Ben Davidson Late Hit

Does anyone have a video of Ben Davidson's late hit on Len Dawson? This is the catalyst of Raider hate for me and optimizes the philosophy of the Dirty, Filthy, Stinking, Raiders. I hate those guys. You youngsters who have a problem with the Broncos (I hate the Broncos too.) should watch some of the AFL Games. What a bunch of thugs the Raiders were.

Frazod 09-18-2009 09:10 AM

Yeah, but he was great in Conan.

The essence of any good rivalry is competition. For many of the youngsters, and even some of us that can remember the 80's, the Raiders haven't been any good.

When you win 18 out 20 or whatever it was from 89 to 98, the rivalry loses ALOT of it's energy.

Norman Einstein 09-18-2009 09:23 AM

In the old stadium in Oakland the visiting team was exceptionally close to the stands. There have been stories of the players having urine poured on them from the fans.

The rivalry is not just on the field, it extends into the stands. Both KC and Oak have been shown in a very poor light when it comes to fan interfaces with the opposing fans, both stadiums and during every game.

Beating the Raiders is a salve that eases the pain of sucking and losing to them sours the taste of success.

1:05 into the vid is that hit.
I was 11 and jumped on my brother( a rader fan) who was 20 at the time. He was laughing and just flicked me away with a shoulder turn. I land on the couch and knock over a lamp and mom yells at me to keep it down.

Ralphie 09-18-2009 09:31 AM

yep. for us older fans, it's the raiders we hate. my son and all his friends hate the donkeys. hell, we never thought about the donkeys as we were usually beating them 59-7.
I was watching the OSU-Socal game Saturday and they brought back a bunch of the old OSU guys. and who do they pan in on? freakin' Jack Tatum. Tatum, Atkinson, Davidson,...
let me count the ways I hate the raiders.

You are correct.
Because amazing as this may sound al davis knew football back then and they were a formidable opponent. The younger fans only have seen the basically pathetic version of the raiders .

Mars72 09-18-2009 09:39 AM

Beautiful. That is what I was looking for. I don't care how pathetic we are. I don't care how pathetic the Stinking Raiders are. Beat them. Beat them into the ground. Send them back to that orifice of darkness, humiliated with their forked tails between their legs.

RJ 09-18-2009 09:48 AM

I still hate that sonofabitch. And that play wasn't even the dirtiest hit I ever saw from him.

OTIS!!

If Stroud's timing had been just a little better, he blocks that field goal.

Yeah, that's another thing I'm still pissed about.

buddha 09-18-2009 09:59 AM

The rivalry isn't a shadow of what it once was, but when you ask Oakland fans, they will tell you that they hate KC/Denver about equally, and the Chargers next after that.

For KC, we have always considered Oakland to be our primary rival going back to the beginning of time. The older fans remember the street brawls these games used to be...nothing else quite like them. You were lucky to get off the field with your head back in the day.

I think the bad feelings are still there, but it's been a LONG time since both teams were legit and competitive at the same time. It's fine to hate each other, but if the product on the field sucks so badly, it really doesn't matter.

buddha 09-18-2009 10:00 AM

Damn George Blanda would always kick those ugly ass FGs from 50 yards to beat us in the last moments of games. And he'd do it at age 40!

I had as much hate for the Raiders as ever, until Herm. Herm just took a lot of the enthusiasm out.

Now this week, I caught myself being upset they got screwed on the TD overturn.

Before, I would have been thrilled, dreamed about them getting screwed.
I hated them so bad, I walked out of a bar once because the bartender had a Raiders hat on.

RJ 09-18-2009 10:12 AM

My daughter is only 6, but she is already highly skilled at Raider hatred. She always has an eye peeled for Raider bumper stickers, apparel, etc. and is quick to alert me when she spots it. She even advises me against parking next to Raider adorned vehicles and makes a point of not getting too close to people wearing their gear.

Later, I will teach her that there are some decent raider fans in this world, perhaps as many as a dozen. In the meantime, an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.

wild1 09-18-2009 11:32 AM

I would give the Broncos a hate rating of 100, the Raiders of 90 (mostly due to their ineptitude), and San Diego of... well. Zero. I don't hate the Chargers. I don't ever think about them. The Chargers are irrelevant.

