So I have this new business idea and need some feedback
 

As some of you may know I used to own a mobile DJ business back in the early 90's and gave it up when I started my ad business.Anyhow,I'm thinking since i now have over 7000 songs on my puter and needing a little extra income I may get back into it.

Here's my question though,I have a shitload of 60's-80's music and am thinking about a new DJ business i would call RETRO JOE'S,I would specialize in older birthday parties,high school reunions and the like and would have a slogan something like No Hip,NO Hop,Just Classic Rock-N-Pop


What do you honestly think?

This will be also serve as a repository for some of that classic rock-n-pop like this

It's an interesting idea. I guess the problem I'd see with it is just that the market for it would be pretty small. There are billion HS dances/parties/etc., but there are only going to be a handful of people who would be looking for a DJ in that target market. As long as you don't have to put in a lot of work for it otherwise, you might as well give it a go. But if you have to buy a bunch of equipment, I'd be wary until you quantify the true market for it.

That said, I'm 27, so I may not be an expert on that market.

I guess the big question is, what would it cost you to find out? How much would it cost you to give it a go?

I doubt the market is there too but if you don't spend money it won't hurt to try.

Exactly,I want a smaller market,I'd be a specialty DJ,therefore I'd get a little more by the hour but those looking for that era 1 hit wonders and the like would be getting a whole lot more and not some (excuse me if I sound rude) some young dipshit who is constantly telling his older crowd,"sorry I don't have that."

And I DON'T want to work every weekend,been there done that,but when I have parties here with older crowds I'm always getting,"holy shit I forgot all about that song!"

Add in free drinks to my hourly fee and bam instant party :D

And for those that want to boogie like they did in the 70's I even got some classic 1-2 hit funksters that are never heard from anymore....

I would be the best party DJ in the history of the known universe. For the 12 people in the known universe that share my eclectic taste in music, that is. Everyone else is going to be alienated by portions of what I'd play.

Unfortunately there's only a handful of us that appreciate the true greatness of a band like Porcupine Tree

I think the big question is what will it cost for equipment? The first thing I would do is price the competition. Say you're old ass ( :) ) is throwing a birthday party and you want to rawk to REAL music. Get some quotes, feel them out for what a customer can/cannot get with them. If you can pay off the equipment in a relative few appearances, it would be worth a shot. But see what you can get from the competition and make sure you're better.

Interesting idea.

My brother-in-law use to be in this business for years. Me and the wife use to help him at all his various events it can be pretty fun. I even thought about doing it awhile back myself, but after some research into it I decided against it. Mainly, because of the start up costs to do it legally I wasn't interested.

The biggest question I have for you is....How did you obtain all the songs that are on your computer?

If you paid for them fine, if you didn't, you might want to think twice about charging people to listen to music that you dowloaded and didn't pay for yourself.

All paid for legally and the start up is well within my budget,plus i have one thing going for me in that a lot of folks know me as Jammin' Joe from my high school days and prior DJ business and know with me they're going to get the best in show and tunes.

Hey man, I like this idea. Certainly several people do NOT like rap and they'll be your bread and butter. Targeting here seems critical. I'd recommend immediately brainstorming ideas for a medium and as to 'how' to hit 'em up and expose your nitch. I know you do this anyway in your current gig, but, Just reminding you (I guess) ... and honestly I haven't read too much of the feedback in this thread. But, yeah. basically, no overhead.
