Job Offers In Other Places
Hypothetical: You're working at your job, doing whatever it is that you do, when your phone rings. It's a corporate headhunter on the prowl.
You have a short chat, and on a whim you send him your resume. A week later, you have a firm job offer in hand with a company that is a virtual clone of your company. Same quality of company, same type of boss, same type of work, same type of office environment, same benefits, same chances of advancement. The only differences are: 1. The new job is in a different city/country. 2. The new job pays 20 percent more in real terms, and includes an adjustment for the cost of living in the new location. When the following poll is posted, please check all of the locations where you would move and take the new job. As a bonus question, in the situation above, in what city would you be most happy about getting the offer? It can be any city in the U.S. or the rest of the world, but must be more than 100 miles from where you currently live. |
They only other place in the states Id live is back in Honolulu, god I cant wait to get back.
|
if this is your way of offering me a job, kevin, the answer is yes.
|
Miami would be fun and new until the next impossible dream job popped up somewhere else.
|
Would I still be banging the secretary at lunch in the new office?
|
I would move to Vancouver, Paris, or London.
|
Don't leave him Daface, I'm sure you're a vital and valued cog in bRainman, Inc.
|
None of the above. I've been to a surprising number of these locations.

"A small town in Montana (Let's pick Lame Deer.)" Dude, of all the small towns in Montana you pick Lame Deer? The place is a ****hole. I won't even drive through that place at night without the Glock 20 next to me with the 15 round clip. The rez is not a good place to live.

Kevin, you don't have to go through all of this just to find out what it will take to hire me. Just ask.
|
Lame Deer's on a reservation? I just picked it because I find the name interesting.
Okay, you can pick a non-reservation Montana town. But something on the eastern plains. |
How about a Mo town for those of us who already live elsewhere?????????????
|
Walla Walla? Why not Seattle? Walla Walla is cool I guess, if you like visiting death row murderers in prison.
|
I would be willing to relocate in 8 yrs. My son is 10 and lives with his mother.

Was, San Jose, Costa Rica, a trick question?

On the other hand, the best thing about Lame Deer, is speeding through town and seeing it in your rear view mirror, all the while wondering if you are going to have to Glock someone up before you get the hell out of there. South Pole research station sounds perfect, although there may be a few too many people.

Tops on that list would be Alaska and Hawaii (been to both), and the U.K., Switzerland, and Finland.
But I'd try any of 'em... as long as they don't have too many Yankees fans. |
By the way, I selected:
Hilo- because it a tropical paradise with all manner of beach activities Sydney- because it is near the Great Barrier Reef and I love diving, also near New Zealand which I hear is so much better than the Old Zealand Knoxville- because their MBA program is intriguing, Knoxville has great music and, I believe, Tenn. has a lot of caves for spelunking |
I think the list of places I wouldn't be willing to move to would be much shorter.
|
For that raise I wouldn't move out of the country. Most of the other places I would move.

By the way, if I were choosing anywhere, it would probably be Madrid, Spain or somewhere in Central or South America. Belize or Honduras or Costa Rica (but somewhere like Jaco or Drake).
|
Please offer Larry Johnson this deal.

If I was going to move, it would be to San Pedro Belize. I seriously may do that some day.

Where's Amsterdam?????? :cuss:

I can't imagine anyone making a conscious decision to move to Odessa, TX.

I moved from KC to San Diego 13 years ago and I love it here.

The problem for me with the nice Cities in Cali is the real estate market.
|
I'd go pretty much anywhere in the continental United States except for Florida or any major cities.
|
Does my new boss post on ChiefsPlanet too? That'd be hard to replace.
|
As to #1 place to live:
Wife says Key West. I says KC. |
The cost of living adjustment would hurt me, not help me, so that 20% could turn into a loss depending on which podunk town I choose.

If I could get a 20% increase on top of what I make in Seattle, I'd move south to podunk anywhere and be a ****ing king.

Hilo was popular. Does everyone know how much it rains there though?
Hilo gets 142 inches of rain per year. The US average is 37. It is also very remote. Too rainy for me. I would consider Oahu (Kailua) in Hawaii. It is close to Honolulu for the city attractions but also far enough away to enjoy the "Paradise" of Hawaii |

God willing, my next move will be to a remote, sparsely-populated area with plenty of land available...or Phuket, Thailand. Also, what if the cost of living adjustment is negative? I wouldn't want that.
|
So, put us to the test. Anyone want to offer me a 20% raise and move me somewhere? Whatcha got?
|
I get about 3-4 emails a day with companies/consults wanting to know if I would be interested in this or that position in "X" state/city.
Usually the only ones I will respond to are the ones in Southern Cal, Arizona and Florida. just got this one..... Myname is Ben Pourciau with Capital Staffing Solutions Inc. You left off Seville, Spain...
Which is where I moved to accept a job offer six months ago. In my career field we receive overseas opportunities on a fairly regular basis. I'd hemmed and hawed at actually accepting such an offer before I finally got the gumption to overcome inertia and make the move from the US to Europe. It wasn't a difficult decision as such. Divorced, grown child, not a home owner, so no established roots - makes it easier to just 'haul up tent stakes'. I was certainly willing to move to Spain as I had spent three years in Madrid 20 or so years ago and loved it--that made the idea of moving away easier. My paycheck also increased, and I'm blessed to say quite a bit more than 20%--that made the idea of moving even easier! |

I picked what I picked. Don't feel like going through them all again. Is *****et really a place? That is cool, but I wouldn't live in Thailand. Might visit, that's where they filmed that move 'The Beach' right?
As for any city in the world, I have no idea. I have been a lot of places (more than the average American I would say) and I really can't think of a favorite place. I enjoyed northern Utah except for the strange Mormon culture. Japan was fun, but too far away from loved ones, same for Europe, plus most of the people I've encountered in Europe are genuine assholes. Colorado is nice, except for their sports teams. |

My Choices
Walla Walla, WA Denver, CO Dover, VT Providence, RI Toronto, Canada Sydney, Australia I chose the places that I've been too and liked (Toronto, Denver, Providence, Dover) and 2 other places that seemed like they wouldn't be too busy (i.e. NY, NY) or too country (i.e. Lame Deer, MT). That was Walla Walla, WA and Sydney, Australia. I also strayed away from countries that don't speak English or that are in Europe. |
I live in Lawrence, and I'm not interested in anyplace else. My kids are happy, my wife is happy, I'm happy. Great little city, good restaurants, great schools, a couple of nice golf courses, good proximity to Kansas City. And when the weather is warm, the scenary is outfreakin'standing.
