Three Runners die in Detroit marathon
Autopsies expected....
http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/ath_free_...marathon_death DETROIT – Autopsies are expected after three half-marathoners died during the Detroit marathon. Officials say 36-year-old Daniel Langdon collapsed at about 9:02 a.m. Sunday between the 11- and 12-mile markers and 65-year-old Rick Brown collapsed at 9:17 a.m., near where Langdon went down. Officials say 26-year-old Jon Fenlon collapsed at about 9:18 a.m., just after finishing the 13.1-mile half-marathon in 1:53:37. Autopsies are planned for Monday. Rich Harshbarger, vice president of consumer marketing for the Detroit Media Partnership, told the Detroit Free Press emergency personnel were on the scene within seconds. More than 19,000 people were registered to participate in the 32nd Detroit Free Press/Flagstar Marathon. Since this was in Detroit, I bet the coroner finds that the runners were sweating bullets when they died. |
Running is the dumbest form of exercise ever. I don't ****ing get how people can love that shit so much. It's not like you see physical benefits in added muscle/more chicks. You also have to put up with shin splints.
If you want to keep your heart healthy, there are hundreds of different cardial exercises you can do than run 26.2 miles in the span of a few hours. Sorry if any of you are runners, but there's nothing I hate more on this earth than someone I know who makes a big fat deal out of their running regiment. "How about we just schedule the meeting before the day starts? We can do it at 7 AM. That should be plenty of time." "Weeeeeeellllll... I'll JUST getting done with my morning 10 mile run at that time and I'll need to shower and stuff.... you know... can we push it back to 8?" If God wanted us to run, he would have given us wheels for legs. |
Id never take any liquid from someone I didn't know
|
Dang. The dead guy beat me.
I did, however, beat my personal best yesterday in the half-marathon. I ran the Denver half-marathon in 2:06:39, blasting my old record by 7 minutes and 4 seconds. SNR, I'll pm you with the details. |

I don't run unless I'm being chased by something bigger than me.
|
I did the KC marathon on saturday in 3:50:05 and I didnt die. I drank liquid from strangers all day... SNR, if you are interested, I can give you my training schedule... well after I get back from my afternoon 10k that is...

I am running the Marin Corps Marathon on Sunday with my 52 year old dad. I do it because I can. I don't let it interfere with my job or family time. Many people don't know I run... Some people enjoy bench pressing enough weight that they require a spotter so they don't drop the bar on their throat...a la Stafon Johnson from USC. People get injured from lifting weights....people get injured from running, and some die as seen in this article. And a lot of people die and injure themselves from just being fat. I run marathons because I can. Not because I want to work-out my cardiovascular system. I run to push my body to see if I can shave some minutes off of my last run. ...like the bench presser pushes himself to see if he can do 1 more rep or add a little more weight. ...and like the fat person seeing if they can fit one more slice of pizza in their stomach. :D |

I ran the Chicago marathon Back in '04. Someone died during that one also. Apparently if you consume nothing but water for 4 hours while running 26.2 miles you can die from a lack of sodium. I had never heard of that before then.
|
I try and run 3 times a week. I've been doing it for years. I never have run a marathon and have no desire to do so. But, to each his own...
|
Well, I can see why they're suspicious about this. I mean, it was held in Detroit, after all.

I'd say those three guys chose "beyond". |

the ones i see don't wear those crazy helmets just the standard it's WHERE they ride. I don't get upset too much because hey atleast they are doing something other than sitting at walmart shoplifting pinwheels, but they are always in this road that has two lanes and the are riding for pleasure people swerve around them into on coming traffic, then i get pissed. I honestly just come up beside them and honk a ****ing air horn that my dad bought for his boat. Sometimes they fall, but **** them.

Then, after I turned left, I realized he was trying to say "Thank you" so I would have been able to read his lips. |
I'll take my chances of dropping dead in a race versus dropping dead of a coronary living my old lifestyle.
Oh, and to support Penz, I hate drivers when I'm running, I hate runners when I'm driving, but I pretty much always hate bicyclists. I ride my bike to work on rare occasion, but I map out a route WITH BIKE LANES. Not doing so makes you a selfish a-hole IMO. |

i walk often but and run until i am out of breathe which is like two blocks, i hate it (and you know it's going to happen. when people are coming up to a busy street and their bumper pretty much goes into traffic as they are looking the other way, instead of staying behind the white line.

