Making first trip to Arrowhead this weekend. what to expect?

My dad and I are driving 8 hours away from Indiana to see out first Chiefs home game. Been to a few Indy and Cincy, Chiefs games.
Besides the game, looking forward to some KC bbq! Do they sell bbq in the parking lot anywhere, or do you guys just bring your own?
Seeing how we don't know anyone, was hoping they would have stands setup or something. Not really sure what to expect at the tailgating.

tk13 09-17-2009 01:00 AM

Get there early.

QuikSsurfer 09-17-2009 01:02 AM

Congrats.
Plenty of tailgating and you may could give someone a beer for a rib.
Parking will be horrid, if its anything like last year.
Do yourself a favor and park by Denny's (not IN Denny's).

Try not to think of the long, hard walk to your car after the defeat.

Hootie 09-17-2009 01:47 AM

a loss

JuicesFlowing 09-17-2009 02:14 AM

Expect to see about 20 fights in the stadium amongst Chiefs-Raiders fans.

No BBQ sold in the parking lot. Nothing sold in the lots. People bring their own food. But, every BBQ place in KC is open on sunday morning so you can get some and take it to your own tailgate. Where you staying? I'd invite you to mine, except I'm not going to the game.

Get there early. No matter how much we suck, the parking lot is always fun. Just walk around and meander through the lots.

I think the pre-game chit is lame but a lot of first timers like it so be in the stadium 1/2 before game time if you want to check it out. Too bad you couldn't have come to your first game when Arrowhead rocked, it's just not the same anymore. But, you'll have fun.

Demonpenz 09-17-2009 08:10 AM

expect it to be loud and rowdy, arrowhead will be rocking!

Rooster 09-17-2009 08:15 AM

Find me and I will buy you a beer. I will be the guy in red with the goatee.

soundmind 09-17-2009 09:20 AM

If they put stands in the parking lot, no one would buy it. We all do it ourselves, at a fraction of the cost, and 20x the quality of what's available inside.

However, that been said. I suggest going to Hi-Boy before the game, just grab a burger and some rings, proceed to the parking lots, get drunk, meet some other drunk people with a ton of food, take in the smells and the Faider Hatred, and after the game hit a BBQ joint if you want. Just don't drive back to Indiana drunk.

Not gonna happen. Yes we are bad, but we are not bad enough to lose to the worst team in the NFL.

Just want to clarify that this says by Dennys not in Dennys parking lot. The owner there won't think twice about towing your car.

May I also suggest creating a sign that says "Jamarcus Likes Boys", "Jamarcus, FREE TWINKIES!!!" or a nice "Ruck the Faiders"........"Jamarcus Swallows" is also acceptable.

CoMoChief 09-17-2009 09:43 AM

What to expect.

A blinding video ring.

Half empty stadium

Chiefs D to get pushed around

Another Raider win inside Arrowhead.

Enjoy your trip!

It's the Raiders and the home opener, do you seriously think the place is going to be half-empty?

3 days before the game, and you can get TWENTY SEATS TOGETHER in the ELEVENTH ROW of the upper deck.

It was just a few years ago you couldn't get a single on Ticketmaster after the Johnson County pre-sale.

smittysbar 09-17-2009 10:24 AM

I would suggest trying to hook up with a few people off of here, maybe they will be kind enough to let you join them.

Wow, maybe so then.....are we dancing with a blackout on the home-opener???

soundmind 09-17-2009 10:28 AM

In the event of blackout, I may go, just so I can watch the damn game.....if so, you guys can hook up with me and mine.

Someone from CP should step up and invite you to thier tailgate party. I would, but I'm not going to many games this year... Been selling my season tickets off game by game since Herm became coach.

Like someone else said, don't judge Arrowhead/Tail-gating experience/Crowdnoise based off of what you see THIS year. Arrowhead is NOT the same as it used to be! When the team gets back to winning... the traditional "Louded Stadium in the NFL" and best tail-gating scene in the world will come back.

Well I sold the bar to my brother, but he got the NFL package, but has not received his Sunday Lic. yet. Everyone came over to my house last week. I am going to a party in Wisconsin this weekend, not sure what time I will be getting back.

We all need to get a trip planned to go to Arrowhead.

You getting Matt into FB more this year?

wheeler08 09-17-2009 10:47 AM

Thanks for all that info! Win or lose I'm sure we will have a blast. It will be nice going to a game and not being maybe one of the 50 people wearing red. Cincy was the worst crowd.

Thanks for the tips, wrote them down.