Norman Einstein 09-18-2009 11:36 AM

I thinkt he age of a person and the number of years they have been a fan of the Chiefs has a great impact on what team they dislike the most. Anyone here that was around when the Chiefs and Raiders were in their heyday have a well defined hatred of the Raiders.

The younger guys were brought up on the Denver wars and thus hate the broncos more than the Raiders.

Even younger you have the guys that witnessed the nimrod (ferryman) from San Diego ending the career of Priest Holmes.

There is enough to go around in the division, but I'll stick with the Raiders for my most disliked foe.

buddha 09-18-2009 11:44 AM

What is there to hate San Diego about? I can't think of one significant cheap shot in that series, or anything that ignited hard feelings. San Diego is Switzerland...you most likely don't feel anything toward them, and for good reason.

The Donkeys are closer to the Raiders, but that's an age thing. The younger guys will hate Denver more than the older guys. I promise you that you can't find a Chiefs fan who is older than about 46 who doesn't hate the Raiders more than any other team in the NFL. It was THAT bad back then.

I'm 50 and that is certainly true of me. My little girl will ask me "Daddy, why do you hate the Raiders so much?" and I tell her, "Because I always have. I've hated the Raiders for about as long as I've loved the Chiefs".

RJ's hate meter:

Raiders - Why doesn't it go to 11?

Broncos - 97%

Cowboys - 95%

Steelers - 90%, but with grudging admiration.

cdcox 09-18-2009 12:18 PM

My memory of that play is that there was a long delay after the fight was over, during which the officials were trying to decide where the ball should be placed. Dawson's run gave the Chiefs a first down and virtually iced the game, even before the penalty was enforced. You'll notice on the next play in the video, the ball was marked back near the 50. But I do not think that was the initial positioning of the ball by the officials. My memory is that Madden threatened to and actually began to remove his players from the field in protest. Finally, the ball was placed back at the 50 and history unfolded. My questions:

1. Does anyone else remember these details the way I do, as far as the controversy of where the ball should be placed?

2. If both Davidson and Taylor were penalized for offsetting dead-ball fouls, where should the ball be placed? I contend it should be where Dawson went down, because the off setting penalties were dead ball, after the play had ended.

3. If the placement of the ball back near the 50 is correct, why would NFL players not routinely commit dead ball fouls whenever a game changing play occurred in hopes of retaliation by the other team and the requirement to re-run the play?

4. Not a question, but an opinion. I still blame Otis Taylor a little bit for that tie game, since if he had kept his cool, we would have won.

RJ 09-18-2009 12:27 PM

cd.....

1) Yes, I remember a very long delay, though I had forgotten about the placement of the ball.

2) I think you are correct.

3) That would be pretty risky. What if the other team doesn't retaliate? What if you get tossed from the game?

4) I don't think you can blame him. As much emotion as we felt as fans watching on television, can you even imagine what it was for the players on the field? Otis had probably been wanting to fight Davidson long before that play.

I guess I'm just a cold-hearted SOB. When Davidson first hit Dawson my initial reaction wasn't concern over Dawson or anger against Davidson, instead it was "YES! Half the distance to the goal!"

I qualify as older and it was always finish ahead of oakland and you will win the division back then. I always rooted for what was best for the chiefs and back then it was better for the chiefs if denver or sd beat oakland because denver and sd were rarely in the hunt.
During the years denver was the main rival you usually would root for a 4-12 type raider team to beat denver because you had to beat out denver for the division. But I still say that's almost the ultimate insult to raiders though. Kind of like "go ahead and win we are not worried about passing you in the standings".

I also wonder about the sd indifference among chiefs fans. Is that more of an insult to charger fans that our blood boils when playing denver or oakland and sd just doesn't evoke the hate from chiefs. Is indifference worse than hate?

HotRoute 09-18-2009 01:03 PM

i think this hatred is re-fueled and im fired up for this weekend's game. could be our first win since Nov 30 2008, which was actually a 20-13 win in Oak.

i hope we T.Jackson takes out J.Russel on their opening drive, so then they'll feel stupid for granting J.Garcia's release. oh how i'd love to see B.Gradkowski struggle with the noise in arrowhead.

