To "www" or not to "www"...

When typing in a web site, do you typically include the www's these days? In other words, if I told you to go look at something on Yahoo, would you type in "www.yahoo.com" or "yahoo.com"?

bevischief 09-23-2009 01:33 PM

yahoo.com

Saulbadguy 09-23-2009 01:33 PM

I type in yahoo in the address bar, and then hit cntrl+enter. It automatically appends a WWW to the front and a .com to the end.

This.

Although some websites dont work when you include www.

Also, some dont work unless you include www.

Mr. Laz 09-23-2009 01:34 PM

i would click Google taskbar shortcut and type Y and then arrow down to the autocomplete for YAHOO.

:D

TinyEvel 09-23-2009 01:34 PM

Leave out the www.

as an advertiser, we always talk our clients into just saying the name.com. EVeryone knows that the wwws are implied.

The Franchise 09-23-2009 01:37 PM

I type in the www......it's habit.

That's what I do. Then you'll get yahoo.com, yahoomail.com, yahoosports.com, etc...

chefsos 09-23-2009 01:41 PM

I click "Favorites"

I'm not going out somewhere in middle of the Webs that I've not been to already. It's scary out there. Brrrr....

I find that I can find things faster on our University web page by googling them than by using the directory of the university web site.

Yep, I rarely ever have to type in an address because I got like 100 sites bookmarked. Thats what its there for.

When I type... my fingers just default to www.

Rain Man 09-23-2009 02:00 PM

I tried doing it without the w's in about 1995 and it didn't work. So I type them. You can't fool me twice.

Frazod 09-23-2009 02:02 PM

I thought you had to type in the "www." ****. :cuss:

keg in kc 09-23-2009 02:02 PM

I don't think I've ever typed www or http:// for an address.

chasedude 09-23-2009 02:02 PM

I still type the prefix, guess it's just out of habit.

BY1401 09-23-2009 02:02 PM

Same. I know it's not necessary (at least in most cases), but I'm so used to typing the "www." that I do it without thinking about it.

|Zach| 09-23-2009 02:44 PM

No reason for it.

Simply Red 09-23-2009 02:48 PM

I voted 'WTF mate' not really sure why.

Well, I certainly won't continue to do it. :grr:

Sofa King 09-23-2009 02:54 PM

i got google as my homepage... then i simply type the kind of bondage porn i want for that afternoon and go from there..

38yrsfan 09-23-2009 03:06 PM

It is mostly unnecessary but does depend on web-site adminstrators setting the site access to accept traffic with or without.

Mr. Plow 09-23-2009 03:31 PM

www.whatever.com for me. Just a habit I guess.

teedubya 09-23-2009 04:16 PM

Not only should you NOT use www. but you should 301 redirect all pages so that when someone types in www. that is redirects to the nonwww page.

Silock 09-23-2009 04:21 PM

Who uses yahoo.com anyway?

vailpass 09-23-2009 04:24 PM

yuvutu.com

wait, what was the question?

I finally broke the www habit. I still wonder if it's going to work every time I do it.

htismaqe 09-23-2009 05:50 PM

Not using WWW is incredibly poor form.

I mean, what if I wanted to go to mail.yahoo.com? Or ftp.yahoo.com?

Ebolapox 09-23-2009 05:50 PM

and the only time I www is if a website isn't working properly, and I'm not positive that I got all of the extensions correct.

Yup, I avoid wasted keystrokes whenever possible. Of course I don't need any comments from the peanut gallery asking about my posts on here.

For some reason, I always just go to websites using google. I very rarely go to a website using the address bar. Like if this site wasn't bookmarked,I would type in "chiefsplanet" in google eveytime I wanted to come here instead of typing chiefsplanet.com in the address bar.

some link juice gets attached to http://www.blah.com and some gets attached to http://blah.com

in eyes of webbot / spider... they appear to be different. So, you always want to do a permanent 301 redirect.

Google it.

Also avoids the duplicate content hit.

EyePod 09-24-2009 06:05 AM

I would first press "ctrl" + "L" to get into the address bar (this only works in firefox, in IE it brings up a little "open" box) type yahoo and the press "ctrl" + "enter" and that adds in the www. and the .com; I'm all about the keyboard shortcuts

Inspector 09-24-2009 08:53 AM

I've never used the internet or even a computer.

I just got one of them color TV's a couple of months ago. It is so cool.

Same

dtebbe 09-24-2009 12:25 PM

Either will work, but any webmaster worth their salt should redirect all traffic to one or the other if you want the best results in Google and other search engines.

DT

htismaqe 09-24-2009 12:28 PM

There are servers on the internet that aren't running HTTP.

But that's ok, just assume all domains with no A record are webservers, because people are too lazy to type "www".
