****ing snow
****ing snow, ****ing work, ****ing stupid me for going in :cuss:
We had at least 8 inches of snow in the last 24 hours and 11 inches in the last 48. We were told that if the weather was bad enough work would be closed today. No such luck. Manufacturers, service businesses and even the university were closed today. The police said don't go in unless you have to. Of course, we (a service industry) are open. I had to dig out of some 1-1/2 foot drifts on my driveway, had to rock the car back and forth to get momentum to plow through the neighborhood street and onto a main road. The end of my road was buried because the plows pushed snow off of the main road and onto the ends of neighborhood streets. While the side streets are terrible, the main roads are fine and I finally get onto it. Two blocks from my home on the main road I had a choice of running into oncoming traffic at a stop light or running into a 4-5 foot snow bank because while the road had been plowed, there was no salt or sand to provide traction. I chose to slide into the snow bank and spent a good bit of time digging out. Thankfully I carry a shovel in my car and thankfully a couple of guys came by to help push me out. So here I am at work with probably 15-20% of the staff. I am and idiot for coming in and I am pissed that I was asked to. |

So, can a company be held liable for requiring their workers to come to work during this type of weather, if one of them is in an accident? Probably not, I suppose.
|
well, consider it lesson learned
|
just to throw everyone a curve, shoot up the office-place.
|
I think that would make my weiner kinda cold. I'll pass.
|
lots of people injured today in the snow, be careful out there allow yourself more time, and use your head. Sometimes that extra cash isn't worth getting injured over :(
|
I blame Global Warming.

Serious question here and I'm not knocking anyone. But, do people not know how to drive in snow? Or are the road crews spread thin?
In all my life I've never missed work because of snow/weather and the only time school was shut down was because of Mt. St. Helens erupting. And, IIRC, that was for only one day. |
yeah, I probably woulda told my boss to eat my ass.
|
Send it to me you big pussy.
We only got about 1/2" where I live. :cuss: |
76 degrees here
|
A foot and a half drifts? You're lucky, the city plowed the hell out of my street last night and the shit is piled up at least 4 or 5 feet at the end of my driveway. I won't be going anywhere anytime soon because I am not going to go out in the 30 mph winds and fight that shit.

everyone else was driving around like they were delivering pizza on a summer night. if I got any momentum, my car slipped and slid around like a reeruned kid trying to ice-skate. its a miracle there weren't more accidents. |

i called the road crews this morning because pflumm a busy road hadn't been touched cars all over the ****ing place. Had to leave a message.
|
I got up at 7 and fired up the snowblower and cleared a few paths, there were a few drifts that took 2-3 swipes. Now,I've shit, shaved and showered and have to hit the streets because I'm on my January print deadline,I hope all the idiots who don't know how to drive in this stuff are at home.

the sucky thing in st joe is if someone is an idiot an slams into your car, you are going to know the person, and they probably aren't going to have insurance and will pay you off with whatever st joe product they are dealing with at the time. Still recieving payments of cherry mashes to this day

I'm guessing with the economy sucking and all the budget cuts that winter road maintenance will not be what it has in the past.
this will probably mean less plowing than usual and less salt/sand treatment amounts as well. |

Not one of my professors ever said that GB was 100% caused by humans, neither did the textbooks. Then again, that was in 2005. Maybe things have changed since then, but I doubt it. Personally, I can't fathom how a logical person can say with complete certainty that burning all that fossil fuel has had absolutely no affect on the Earth's climate, but then again, a lot of people have no idea about global patterns. |

That is f***ing insane. It's 5 miles to downtown from that point, all highway, after half a f***ing inch of snow. I was driving around last night around 10, and the roads were okay. I was going 40-45 down 169, which is 10-15 under the speed limit, but still, no major issues. |

Once again, I'm not here to argue about GB, I just really don't like when people use cold weather as evidence against global warming. It's so asinine, it makes me lose faith in humanity. Exact same thing with people doubting evolution by bringing up the argument of "well how come humans aren't evolving from monkeys NOW??" Two of my biggest pet peeves. |

Good news: work is cancelled, whole city (DSM) is basically shut down with only police, service workers, road crew, and the national guard out. Bad News: My driveway, which looks really cool in the summer, has steep 5-foot rock walls on both sides that naturally has this canyon effect leading to 4-foot piles of snow. Woke up this morning to a monster 4-foot drift on my garage door. I've been at it for over 2 hours with a couple coffee breaks and I'm only halfway done. |

No snow here in wichita, but cold as a bitch.
