Versus on DIRECTV

Unfortunately, Versus is no longer available on DIRECTV. Comcast, the largest cable company in the U.S. and our largest competitor, owns the channel and has forced us to pull it down. Here is the situation.
DIRECTV was already paying Comcast more than any other non-Comcast distributor to air Versus — and now Comcast is demanding an overall rate hike of 20% on top of that. Comcast also forces DIRECTV to make Versus available to a much larger portion of our customer base at our own expense than they require from other TV providers — most notably, DISH Network. We simply cannot accept these unfair and outrageous terms. All we're asking from Comcast is equal treatment.
Comcast and Versus are currently engaged in a noisy publicity campaign to distract attention from the fact that they are trying to take advantage of DIRECTV and our customers. The bottom line is this, if we were to accept their unreasonable demands, we would have no choice but to pass on the increase in cost to our valued customers. We do not want this to happen, especially in these difficult economic times. That's why we're standing firm in our negotiations with Comcast.
Regardless, we will continue to work in good faith with Comcast to try to reach a fair and just settlement. Our commitment to deliver the best TV service for the best price is and has always been our first priority. We truly appreciate your patience and understanding during this time.

DIRECTV still leads the industry in sports programming, whether or not we have Versus in our channel lineup. For college football, NHL hockey and other sports, here's just a brief list of what's available on DIRECTV:
•College football: Available on Big Ten Network, CBS College Sports, ESPN, ESPNU, ESPN GamePlan, The Mtn., local channels and your RSN.
•NHL: Available on NHL Network, NHL Center Ice, and your RSN.
•Mixed Martial Arts: Available on HDNet, Spike TV, and UFC on DIRECTV Pay Per View.
•Auto Racing: IRL available on ABC, Formula 1 on Fox and Speed.
•Bull riding: Available on ESPN2 and the Houston Rodeo on DIRECTV Pay Per View
Hunting and fishing: Available on ESPN2, The Sportsman Channel, The Outdoor Channel, and Pursuit TV. If you have any questions or concerns, please contact us at [email protected]

I don't believe I've ever tuned into Versus, so I won't miss it in the future.

You must have had bad installs with the satellite dishes. Even when I had DirecTV in the 90s my signal rarely went out. I switched to cable in '06 and it was pricey compared to DTV so I switched back. I've noticed the signal strength for the dish in my location is consistently in the low/mid 90s. It used to be mid/high 80s. They've apparently boosted the signal.

Can understand, the savings, economy, etc... Heck, I couldnt imgane a sunday without NFL ticket. Nothing like before forced Tampa Bay/NYJets game when KC is tied with SD in the division and playing Denver at Denver.

My family that lives in KC burns up the slingbox during the season... Nothing is more stupid that cable companies and the games they force on people...

My 20mb down and 2 mb up is amazing, especially when I am out on the road using the slingbox to watch KU. Love it.

But unless Cable gets the Sunday Ticket, Sports Tier and Full Court. There inst much use for them other than internet at this time.

IF they get those, I would switch.

I've had Directv since '95 and lost signal 6-7 times. Everytime I fixed it in 30 seconds by brushing packed snow off the dish. One other time, I had to re-adjust it after the lawn guy decided to mow at night and hit the dish with his fat head.

Yeah, you out of market guys are kinda hosed. And believe me, I'd LOVE to have Sunday Ticket again, but there's no way in hell it's worth dealing with Directv to have it. Hopefully the internet streaming will eventually break the stranglehold they have on the broadcast rights.

The best thing to do at this point is find someone with DTV that doesn't use the online portion of their Sunday Ticket. I paid $100 to a CP member and stream the games through Supercast right into my big screen. So far, so awesome.

They're not myths. I have had a dish and bad weather killed it. Right now, I have the worst of both worlds. I live in an apartment complex that gives us cable but they get their signal through a dish... so when it's bad weather it cuts out, and when it's nice out I still have poor channel selection... i love the interweb and streaming though...

Had DirecTV for 12 years now, don't understand how any NFL fan can do without. Big 10 network rocks. Have never lost reception once. Cable TV seems to constantly be trying to come up with gimmicks to cover for the fact they can't offer full NFL coverage.

Versus vs. DirecTV: two sides to the story

Posted on 03 September 2009 by Robert Seidman

Versus is still dark on DirecTV, but more light is being shed in its skirmish with Comcast. Here’s a brief synopsis.

