Haley Excited Over Wade Addition

http://kan.scout.com/2/899773.html

<table><tbody><tr><td valign="top">Since head coach Todd Haley arrived in Kansas City, no position has received more attention than wide receiver. Before the draft, the Chiefs inked veteran receivers Bobby Engram and Terrance Copper. In the draft, they were relatively inactive, selecting only Quentin Lawrence in the sixth round. Then it all exploded, as the Chiefs signed veterans Ashley Lelie and Amani Toomer.
</td></tr> <tr> <td colspan="3">
The Chiefs have moved and shuffled receivers around like magnets on a blackboard. Haley even tinkered with the receiver depth chart, periodically moving Dwayne Bowe, a 1,000-plus-yard receiver a year ago, to the third team. Forget the coaching carousel, KC’s receiving carousel looks more like Cyclone Sam, the once-beloved Worlds of Fun ride, and the ride’s not over.

Tuesday, the Chiefs announced what we all knew over the weekend, the signing of Bobby Wade. Wednesday, they announced the release of Rodney Wright, a training camp favorite, and the signing of former Cardinals’ receiver Lance Long. Wade is a seven-year veteran who spent time in Minnesota, Tennessee and Chicago.

Unlike some of the other receivers Haley brought in this offseason, he seems visibly excited about Wade.

“I think we’ve got to get him quickly into the mix,” said Haley. “Bobby is a guy that I have some background with. He’s got some punt return ability. He hasn’t done it in a while, but he’s done it, and done it at a high level at times, so we’ve got to get him going quick.”

While Haley will probably give Wade a good, long look as a returner, he’s also expecting him to contribute on offense.

“If we are going to use him as a punt returner, he needs to be able to play some other plays, because five or six plays, or whatever it is, at the end of the day isn’t enough,” said Haley. “He was in here late last night working hard and early this morning, so we just got to get him up to speed fast.”

Wade knows Haley is looking for him to contribute immediately, so how can he make that happen?

“It’s just going to be determined on my learning curve,” said Wade. “Obviously, I’m going to put as much time as possible into trying to learn. I’m going to give the best opportunity to get on the field as early as possible. Other than that, it’s just about making plays once I get in.”

Wade is coming from an offensive scheme in Minnesota that centered on the running ability of Adrian Peterson. In Kansas City, a former wide receivers coach is in charge, and that’s something he’s excited about.

“It’s much different,” said Wade. “This is a really dynamic offense. This offense allows you to do a lot of different things. A lot of players are interchangeable.”

The Chiefs were not the only team vying for Wade’s services. It’s been rumored that up to four other clubs were interested, so why did he pick Kansas City?

“I wanted to be a part of a program that’s about growing,” said Wade. “I want to be a part of a program that’s excelling, that’s not having a possibility of moving backwards, but only having a possibility of moving forwards.”

“I wanted to play with a quarterback that going to be here for a while. Matt Cassel is a proven quarterback in this league. This is his opportunity to really shine. I want to be a part of that. I want to be a part of this locker room, this team, and hopefully a part of this city, if everything works out.”

Wade was complimentary towards Haley, who coached him in Chicago for a year.

“I had the opportunity to be drafted, he drafted me there to Chicago,” said Wade. “I had the opportunity (for him) to groom me into a player that allowed me to excel and have an opportunity to be productive in this league, so I’m grateful for what I’ve learned my rookie year. It’s really carried me a long way the past six years.”

CASSEL REPORT

Matt Cassel practiced with a brace Wednesday, but did not fully participate. The media is only allowed to watch 20 minutes of practice each day, and all last week, the quarterbacks did the same simple passing drills. However, this week, the quarterbacks ran a mobility drill where they had to shuffle between bags before throwing. Were the Chiefs putting Cassel’s mobility on display intentionally? During his Tuesday press conference, Haley said the media might notice improvement from Cassel.

media is only allowed 20 minutes? ROFL

The shit media in KC has to be furious over this... Not like they are worth a shit anyways!

That was pretty standard under Carl, too, if I remember.

RedThat 09-16-2009 04:18 PM

This is totally a signing that is purposely meant to fulfill a role.

They're going to give Bobby Wade every opportunity at returning kicks and punts and to play as a slot receiver. Like the signing. I think Wade can contribute, and imo represents an example of how the Chiefs are slowly shaping and rebuilding their roster.

Did he or did he not fully participate?

Bob Gretz said he did, and the rest of the story here seems to indicate that he did.

I think someone scewed up.

Slowly, seems like there is a guy coming/going everday. Not that I'm complaining, I like it. Aggressive change a lot different that what we're use to.

They should be signing O-lineman NOT WR's. For the love of god, that line absolutely sucks. Beyond funny anymore, and Cassel should be the first one offering dinner to em.

Me too. Aggressive is the way to do it. We were so used to seeing how we held on to players with big contracts and the comfort kicked in with those players. Maybe this was the result as why those kind of players didn't perform well?

I like this approach better, at least were looking for guys who may be hungry enough to show that they want a job and more importantly, get a feel for those kind of players to see what they could do for your team.

Okay, genius. Besides Runyan, tell us one OL out there we should sign. I'm listening....