Chiefs Express and Royals Express Discontinued

As a result of decreasing sales tax revenues, the Kansas City Area Transportation Authority is facing a multi-million budget shortfall for 2009-2010. Accordingly, The Metro will not offer Chiefs Express or Royals Express in 2009, as announced in February. Reductions throughout the Metro service area have been implemented in order to deal with the budget crisis.
We regret the inconvenience this may cause our loyal Chiefs Express customers, but the current economic conditions leave little choice.

I haven't been to arrowhead since the 90s. Even if it's not the same I can't wait to get there on Sunday. It's going to be a blast.

BigChiefFan 09-17-2009 01:27 PM

The game is considered a sell-out capacity crowd and it's brand new renovations, so nobody knows what to expect. I predict the place will be electric on Sunday.

Who exactly is considering it a sellout, since you can still buy 20 tickets together in the lower quarter of the upper deck? :spock:

I'd like to think people would show up to support the dramatic changes, and it's opening day at Arrowhead, and there are renovations, etc.... there are reasons to go, but watching a game against two of the worst teams in the league for $100+/person to just park and get in the stadium isn't one of them.

For those going, I certainly hope it's a better show/atmosphere than what I'm thinking it'll be, but I think I'll save $100+ and 90 minutes of commercials, and turn on the DVR around halftime.

...not to piss on anyone's Cheerios or anything...... :(

Blick 09-17-2009 01:42 PM

The crowds were pretty decent for the pre-season games. I expect the stadium to be almost full on Sunday.

Misplaced_Chiefs_Fan 09-17-2009 01:45 PM

I've seen the Chiefs play at Ravens Stadium, Fed-Ex Field, Bengals Stadium but nothing beats seeing the Chiefs play at Arrowhead.

Forget the nay-sayers. As an out-of-towner, there is no experience like seeing the Chiefs at home. Kick back, enjoy the game, scream your head off (while the defense is on the field, please) and root the home team to victory.

Maybe people are spoiled living in KC, but I'd have season tickets if I lived anywhere near KC. Getting to see the Chiefs live once every three or four years stinks. Nothing beats actually attending the games.

'Hamas' Jenkins 09-17-2009 01:46 PM

Two years ago when we were 4-3, I got two LL sets to sell for 500+ dollars for the Packer game. This year, I got 1600 for 2200 worth of STs.

I think we're spoiled by the 90s (and 2003). I've been to a few home openers, including the first game after DT died, as well as the 2003 playoff game against the Colts... and it's a lot different now. I went to the Broncos game a couple of years ago and a couple games last year, and it's just not worth the money, IMO... especially since prices and success have gone in opposite directions.

People say you have to go to NHL or NBA games, but I say the same thing about the NFL.... I'd much rather see a football game from the first few rows of the upper deck and see everything, than see it in such a narrow view on tv. Yet, I find myself spending $50/week to see college football games live... eh.

Blick 09-17-2009 02:02 PM

I've had season tickets since '93 and I still love going to Arrowhead...even though it has changed. I still get goosebumps when the crowd yells CHIEEEEEEEEEFS at the end of the national anthem.

SenselessChiefsFan 09-17-2009 03:01 PM

about 20K less fans than there used to be.

I will be there myself.... very much looking forward to the trip.

Halfcan 09-17-2009 03:07 PM

They are't getting blacked out for what that's worth, so while they may not be sold out, they will be close it looks like.

Don't let any Raider fans put any body paint on you. It's laced with LSD or some such shit. It might not absorb into your system until the drive back home.

Don't worry about the details, make it your own experience and enjoy yourself. Yes, eat great food, eat barbeque, whatever you decide. Drink in the parking lot at 9 AM, get a good buzz. Watch people, enjoy the atmosphere. Walk around, feel the vibe. Get into the stadium early, find your seat. Find the nearest restroom. Buy an $8 beer, or 4. Check out the souvenir stands and food/beer stand. Just soak it in, go watch pre-game warm-ups. Take a camera. Just live it. It's Arrowhead. I'm pretty sure that if you're in the parking lot by 9:30 you'll be able to smell the air ... I'm also sure you may see a few Raiders fans being harassed ... You'll be fine.

I will say I love our city and the people are awesome. The people during tail gating and pregame are awesome, but if we get our asses beat the nice KC folks turn bat shit crazy. If the game is out of hand, head to the parking lot and bring a lawn chair. There will plenty of fights especially if a Raider's fan starts popping off.

Raider's fans getting lippy at Arrowhead=Epic FAIL

We are staying in at a Super 8 in Independence. I seen there was a wal-mart close by. Dad wants a new red shirt for game day, his is others are faded. Wal-mart a decent place to go for Chiefs shirts in KC?
I figured since all we can get is Colts shit in southern IN, then yours would have Chiefs stuff.
