Tight ends on pace for record production in 2009

By CHARLES ODUM
AP Sports Writer

NFL coaches are using athletic tight ends to take advantage of mismatches more than ever.

A record 15 tight ends are on pace to catch at least 50 passes this season.

It's an evolving trend as the tight end has become a leader, instead of a complementary player, in passing attacks.

In the past four seasons, an average of 10.5 tight ends logged at least 50 catches, according to STATS, LLC. That's nearly double the number from 10 years ago.

Wide open offenses and zone defenses have created openings for skilled tight ends in the middle of the field. Young quarterbacks seek them out.

Whatever the dilemma an offensive coordinator faces, the tight end has increasingly become the answer

I love a good tight end.

nychief 10-07-2009 05:32 PM

yeah... we'd be 0-4 AND have TG!

Sure-Oz 10-07-2009 05:33 PM

I like the 2nd round pick better

Ive noticed each week a new TE putting up over 100 yards. Finley was a monster. Last week was Dallas Clark.

teedubya 10-07-2009 05:52 PM

Good thing we have... uh... who do we havE?

Pioli Zombie 10-07-2009 05:58 PM

In April after a 1-15 season you guys will all be glad to have that extra 2nd round picks. 3 picks in the first 50 will be nice

Dallas Clark is having a monster season in general man.

Valiant 10-07-2009 07:12 PM

Think it has more to do with NFL trend of TE's on why you are seeing more catches.. The elites will still be up in the 70+ range and if you have one on a team you do not need the 2nd or 3rd WR to be as good as traditional teams..

That and a good TE gives you hands and better blocking when they have to..

The way this franchise works, we'll draft a TE with that pick :banghead:

I guess that means it's much easier to find a tight end who can catch these days if half the teams in the NFL have them...

ForeverChiefs58 10-07-2009 10:17 PM

Yes, because the Chiefs have an AWESOME history with 2nd rd picks! :spock:

Well with Carl Peterson doing the picking for 20 years I can see where you are jaded.

Yeah, he's on pace for a 100+ catch season and 1400+ yards.

Saccopoo 10-07-2009 10:47 PM

But, but, but...

You can't draft a TE high. They suck. The position is worthless. It goes against all historical relevance!

THIS IS MADNESS!

I don't exactly see Vernon Davis lighting the world on fire.

Vernon Davis is no Jermaine Gresham that's for sure.

how'd that work out for us with the JA trade? better question, how's it always worked out for kc? the biggest stars leave here, and we're always told we got compensated with great prospects, or draft picks, that NEVER pan out. name me one time its benefited kc to trade a star. go ahead, i'll wait...

If I was going to Arrowhead, I would. Sure as shit can't wear my JA jersey.

OctoberFart 10-08-2009 11:10 AM

TG trade was a good trade because he won't last too many more years in the league and if KC ever gets it turned around with the next coaching regime after Haley TG would be retired anyway.

Garcia Bronco 10-08-2009 11:33 AM

You can thank Shannon Sharpe for this. Again...he is the legend. :P

and where would TG rate in the KC offense? I remember him having 100 receptions or close to it in a 4 win and 2 win season. move on people TG wouldn't save this team.

Taco John 10-08-2009 12:13 PM

It was tough watching Shannon Sharpe win a Superbowl with another team.

Thankfully, you guys won't have to go through such pain.

wild1 10-08-2009 12:16 PM

I don't have any wounds to nurse over someone who wanted out and asked for it for basically an entire year.

kysirsoze 10-08-2009 12:21 PM

I really miss him being a Chief, but I still think it was the right move.

Steron 10-08-2009 12:22 PM

Personally, I hope TG gets his ring with Atlanta. Wouldn't hurt my feelings in the least. He was a great player for many years in KC. You can't blame an older player for wanting out of a total overhaul. Good luck Gonzo. Go get you championship.

Demonpenz 10-08-2009 12:31 PM

my friends and I go to the bar to watch the falcons. Without TG there OR JA it sucks watching the chiefs.

Hammock Parties 10-08-2009 12:32 PM

Sean Ryan leads the Chiefs in catches and touchdowns, too.

He's part of the trend!

SEAN RYAN IS A BEAST!
