Paging the resident CP Satellite TV Install Expert

I think Mr. Skip Towne is the resident Satellite TV installer guru….

I’m moving from a house to an apartment; I’ll be on the ground floor of an apartment building that faces approximately NE, but I think Direct TV needs a SW Line of Sight? The apartment requires a free-standing dish support thing (which is fine).

The apartment is Uverse ready, as well as Time Warner (pass), and DTV ready. I don’t want to leave DTV if I don’t have to. The lady on the phone said they ‘very rarely cannot achieve Line of Sight’. Is this true? I’m just wondering how LOS is achieved from a ground floor on the opposite side of a 3 story building.

I really want to keep DTV (and I’m sure BuckinKaeding does as well ;)).

I'm no expert but I needed a north west line of sight when I moved.

Do you now live in Antarctica?

MichaelH 10-15-2009 06:30 PM

Where I live, it's definitely a SW view of the sky. I don't think it varies that much unless you're in the other hemisphere.

NW? LMAO

I know some of their installers are stupid. A friend had Directv installed during late fall. No leaves. Come spring, he would lose signal.

If you don't get offended and actually show concern, yes, he'll like you. But his default settings aren't that way.

Uh oh; is Skip not the DTV guy? Maybe I’m getting my CPers mixed up.

Skip’s cool (never met the man, but he has a cool avatar and seems like good folk here on CP).

Yea, Skip is the DTV guy ... they are just talking about Skip being grouchy. :)

good to know.:D

I agree with the previous poster who said the line from the DTV lady was BS. I thought the same as well when she made such a general statement.
I'm pretty sure I remember hearing the dude who hooked up our DTV at our house that we needed a SW view;.....then looking at our apartment building....we're on the ground floor (terrace level) with 3 levels above us.

I'm standing outside while looking virtually straight up in the SW direction thinking to myslef.." no F'n way".

lol

kepp 10-16-2009 10:42 AM

You need a SW view. And, yeah, the lady saying that it's rare that they can't get a line of sight is BS.

I really need to find an account sharing partner. They took away our free HD channels and damn near every decent channel we got for free this week. I had to go to a friends house just to watch Always Sunny on FX last night.

Dayze 10-16-2009 12:30 PM

My main worry was moving, and not being able to establish a LOS – then be hit with an early termination charge etc.

I called DTV and they said if they can’t get a signal etc, the work order will be closed and I could call and cancel the account with no fees.

So…I won’t k now if I’m keeping DTV (my preference) until Oct 31.

BK - I’ll PM you to see how we want to work this if a signal can’t be established etc

Get an apartment on the other side of the bldg. Or put the dish over there and trench around to the north side. Or call and use the mover program. They will seend a guy out to try to get you line of sight. If they can''t they will let you out of your commit.
