Smoltz Joins Cards!

I think he would be a perfect fit with Duncan and an 8th inning role.

ITS FOOTBALL SEASON!

I'll call myself a noob, didnt look at the 2009 cards thread. Mod feel free to delete.

allen_kcCard 08-19-2009 02:21 PM

Screw deleting the thread, the Cards should not be confined to a single thread anyhow...the Royals season may be over (shocking, I know), but as usual we Cards fans get to enjoy an overlap of our baseball season WITH football.

Some posters are pretty touchy about the Cardinals stuff on here. Just keep it all in the one thread, no biggie. A lot of us on here.

jesus, you guys can ****ing have him. sox fan here (red, not white or black), and he was HORRIBLE this year for us.

blaise 08-19-2009 02:24 PM

Enjoy his 8+ ERA

JD10367 08-19-2009 02:24 PM

Smoltz, Smoltz... oh, I remember, the guy I saw in a Red Sox uniform whose tank is totally empty. About as exciting as signing Pedro Martinez or Brett Favre...

He still misses bats and doesn't walk batters.

They don't need to walk when they're hitting doubles.

Thanks for the generousity...and for paying almost all of what is left of his 5.5 million.

He was still good against righties this year, and was good at the beginning of games, which to me works out great to fill the spot of being a setup man when we have an effecting situational lefty in the pen already, and hell, he can even have the 5th spot to see if he can prove to people he is good to go as a starter next year.

this should definately help the cards in post season

Titty Meat 08-19-2009 02:47 PM

Anybody with a good K/BB ratio still shows promise as a pitcher. Smoltz's small sample size with the Red Sox is not enough evidence to run his ass out of the game.

Not for every team, maybe, but for the Sox it seemed to be. Every team isn't the same though.

blaise 08-19-2009 02:54 PM

I'll just add something to that- Even had the Sox made the playoffs there was a very good chance he wouldn't have been on the playoff roster anyway.

Smoltz at 68 years old makes me feel better than Mitchell Boggs or Todd Wellemeyer at any age.

Throw Brad Thompson in there too for S&G's

CoMoChief 08-19-2009 03:30 PM

He should be better in the NL I would believe.

But an 8+ ERA is an 8+ ERA so...........i dunno.

He's always been one of my favorite pitchers in baseball and I was excited when I heard he was coming back that I picked him up on waivers in my fantasy league only to be VERY disappointed and quickly learned that was a huge mistake.

Smoltz should retire after this season and get his PGA Tour card. He's one hell of a golfer.
