Chiefs Announce Five Transactions, Trim Roster to 75 Players..Toomer gone...

The Kansas City Chiefs announced on Tuesday that the club has made five transactions in anticipation of the NFL’s first mandatory cutdown deadline. All NFL teams are required to trim their roster down to 75 players today. Kansas City released WR Amani Toomer, DE Alfonso Boone and T Cameron Goldberg. The club also placed WR Devard Darling on the Reserve/Injured List and RB Kolby Smith on the Reserve/Physically-Unable-to-Perform List.

Toomer's gone in this round of cuts?

I definitely did not see that coming.

Darling > Toomer!

DaKCMan AP 09-01-2009 01:52 PM

I thought Toomer would be able to contribute.. too bad.

aturnis 09-01-2009 01:52 PM

No surprises here.

Chiefnj2 09-01-2009 01:53 PM

They didn't really give Toomer much of a chance. They had him running with the 4th string all the time.

The Franchise 09-01-2009 01:53 PM

Jeez.....our WRs are going to suck something fierce.

Coach 09-01-2009 01:54 PM

The Chiefs should just consider releasing Kolby Smith once he is able to recover from his injuries.

Probably didn't help when the offense had to wait several seconds for Toomer to get back to the LOS following one of the sacks to Matt G late in the game Saturday.

aturnis 09-01-2009 01:54 PM

The biggest surprise for me is that they haven't brought more linemen or receivers in to compete. I'd think there are plenty of guys they already know aren't going to make this team that are already expendable. I'd also think that a few of the Olineman cut would be better than some of our worst guys.

From Kent Babb's Twitter.

kb_kcstar Brodie Croyle will start Thursday at St. Louis, and Todd Haley said this game could determine who the Chiefs' No. 2 is entering reg. season.

Why? He's showed some spark in the past and probably won't fumble as much as some of these other guys. I say if anything, they put him on IR and let him compete next year.

it didnt hurt Lelie, he was making catches in the last game, if hes not showing anything in practice, what makes him deserve to roll with the 1st string

with the WR we've got, you'd think Toomer would have made the squad. i was surprised by this move, as i expected Toomer to contribute a little this season. Todd Haley is a MF'n Pr*ck.

You're no good to the team if you are constantly getting injured and spending time in the IR/PUP list.

I am surprised it is that close. What does Haley see in Thigpen?

Mr. Flopnuts 09-01-2009 01:59 PM

Toomer must have really had some problems to get cut without so much as an opportunity to run with the starters.

The Franchise 09-01-2009 02:00 PM

We should go out and offer up a 4th/5th round pick for Reggie Brown of the Eagles. The dude is buried in their depth chart and I think that he's got the talent to be a damn good #2 on this team.

Potential trade. Easier to trade a potential backup than a 3rd stringer.

The flipside of that is that Toomer couldn't perform against the fourth string of the other teams.

Plus, you have to earn your spot on the depth chart.

Did he have anyone that could throw him the ball? Thigpen sure as hell couldn't.

DaWolf 09-01-2009 02:12 PM

Seriously with the Toomer comments? The Giants cut him and he even admitted he had virtually no suitors outside of the Chiefs. We took a look and found out he was done.

Also with Darling done, it should open up a spot for Lelie because Darling was the only other "speed" guy on the field who could try to stretch the field.

Now we'll just have to see if Engram can make it past this weekend...

I'm with Coogs on this one I think Haley is playing Thigpen strictly as trade bait. At least that is my hope.

I just reviewed the current depth chart, how depressing. As Dane keeps preaching this team has a serious need for talent especially on offensive. They have a good nucleus to build on, but it is hard to see how they can win 6 games this year.

Lelie not only has speed other than Bowe he is the only other receiver that can out-jump a corner on a deep ball. With his combination of height, speed, experience, and jumping ability teams have to respect him when he goes down field. Darling was the only other guy that came close.

Don't worry.

According to sports radio in New Delhi, there's a rumor going around that Anquan Boldin is as good as ours. The only holdup is compensation and whether it'll be a 6th or 7th round pick. I checked this up with my inside sources in Perth, Australia and they're claiming this as legit.

tonyetony 09-01-2009 02:35 PM

Toomer just can't seperate from coverage anymore, he's done.

Engram might be next, I believed Haley when he said there are no sacred cows around here.

The reason we have to see who the #2 is that one of the prerequisites for the job is a beating heart. We'll see who's alive after Thursday night and go from there.

Or they're being nice and cutting Toomer (and Boone) early so they still have a chance to catch on elsewhere. That's probably not much of a concern for the likes of Copper and Wright.

The reason I think the early release of Toomer had to do with Bowe's improvement is because the two have essentially same body type and both possession/YAC type receivers. Toomer when signed when Haley wasn't sure he had a big body wideout he could count on.

Same, but in a different way. In a perfect world, Croyle only sees the field once in a blue moon. That's what I'd call the perfect #2.

TRR 09-01-2009 04:27 PM

I like the way this WR group is shaking out. I was never a fan of Darling, and Toomer just didn't have much left in the tank. Lelie has shown the ability to get open, be it the second or third units playing, and looks to be the only legit deep threat on the roster. Lelie could have a big year.

Bradley, Lawrence and Engram should round out the other 3 spots. That gives KC three outside WR's, and two slot WR's, one being a developmental player in the return game.

Same here, a possession guy who can run block.

He never was fast, but he must've really lost a lot recently & he's not big enough to out body/get position on guys for the ball. I'll take Haleys judgement on it.

KCDC 09-01-2009 04:30 PM

No one wanted Toomer, so cutting him means he will be available if we ever wanted him back (which I doubt). Copper, Lawrence and Wright have potential as KR and might be claimed by another team.

For this reason, amongst others, expect Engram to be cut in the next wave.

I didn't write that... I wrote that at the time of the Toomer signing Haley apparently couldn't count on Bowe to be his big body possession/YAC type wideout (I'm also not saying that is all Bowe is). Thus the signing of Toomer.

Think about everything Haley has done up this preseason. Now rewind back some 3 or so weeks and I get the feeling, knowing what we as fans now know about Haley, that it could be entirely pausible that Toomer might've even taken snaps from Bowe in the regular season, IF Bowe's practice habit and consistancy (or whatever it is that Haley didn't like) didn't improve.

That's why I still think Toomer's release has a little bit to do with Bowe's improvement.