DirecTV initially said it was about price, that Comcast was seeking a 20% hike in licensing fees for Versus. Additionally DirecTV has said it is paying more for the service than other providers. But Comcast says that isn’t so and that the issue is that DirecTV wanted to move the package into some digital sports tier ghetto on DirecTV where Versus would’ve been available to six million fewer DirecTV subscribers.

Previously Versus was available to subscribers of the Total Choice Xtra package, where it was available to around 14 million on DirecTV who subscribe to that package at no additional cost. From DirecTV’s perspective, it is merely looking to get similar treatment as its satellite competitior DISH:
http://tvbythenumbers.com/2009/09/03...he-story/26125

Quote:

Multichannel News writes that DISH Network carries Versus in the "AT250 tier and has about a 35 percent penetration rate," and DirecTV has indicated it's looking for a similar deal. Before being taken off the air, Versus had access to about 80 percent of DirecTV's subscribers.

Is the DISH Network comparison a fair one? Keep in mind that Comcast struck that deal with DISH back in the OLN days; way before the name change, the increase in properties and ratings growth. Also keep in mind that Versus has clearance above 70 percent on nearly every major cable provider, from Time Warner to (naturally) Comcast.
http://sports.yahoo.com/nhl/blog/puc...urn=nhl,187145

I have no dog in this hunt but, in looking briefly into the matter, it seems that DirectTV is not an innocent party being abused in this situation.

I'm pretty sure $38 doesn't get you HDTV. In the future I will spend about $50/month for DTV 200+ channels and HD with an AT&T bundle. Right now I get all the channels on a special promotion through AT&T since I just went back to DTV.

Time Warner's "free HD" is complete bullshit. They were raising rates every time I turned around and I'd have to call to get a preferred rate which would only raise my rate $3 instead of $7. It was getting tiresome. There was this pesky "High Definition Tier" that added $5/month. How does that make HD free?

just unbiased propaganda from cable companies...

Not propaganda.

Currently a Dish Network customer, have had it for 1 year, had DirecTV from May 2005 til I switched to Dish. I've lost my signal less with Dish than I did Direct, but it does happen when it storms. A lot of it depends on signal strength and a clear view of the southern sky. I cut down a tree, that probably interfered with my signal, at the same time the Dish was installed so that might have something to do with the better reception.

Dish's customer service is way better than Direct, but the equipment isn't as good. I switched because I wanted a DVR and Dish with DVR was cheaper than Direct.

All I do know is that Mediacom (local cable company) sucks and I'll never go back.

You've miscalculated. The avg. lifespan of a U.S. male is 75.65yrs of age. which would mean 38yrs old is middle aged. I know for you seniors, numbers and times start to get real confusing and all, but that's no reason to fool yourself. You're clearly for in the prime age group that the market targets with 'active living' adverts and AARP newsletters. And that group isn't middle aged. :)

I scratch my head every time I see these threads.....

I have been with DirecTV since 1996....i don't have to take off my shoes and socks to count the number of times I've lost my signal. And when I did lose the signal, it was mostly when I didn't care to watch TV anyway like during the middle of a monsoon/tornado. Funny thing...last winter, when we had the nasty ice storms here in Kentucky, my satellite never went out.

And I still can figure out everyone complaining about DTV's customer service.....I get calls from them all the time about specials they would like to offer me...I especially like the deal I got on NFL Direct Ticket and the movie channels.

When I moved here, the DTV installer was here the day after I moved in and I was watching TV that morning. Even better, when I refinished the basement over the winter, the installer came out and moved a couple of connections that were already there and didn't even charge me.

In the end, the customer gets screwed (in the end).

I would love to have access to all channels and choose which ones I wish to receive. But that will never happen.

I agree with this... There is so much I "we" dont care to have, but yet pay for. I would rather just get the channels I prefer and let the tards have the rest of the garbage.

I want to win a championship just to piss off the "True Fans"!!!!

That would mean winning w/o a pro bowler!!

Cant be done without 10 good players each side.

I have Charter cable and Internet but I have decided to switch back to DTV but I am going to keep my Internet since it is pretty cheap for a 5mb connection.

I am pretty excited I will finally have a DVR. I am just hoping the HD feed is equal to what I have right now because it is pretty freaking good.