That is if the seats arent empty. last two games i've gone to ppl either dont show up or leave at halftime which was understandable last year. But we need Arrowhead back to the good ol' days were you couldnt even hear the person next to you screaming in your ear how awsome the chiefs crowd is.

HotRoute 09-18-2009 01:11 PM

i hate all AFC west teams but the team i hate the most has got to be the Chargers, no doubt about it.

3 ppl i cant stand on their team, P.Rivers how mouthy can a guy like him be? I bet he never shuts up and LT i like how everyone says how great he is and all but really he's kind of a p*ssy when was the last playoff game he actually played all the way threw?

And the worst of them all, the man they call "Lights Out" Merriman, god if the hair and steroids wasnt enough look at the pics of Tila Tequilla after he beat the sh*t out of her. What goes around comes around, and that guy has it comin to him

I agree. with the Chargers statement. It is like when Seattle was in the AFC West. So what. There was no rivalry there. They are not missed.

However, a Charger friend of mine hates the Chiefs. It may have something to to with a friend of his that slept with his wife. He was a Chiefs fan. My buddy bought him a DT jersey. Later caught him in the sack with his Mrs.

The Chiefs-Raiders rivalry is still the one, IMO. The Chiefs could go 2-14 and as long as it was a sweep of the Raiders it would be a good season.

Most remembered game: Sep 28, 1992 - Chiefs beat the Raiders 27-7 on Monday night. One of my sons was born during the game - the doctor and I watched while the wife was in labor, she was watching as well but seemed distracted :).

Buck 09-18-2009 06:26 PM

The lack of hatred is mutual between the Chargers and Chiefs fans.

All my friends don't hate the Chiefs at all, mostly because they haven't been in the spotlight recently.

One of my roommates wasn't even aware the Chiefs made the playoffs in 2003 or 2006. He didn't even believe me when I told him, lol. Unfortunately the Chiefs will never get national attention, but I used to think the same thing about the Chargers, and they have now.

On to what I would say is the general consensus for Chargers fans in terms of hating teams.

1. Broncos
2. Raiders
3. Patriots
4. Steelers

I don't really care about the Patriots or Steelers too much, and I would rank the teams like this for me personally.

1. Broncos
2. Raiders / Chiefs (tie)
3. Giants

Probably because other than you guys in 2005 and 2006, they've been our stiffest competition lately.

Hope this works.

I've talked about this before, but the hatred between the Chiefs/Raiders went beyond the teams on the field and the fans.

It started at the very top with Lamar Hunt and A L Davis.

When the AFL was battling the NFL for players and attention prior to the merger, Davis was named commissioner because of his combative personality.

The AFL owners wanted someone who would take the lead in the battle, and no one was more fiery and outspoken than Al.

However, Hunt still had the dream of being a part of the NFL, and he and a couple of the other owners were quietly working behind the scenes negotiating the merger.

Davis was pissed when he learned of the negotiations, and did his best to undermine those efforts.

Hunt hated Al for that, and Al hated Hunt for what he percieved as backstabbing by Hunt.

They never resolved their differences.

Sorry man, just ribbing you.

There is a long list of reasons why Charger fan should hate the Broncos. Blatant knee shots, their fans being so smug over the Bronculi call, that stupid chant after a NON-completion occurs.

Just wear the hat...at a stupid as sideways angle. Half of those jackasses can't name a single player on the team.

Just spin baby.

Jeez, I thought the Chargers' fans were holdin' an old grudge with the Hochuli non-sense from last year. You still sweatin' that 1960's DAVIDSON hit? Damn, I thought the RaiDUH fans were the only ones grabbing for the DeLorean, and tellin' Michael J. Fox to head Back To The Future, when their team was decent....you got THEIR act beat....<grin>

Boon 09-19-2009 11:21 AM

Their fans do dress up for Halloween real nice.
That's once a year.
Other than that, they suck.
They really do.

It would be even better to see the reaction of Otis Taylor in going after Davidson after that cheap shot.

LMAO Davis sold the pirate image. I could list several players on the Chiefs and other teams that were just a ruthless. Back then the Raiders were always good and Davis push the swagger tough guy image. I am an old school fan and can not relate to many of the younger fans. The move to LA changed the fan base. I get a chuckle out of the Halloween custom bullshit....uh look at the fans across the NFL. Heck check out a KC game there are several fans dressed up.
