Let's face it: yesterday was dismal. Literally, yesterday was the shortest-day Sunday of the year. The craptastic year of 2009 is winding down.

Equinox is the time that has equal time of daylight and night. Vernal and autumnal.

I got a heartful full of solstice.

Today is the Winter Solstice (in our hemisphere) which is the longest night and shortest day.

The length of daylight will be something like two seconds longer tomorrow, and so on, until the Summer Solstice.

The equinoxes are are when the amount of daylight and darkness are equal.
