ESPN's Bob Griese Suspended for 'Taco' Comment About NASCAR's Montoya

Given the language disucssion we've had here lately, the similarity to the issue we had here several years ago with Taco John, and the fact that it took place during a football game broadcast...

I thouth this was interesting.

ESPN's Bob Griese Suspended for 'Taco' Comment About NASCAR's Montoya

Oct. 27, 2009
Rob Kuznia -- HispanicBusiness.com

It's been a scandalous week for Walt Disney Company's ESPN.

A couple days after ESPN baseball analyst Steve Phillips was fired for having an affair with a production assistant who went public, broadcaster Bob Griese today was suspended for one week after making a racially insensitive comment about Juan Pablo Montoya, a NASCAR driver from Colombia, according to the Associated Press .

The gaffe occurred Saturday, when Griese was commentating for a college football game, and a graphic showing NASCAR's five leaders in the points race appeared on screen. When another analyst asked why Montoya wasn't on the list, Griese replied that he must be "out having a taco."

Griese has since apologized twice on air.

Meanwhile, Montoya doesn't seem to be taking the comment too seriously. He declined to comment, but did say he'd never even heard of Griese.

I don't see a problem, I like tacos.

Priest31kc 10-27-2009 04:50 PM

LOL

Jenson71 10-27-2009 04:51 PM

No big deal, really.

Ya know what they say If it looks like a taco eat it ;)

Buck 10-27-2009 05:20 PM

So stupid.

What if he had said hes out eating a hamburger?

Its a well known fact that Latino people like tacos.

Earthling 10-27-2009 05:25 PM

This kind of stupidity, (the suspension), is actually detrimental to the whole racial issue. IMHO And I am sensitive to the issue.

Mr. Flopnuts 10-27-2009 05:27 PM

Who cares what color you are? Tacos are delicious. So is watermelon, fried chicken, bangers and mash, and phad thai. If we can't laugh and celebrate our cultural differences in good spirits, forget about eliminating racism. It'll never happen.

KCTitus 10-27-2009 05:27 PM

I really like Taco Bell's new Black Jack Tacos...pretty righteous.

It's hyper-sensitivity and politeness. We try to atone for our past mistakes and go a little overboard sometimes.

They're ****in good. My wife made fun of me for ordering it, but it's all about the pepperjack sauce. The African American taco shell really has nothing to do with it.

Buck 10-27-2009 05:30 PM

Its like when some guy (I think that old player for the white sox who took off his pants) comically accused Lou Pinella of stealing his wallet.

Then they fired him for making detrimental remarks towards Pinella since he is Latino.

I never even knew Pinella was Latino.

I'm surprised your wife lets you go to Taco Bell :)

Every once in awhile when she falls asleep, I fish my testicles out of her purse.

I never even knew Pinella was Latino.

I'm pretty sure his heritage is Spanish, as in Spain, not Latin America.

BigMeatballDave 10-27-2009 05:36 PM

LMAO

No, but those Mesopotamian bastards will rob you blind.

Do Columbians even eat tacos?

Buck 10-27-2009 05:49 PM

During their broadcast of Game 3 of the 2006 American League Championship Series, broadcast colleague Lou Piniella, who is of Spanish descent, made an analogy involving the luck of finding a wallet, and then briefly used a couple of Spanish phrases. Lyons responded by saying that Piniella was "hablaing Espanol" -- Spanglish for "speaking Spanish" -- and added, "I still can't find my wallet. I don't understand him, and I don't want to sit close to him now."

I watched that live, and it was a great piece of sports casting.

How come no Italians would be upset if I asked them: " so were u out eating some pizza?"

The "African-American" taco comment sure obliterates the political atmosphere of correctness . Anybody want to guess why Taco Bell chose that color of taco shell? Why not call it what it is..... black..... OMG, the PC helicopter force is coming after me. Ross Perot, save me!

Wow the timing.. I had an elderly man come into work just the other day and he refered to the Mexicans who live in the same community he does as "Tacos". He said "there's alot of Tacos down there". The customer is always right?

As chefsos pointed out earlier,

Latino means something different than Hispanic.
