Chiefnj2 05-18-2009 12:44 PM

I wonder if Dorsey wasn't traded, in part, because of this mysterious injury.

Coach A doesn't make him do crap, and treats him like a leader.

Coach B is THE leader and expects you to work your *** off. Which do you think Waters will work for?

Interesting thought, although one could argue that his time at RDE during the practice would negate this possible concern. Either way he needs to get better and play his butt off, whether it is for a trade or to start. A D-line with Jackson and Dorsey on it is going to be pretty interesting.

I'll ask this question in this thread. Is there anymore to the Dorsey to the Bills for Parrish and 2 draft picks rumor that somebody was floating around in the Mecca thread late last week?

Chiefnj2 05-18-2009 12:57 PM

It looks like the focus for 2009 is the year of finding out whether any of Herm's draft picks can transition to the 3-4.

So why is Zack Thomas so excited to be here?

I say Vrabel accepted the trade. If he's not going to do his job the same way he did it in New England, then yeah, he should retire. Otherwise, get his ass in the locker room and start doing that team leader bullshit we sent him in here to do

Zach Thomas is happy here because he found a team that would pay him.

He had a choice to come here - likely because he wasn't getting other offers, and a paycheck is better than no paycheck when you still want to play.

Vrabel was forced to come here.

Apples and oranges.

There was speculation that NE was going to release him (salary) so Pioli and BB worked a deal to save him some face. I would think if he was going to retire he they would have clued him in on the transaction and he would do it then.

That being said, it is a little disappointing because the old guys were brought in to show the new guys "how to work".

Our LB's are just fracked.

Hammock Parties 05-18-2009 01:38 PM

Compare and contrast Waters with a supposed "cancer" like Owens:

Quote:

WR Terrell Owens was on-hand Monday as the Bills opened their minicamp this week. Owens said he believes the voluntary workouts are important.

"This time is very, very valuable because the offense is new to me," he said. "So the more I can be in-sync with the team and be around the team and really soak in and absorb all the terminology, it's going to be some different plays, but when it comes to running routes, that's second nature to me. Right now, my focus is just honing in on the plays and learning the concepts of different pass patterns. And once I get that down, I'll just go out there and play free."

dirk digler 05-18-2009 02:05 PM

Cassel is going to get killed behind that O-Line unless he learns how to read the D and throw in like .5 seconds

With Goff I wouldn't say our line is any worse than the bruised up line he played behind last year.

Hammock Parties 05-18-2009 02:16 PM

People are really overrating a guard's role in pass protection...

DE's get to the QB's the most, but DT's still get pressure. I think Shields played a pretty big role in protecting Green, granted not as big of a role as Roaf did.

I might just be pessimistic considering how shitty the Cheaps have been since..... awhile..... but

Beyond the Cassel trade-I have not been impressed at all with who they are bringing in.

Seems like a bunch of has-beens on their last legs... yes leadership is important and all that, but the draft received terrible reviews from nearly everyone.

TG now Waters-will be very hard to replace. Those lineups don't look like a contender in any shape way or form.

If Don Pioli can accomplish one thing in his early tenure with the Chiefs, it would be to improve our conditioning and player development programs. It seems to me that the Chiefs have sucked at both for a long time. Coupled with Herm's "Camp Hugs And Booboo Kisses", it's a wonder any of these guys survived a season. I expect that, should Haley introduce a more aggressive approach to camp, many of our 2nd- and 3rd-year guys will be sucking air as well as Haley's dong in an effort to get more bench time.
