Chiefs Depth Chart Released: Bowe, Tank on the First Team

http://cdn2.sbnation.com/profile_ima...08/TG_tiny.jpg by Joel Thorman on Sep 7, 2009 11:57 AM CDT

The Kansas City Chiefs have released their newest depth chart

OFFENSE
Wide Receiver: Dwayne Bowe, Terrance Copper
Finally! Dwayne Bowe's "demotion" is over. Chiefs fans, and fans of good players across the league, were shocked when Todd Haley sent him down to the third string with the first release of the depth chart over a month ago.
The fact that he's on the first string for the real games doesn't surprise anyone, nor should it. Bowe is far and away the best receiver on the team.
Left Tackle: Branden Albert, Ikechuku Ndukwe
Herb Taylor was previously backing up Albert, who's firmly entrenched as the No. 1 left tackle, but he was released over the weekend. Ndukwe will be serving double duty as the No. 2 on the left and the No. 1 on the right side.
Left Guard: Brian Waters, Wade Smith
No changes
Center: Rudy Niswanger, Wade Smith
Again not much of a surprise. Andy Alleman was previously listed as the backup center but has been seeing all his time at guard.
Right Guard: Mike Goff, Andy Alleman
Things are starting to make a little more sense. Alleman was listed at center but had only seen time at guard. Hopefully Alleman gives Goff a run for his money.
Right Tackle: Ikechuku Ndukwe, Ryan O'Callaghan
One of the most interesting battles of camp. Both of these players weren't on the roster three weeks ago so this position is certainly up for grabs.
Tight End: Sean Ryan, Brad Cottam, Jake O'Connell
No changes.
Wide Receiver: Mark Bradley, Bobby Engram, Quinten Lawrence
No changes.
Quarterback: Matt Cassel, Brodie Croyle, Tyler Thigpen, Matt Gutierrez

Fullback - Cox
Running Back: Larry Johnson, Jackie Battle, Jamaal Charles, Dantrell Savage

DEFENSE

Left Defensive End: Tyson Jackson, Wallace Gilberry
Gilberry moved over from the right side following the departure of Alfonso Boone.
Nose Tackle: Tank Tyler, Ron Edwards
Tank Tyler takes the No. 1 spot. They have rotated throughout camp.
Right Defensive End: Glenn Dorsey, Wallace Gilberry, Alex Magee

Left Outside Linebacker: Mike Vrabel, Andy Studebaker

Left Inside Linebacker: Demorrio Williams, Monty Beisel, Derrick Johnson
Right Inside Linebacker: Corey Mays, Jovan Belcher
Right Outside Linebacker: Tamba Hali, Turk McBride, Pierre Walters
Left Cornerback: Brandon Flowers, Donald Washington, Maurice Leggett
Washington moves ahead of Leggett, which is more appropriate considering Washington played well last week and Leggett is a nickelback.
Right Cornerback: Brandon Carr, Ricardo Colclough

Strong Safety: Mike Brown, DaJuan Morgan

Free Safety: Jon McGraw, Jarrad Page

SPECIAL TEAMS (No changes)

Punter: Dustin Colquitt
Kicker: Ryan Succop
Kickoffs: Ryan Succop
Holder: Dustin Colquitt, Tyler Thigpen
Punt Returner: Dantrell Savage, Quinten Lawrence, Maurice Leggett
Kick Returner: Jamaal Charles, Dantrell Savage, Quinten Lawrence

There simply - has - to be some Machiavellian reason for DJ to #3.

Guess Haley isn't done "motivating.". I give this depth chart all of a week before it's rewritten.

The thought of DeMorrio Williams taking on guards and fullbacks inside the tackles....inspires confidence.

I really don't care who we trot out there Sunday. Pioli has said it may not be the best players, but the right players. I'm ready to put the whole 6-26 CP/Herm/Gun thing behind us, and if these guys feel McGraw and Brown give us the best chance to do it, then I am fine with it.

'Hamas' Jenkins 09-07-2009 11:42 AM

There is some merit to this depth chart being a ruse for motivational purposes. At some point, he has to call the bluffs of players who think that this is just a short term thing to make them work harder in camp. Once it affects their PT in games that actually matter, then they might get the message.

We're going to get rolled like Poland in the Blitz, anyway, so if this gets DJ's head out of his ass, it's worth it.

But there's no reason why Jon McGraw should be starting for this, or any team.

Hog's Gone Fishin 09-07-2009 11:42 AM

I'm getting very, very concerned about our HC 's ability to evaluate talent.

okiedokieokoye 09-07-2009 11:42 AM

It's still early right? Changes to be made?

why is d johnson listed as the 3rd string ilb?

Why do some of you have such a hard on for Derrick Johnson? The guy was outplayed by Mays and Williams in preseason and thus he lost his job. The guy has been underwhelming since he was drafted.

Red Dawg 09-07-2009 11:56 AM

DJ 3rd string my fugging ass! Battle ahead of Charles? That's crazy insane!

He's a soft University of Texas pussy. Always has been. So now he can fade away like Julian Battle or he can get pissed off and realize his potential. Hopefully he'll get tougher and fight.

DBOSHO 09-07-2009 11:58 AM

idk why battle is 2nd string.

lj and charles are 1a and 1b

Absolutely not, while Mays played well, and deserves a starting spot, it's not DJ's. Williams did not perform as well as DJ did, that's ridiculous.