BigChiefFan 09-16-2009 04:41 PM

Bobby Wade definitely has a good, positive attitude. I'm glad he's in the mix. He's going to shit when he gets to run out of the tunnel on opening day. What a hoot. I'm happy for him and our team for attempting to get better. Let's hope he pans out and helps makes some plays for the CHIEFS.

keg in kc 09-16-2009 04:43 PM

Maybe they can make some o-linemen magically appear out of the ether.

You do realize they've brought in 3 Offensive Linemen recently, yes?

Hell yeah......keep bringin' em in. The more the merrier. From what I saw sunday, 30 or 40 cast-offs would be better than these stiffs. WR is the least of our worries

If only they could have tried to bring in a former starter to help on the right side...

Saleenman607 09-16-2009 04:53 PM

For me, it starts with the O-line/D-line. Croyle had ZERO time for even a single check down without having to worry about health issues. Haley needs to concentrate on O-linemen and forget (right now anyway) WR's. No QB's = no wins

Who'd you have in mind?

Runyan's available and Philadelphia has said they will likely not sign him.

RedThat 09-16-2009 05:01 PM

Can some of us at least give some praise for the Chiefs efforts in trying to improve the offensive line, rather then discredit them for not trying. Hey, its not like they aren't aware it is an area of weakness. This whole they didn't improve the offensive line thing or not trying is getting ridiculous.

Micjones 09-16-2009 05:03 PM

They've certainly tried to upgrade the line since the pre-season began.
Is it enough? Not sure as of yet. Certainly didn't look that way Sunday, but you have to give them credit.
They've made the effort.

The problem is, they didn't do enough to address the O-Line during the offseason.

They made a serious error in judgement thinking they could work with the garbage that was here.

You know........as many cat's that they feel comfortable bringing in, Runyan incl. I just feel all this WR fitting is going the wrong way. After the game, I was disgusted with o-line performance, and wondered if Haley is seeing the same shit we are all seeing. It doesn't appear as they're not trying. They're just not good. (IMO)
Skip the wide-out tryouts and get some freakin' lineman

Agreed. I think getting a late start though with the new regime might've contributed to that situation though. I think they wanted to see what they had first.

I think they can do both honestly. We haven't seen O'Callaghan yet so all is not lost at the RT spot.
Slide Ndukwe over one slot and show us the new guy.

So, you want Pioli/Haley to have tunnel vision, looking ONLY for OL and nothing else, ignoring any potential upgrades at other positions until the OL is addressed? Good plan...

Of course not, foolio. I never said that. Just stop the revolving door for WR's. OK, Haleys great with wide out's......we get it already.

Hard not to get excited about Bobby Wade. We are talking about BOBBY. EFFING. WADE. This is a guy that we know for a fact was on another team's opening day roster THIS YEAR.

I expect to receive an invoice for playoff tickets any day now.

I'm (like most everyone here) elated that Hermie and the clowns are history, so that in & of itself is a step forward.
A poster (Milkman?) mentioned the outright stupidity of spending so much on Cassel and left the line alone. I don't know if they thought it was worth rehabbing or what, but again, IMHO, this line is devoid of talent.

i can agree here (well if your post was pointed at me) but the revovling door for WRs IMO has nothing to do with the activity, or lack of, at the OL position. just speaks to what is out there

Understood......and my premise is....you could have Jerry Rice, Otis Taylor and Frank Pitts on the line and all they would be doing is helping the QB up of the ground. I just feel more attention needs to be paid to O-line at all costs.

You can build a competent offensive line without using a bunch of high draft picks, most good teams have done it that way.

The offensive line, outside of left tackle, is one of those areas where hard work, mental toughness, and technique are far more valuable than raw talent.

I'm glad to have Wade, but our WRs weren't bad last week. Bradley was actually quite good. Bowe could've been better, but he wasn't out there dropping a bunch of balls either.

I don't mind the signing, unless it somehow prevents us from getting a viable O-line option.

Bradley made a couple of fairly costly mental errors, but I'm guessing he won't make them again any time soon...

And signing Wade isn't going to affect our ability to acquire o-linemen in the slightest.

Oh, I agree, which is why I said I'm fine with the signing.

I can't come up with any reason why it would stop us from upgrading the O-line, so I give the acquisition a 'meh' rating. That's a hell of a lot better than "Dammit Scott!"

Hammock Parties 09-16-2009 09:30 PM

Wade at the very least is going to be a good fourth receiver. I think he's way better than Copper or Lawrence. And if Engram gets hurt, Wade slips into that slot receiver role quite well. Hell, Wade might end up being an upgrade over Engram.

As "bad" as our receivers are, none of them dropped a pass Sunday. Pretty encouraging.

Damn straight, Boog. We're in a pass-heavy era of the NFL right now, and pass blocking Linemen don't grow on trees.
And we're at the bottom of the ****ing barrel to top it all off. What little premier, signable talent that may exist has been snatched already or doesn't want to come here.

Bradley was a bonehead...TWICE, but that 50 yard bomb was a hell of a pass and catch in tight coverage.

Bowe was drawing ALL the coverage, so I'm not as concerned.

Also, it should be noted that even though no one likes him Engram came up with a huge 3rd down catch.

Uh huh.

If we took a highly talented guard or center in the 2nd round and signed a tackle in free agency that would be huge. That's ONE pick spent on the offensive line. That leaves some draft picks left to address the OTHER 7,000 vacuums of talent on this roster.

Drafting nothing but offensive linemen with our middle picks will not make us a significantly better team next season.
