ROBERT AYERS' DEAL IS "DONE"

The Denver Broncos have been waiting exactly one week to sign both of their first round draft selections, and get them on the field for training camp. As of now, half of that objective is accomplished with defensive end/outside linebacker Robert Ayers wrapping up his deal.

"The deal is done," Ayers' agent Tony Agnone just told Fox31's Josina Anderson at 2:45pmMST.

"It's a 5 year deal," Agnone added.

The Broncos not only acquired the former Tennessee Volunteer with the 18th overall pick, Ayers was the only player they signed to address their needs in the front seven.

With the Broncos defense wrapping up last season with a 29th overall ranking after allowing an average of 374.6 yards per game, it was imperative for the club to get this deal done.

Ayers’ agent Tony Agnone was able to finalize a contract after in a “face-to-face meeting” with team representatives with his client in attendance.

Ayers’ camp thought they had a deal done with the Broncos last week Wednesday-just two days after Ayers was due to report to Dove Valley with the rest of the rookies, quarterbacks, and injured players last week Monday.

The next day FOX31 Sports was informed this initial deal had fallen apart.

Now the disconnect in the negotiations between the two sides are a thing of the past.

Several experts have already projected that Ayers will become a starter on the unit sooner rather than later based on his initial workouts with the club, his collegiate record, and the teams current player roster.

In 2008, Ayers exploded on the NFL radar his senior year when he became a starter at right end. Known as one of Tennessee’s most physically intimidating defenders, Ayers recorded 49 tackles, three sacks, and a team leading 15.5 tackles for losses. He also logged six pressures, and one interception that season.

As a senior in 2008, Ayers earned second-team All-Southeastern Conference honors after leading the conference with 15.5 tackles for a loss in addition to pacing the team’s defensive line with 49 tackles.

Ayers began his collegiate career at Tennessee playing outside linebacker before making the switch to defensive end as a redshirt freshman. Now, Ayers is prepared to play both roles -- and possibly others -- during his first season with the orange and blue. He will likely do plenty of moving around in defensive coordinator Mike Nolan's 3-4 scheme. According to Ayers, his role could fluctuate. He might be rushing from the nickel package at defensive end. If it's a base package, he could be at outside linebacker. At other times, he may be lined up at defensive tackle.

"This is a perfect defense for me," Ayers said. "Out of all 32 teams -- I’m not with the other teams -- but I don’t think there could be a better match for me. The way I play and the things I do well fit perfectly with this defense."

Does leading the SEC in tackles for loss mean anything to you? Most of the DE's we have (Dumervil, Crowder, and Jarvis Moss) are pass rushers only. Ayers can play the run and rush the passer. He was always making plays behind the line of scrimmage and if I remember correctly he was up there in QB pressures as well.

Is four quarterback pressures in 2008 considered up there?

Why did the Broncos hold-out their best cornerback on their team, their defensive tackle who recorded the most tackles last season among all Bronco defensive lineman, as well as their offseason acquisition at safety?

“They failed it. They failed their conditioning test,” alleged one source with knowledge of this situation.

I also asked another team source, why were these players absent from practice Friday, and this source replied, “(they) all failed.”

The question is what exactly did these three players fail? Did they fail the entire conditioning test, or did they fail a certain portion of the test?

“They ran 300 yard sprints. On the field they are 50 back, 50 back, 50 back sprints until you hit 300. Then you have like a resting period in between the next one. Like you literally get at the goal line and run 50 yards forward, and run 50 yards back.
Now, you have to run three of these (300 sets) back to back to back, but you got to do them in a certain amount of time," answered the source with knowledge of the situation.

When the other team source was asked for clarity, did all three players fail this portion of the test, the team source replied back, “yeah.”

When I asked one of these three players directly, after an agreement not to disclose their identity, if they in fact failed the conditioning test, and if that was the reason for their absence Friday, they replied, “It was nothing more than precaution.”

When I said to this same player “so you didn’t fail the 300 sprint portion of the test,” they replied, “They just didn’t wanna throw us out there until we were physically ready.”

Then, early Saturday morning, I learned that all three players suddenly were expected to participate in the team’s only practice at 2:30pmMST (as posted in the Denvr_Sports_Insider blog).

When I contacted this same player again, thereafter to ask what changed overnight, and to ask if he and the rest of the guys finally passed their test, the player said, “It didn’t change overnight. It was a process. We just did certain things to make sure we were ready before we were out there.”