Halfcan 09-07-2009 12:00 PM

wow Herm's draft will be known for drafting a great Punter-thats it.

It is obvious he could not spot talent if it humped his leg.

I don't really think that means much. All will be used according to the situation. Charles will still be the 1st string passing down back.

I'd agree that he's never been consistent & will never be a defensive captain...but the raw tools are undeniable.

If sending him out for coffee & doughnuts gets him fired up, then i guess its a good thing.

About the only thing Herm did right was draft Defensive backs.

Flowers,Carr,Page

Didn't he also pick up leggett off the waiver wire?

im just saying that , even though battle has ran well, charles has looked like our best back. and it makes more sense, to me anyway, to bring in a spell back that brings something different to the table

I agree. C'mon DJ get pissed off and quit running around blocks!

riskrevival 09-07-2009 12:09 PM

just trade these former starters already. If they don't like Derrick Johnson just get something in return for him instead of dicking around with this 3rd string shit. I could care less either way, I don't think he is that good and is one of the more overhyped players the fans make him out to be, so it's not a big deal to me if he isn't playing. Page on the other hand, just because McGraw hustles in practices doesn't mean he's going to ****ing have a clue whats going in game. It's like a soldier who does awesome in training and then hides and crumbles in the battlefield when it becomes real.

RJ 09-07-2009 12:10 PM

Forgive my ignorance - we don't get Chiefs preseason games where I live- but how did Charles end up at 3rd on the RB depth chart? Is it indicative of poor play on his part? Or did he play well but Battle played better?

thats what im wondering imo charles has looked the best

RustShack 09-07-2009 12:13 PM

I like how Charles speed makes people here forget how much he sucks. Charles has yet to outperform Battle or Savage. His few big plays are voided by him fumbling more.

Mr. Arrowhead 09-07-2009 12:14 PM

Charles is a 3rd down back, IMO he will never be a full time RB. So if LJ got hurt, i think Battle is more suited as the back up over JC.

Mr. Krab 09-07-2009 12:14 PM

Charles looked ok but he still looks like a 3rd down/Passing type back. Battle looked good too and is much more suited to pounding the ball which is what we will have to do with our sucky Oline.

savage has had 1 good run.

TEX 09-07-2009 12:17 PM

Man, you know the team is bad, but it really doesn't hit home until you see the depth chart. YIKES. This is easily the worst 53 man roster in the league.

This

He has fumbled in games and IIRC was fumbling in practices as well and Haley has been on his ass about it. Won't really surprise me if he is playing time goes down until he learns to hang onto the ball more. We have enough troubles without giving the ball away to other teams.

wazu 09-07-2009 12:17 PM

I think they've got tailbacks effectively split into two separate positions for different packages. Johnson/Battle are both bigger/inside runners, and Charles/Savage are the change of pace/third down backs.

Thats one more than Charles with less fumbles.

and yet we still only put out 1 waiver claim after cuts.

charles probably has a better average ypc than savage even with the long run. and fumbles can be cured. ask Tiki Barber.

Hammock Parties 09-07-2009 12:21 PM

Charles will touch the ball more than Battle this year. I guarantee it.

Anyway, a depth chart without the name Pollard is enough to make me do cartwheels.

DBOSHO 09-07-2009 12:21 PM

poor Kolby...

riskrevival 09-07-2009 12:22 PM

yea i have not a ****s clue why we only put 1 waiver claim after cuts. Especially with the roster we have, there are a bunch of guys they could have brought in. But apparently we will only sign/deal with guys that have played on the same 4 or 5 teams our front office has experience with, which is ****ing pathetic.

DBOSHO 09-07-2009 12:23 PM

Question..where did Battle even come from? i dont remember us drafting him.

Because if they bring in unknowns then it could end up being a downgrade... Or it could be someone whos not any better but is now worse for the team because they have no idea whats going on.

We didn't. He sign with Dallas as a UDFA and then we signed him to our practice squad.

McGraw at safety = deep balls to his side.

God forbid they prefer players that they have firsthand knowledge of.

Every coach in the NFL leans that way.

Yea but you like Dujuan Morgan. He's the starwman for all you people who liked Richardson and Taylor too.

It's not ridiculous if you know what you are looking at. Williams clearly outplayed Johnson. Which is um you know, what he's starting and Johnson is third string.

Blick 09-07-2009 01:23 PM

I don't hate it.

McGraw at safety isn't that bad. He'll make up for his lack of athleticism with intelligence, instincts, and hard work. I'd rather have an overachiever like McGraw than an underachiever like DJ.

DJ deserves to be 3rd string. He hasn't done jack shit all pre-season. He was invisible against ****ing BACKUPS.

I like Charles, but I like Battle at 2nd string, too. Battle runs hard. He runs like LJ used to run. I like the idea of hammering away at the defense with big RB's. We need to be more physical.

I don't see what they see in Gilberry. I just don't.

the problem is that you have to be athletic to be a safety in the NFL

He is athletic. You don't have a career in the NFL if you're not.

riskrevival 09-07-2009 01:32 PM

if the Raven's WR's burn us week one because McGraw looks ****ing clueless out there you know it's going to be a long season