I think what is suspicious is that all three men died shortly after the 11 mile marker (assuming that the half marathon finishes at the 13.1 marker of the marathon course).
I am suspicious that they will find something in their system that was given to them by a spectator. That being said, I'd still take water or gatorade at the legitimate aid stations if I were in a race... |

I am not into running for fun, but you are hella wrong on getting ladies with it.. There are tons of hot women who run and want partners or hookup at the afterparties.. As for the rest, pretty much spot on.. I can sprint, no shin splints.. If I ****ing jog one of those things shins are bothering me half a mile in.. |

Let me know if you decide to do it. It's definitely on my list next year. I have a hard time imagining a more challenging half. |

I think the full marathon fills up much quicker though as there are a lot less spots for that. There are also some psychos who do a double: 1/2 on Sat and Full on Sunday. |

Ah, okay. I'm definitely going to target the ascent for next year as long as I can keep running and getting into shape. The guy I talked to today is really, really into running, and in fact just finished a 50-mile mountain race. Looking him up, it appears that he's in the 1:30 to 1:40 range on half-marathons and 3:15 or so in marathons. He did the Ascent in 3:15 and was in the top ten percent of male finishers. I know a woman who did the ascent this year, too. She ran a flat half-marathon in 1:53 this summer in a race that we both ran, and her time in the Ascent was 4:49. She said it was not enjoyable. I suspect that the ascent is as much about leg strength as it is endurance. |

It's scary to even think about it, which makes me want to do it more. Hopefully I'll see you there, even if it's only as a distant speck above me.

Wow. Pikes peak sounds amazingly hard. I want to try it. I can do a 1:50 half comfortably... and my best is just over 1:40. I am gonna have to look into this race.

Maybe you can do it with me and stlchiefs this year. This will take some psyching up. I was having trouble getting enough air at 12,600 in Breckenridge this year, and Pike's Peak tops out over 14,000 feet. It's not just the 13 miles of uphill, it's doing it on half oxygen. |

Lungs will be a problem here. :) I'm not as fast as you, so you'd probably have more of an issue with air since you'd need more of it (plus I have a 5,300 foot head start being in Denver). I ran one half-marathon at 9,000 feet this summer and didn't notice it at all, but it wasn't overly steep (800 feet up and back down). I ran another one that topped out at 11,800 and it was a notable problem, but as I mentioned in a past thread, it was mostly uphill (4,000 feet up and something like 1,000 back down). I ran another one that topped out at 12,600 and I had to stop five times to get air - not stop to walk, but actually stop. It was half uphill (3,000 feet up and then back down), but was pretty steep. 14,000+ has to be seriously hard. |

I know Rageeumr is also a bigtime runner. He gave me some tips before I ran my first full.

Sadly I've let myself slip a bit. I was training hard last winter for the St. Louis marathon and then a buddy of mine scheduled his wedding for that weekend. No problem, I'll just run Olathe. Then mother nature had something to say about that and they canceled Olathe. So I was kind of deflated after training all winter and not racing.
But as of last week I'm back at it, slowly working to get in shape for Spring marathon season. Pikes Peak sounds like exactly the kind of race that would end me. Hills are my kryptonite. I can only imagine what a mountain would do to me. And I know what I felt like after hiking to the top of Peak 8 at Breck last winter. Granted I was in ski boots, but even WALKING at that altitude kicked my arse, and I was in pretty good shape at the time. |
You are already signed up for Olathe right? IIRC they transfered the registration from 2009 to 2010. That will be what I am training for over the winter. I was also thinking Vegas in mid December. Anyone ever run that one?

A buddy and I were thinking about doing Vegas but we put off training too long. Plus it's about a month before my wife is due with our first, so I'm a little leery about leaving town. The crappy thing is that it's on a Sunday. Riding on a plane the day before a race can really dehydrate you, and if I flew into Vegas on a Friday, I would be EXTREMELY tempted to do a bunch of other things that might dehydrate me. |
FWIW, I ran the Pikes Peak marathon... hmm... must be at least 12 years ago.
Once you get above the tree line, it really is mostly a glorified fast march with a little hopping from boulder to boulder for good measure. If I were given the choice today, I would MUCH rather run up Pikes Peak again than run down it. That's what really kills your legs. I trained in St. Louis and found one long hill for repeats. The legs held up fine. There was no way to train my lungs for the altitude, though, short of buying an altitude tent for sleeping--so it did make the miles near the top significantly harder than normal. Good luck. |
