Grass seed

What is the most reliable brand for overseeding?

Bane 09-24-2009 06:40 PM

I use Scotts, but theres several very good brands out there.

Hog's Gone Fishin 09-24-2009 06:44 PM

Columbian red bud.

Fairplay 09-24-2009 06:48 PM

Panama red

I've never had a problem with Pennington Kentucky 31. At Lowe's or Sam's Club, it runs around $54 for a 50 lb bag.

I have tried that in the past didn't get very good results. Of course, I struggle winning the grass battle. I am to the point that I feel I need to just buy the most expensive and hope for the best.

Try this...

<object width="425" height="344"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/AmxcmpR1GQA&hl=en&fs=1&"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/AmxcmpR1GQA&hl=en&fs=1&" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="425" height="344"></embed></object>

Crabgrass is pretty good I hear.
Easy to grow.

pr_capone 09-24-2009 07:17 PM

What kind of grass are you trying to plant?

Fescue?

Bermuda?

Zoysia?

In the midwest, hardly anything grows more reliably than Buffalo grass. Its requires very little attention and hardely ever needs mowed.

Bugeater 09-24-2009 07:38 PM

It's getting kinda late in the year to be seeding.

RJ 09-24-2009 07:41 PM

That's what I was thinking. Will seeding now have any benefit next spring?

I don't know, if I seed in the fall I usually do it late Aug or early Sept, that way it has time to get established before winter. I prefer to do it in the spring.

RedandGold 09-24-2009 07:51 PM

Early fall and early spring are the best times to seed. The temperature is perfect and there's plenty of precipitation.

If you overseed now (this batch will germinate without any problem) and then overseed again next spring, you should have very nice results.

stoopid n00b..now is the perfect time to seed. it gives it almost 6 weeks to grow..and the roots keep growing over the winter. then you have no problem not burning the new seed when you treat it for weeds next year.

Hey stupid n00b, it's not unusual for us to start getting shitty weather in October here.

Simply Red 09-24-2009 09:03 PM

I like Jack Herer strand, it's really nice. What an artist.

BWillie 09-24-2009 09:04 PM

How do you plant Zoysia (sp?) seed? Is there Zoysia sod? I love that type of grass. It is like carpet, and it just doesn't grow alot unless it's hot out.

Not necessarily, there was one year Halloween got canceled because of an ice storm, and we've seen snow in late Oct here before.

LOL..Put it this way..growing that grass is done just like hair club for men..you have to put thousands of plugs in the dirt..you can buy them through a mail order catalog. I bought Lombardi Poplars through a catalogue..they were bare rooted and about 12 inches long..tiny..within 3 years they are 35 ft tall now..lol

Snow isnt a big deal..hard frosts are..if it gets in the mid 20's the grass will go into suspended animation and be dormant..but the roots still keep growing

Simply Red 09-24-2009 09:30 PM

are Bill Parcells and Bugeater REALLY arguing over grass growth tips?!

Well I can guarantee you we will see several hard frosts within the next six weeks. I'll be sure to let you know when they happen, n00b.

God I hate Zoysia. I know it is low maintenance but that ugly brown color in the off season is just sickening. Plus, of your neighbors have really nice fescue next door you will piss them off royally when then zoysia started to take it over.

I was always a fan of Zoysia, but only b/c of it being low-maintenance. The browning part does suck, no doubt. Our lawn currently consists of a variety of Zoyzia and Tall Fescue. But the majority of it has been overran w/ Creeping Charlie ground cover that was planted on the hill behind our house, (by our lovely fuggin neighbors). Now we can't get rid of it and it has spread throughout our lawn!! :cuss:
