Ayers fined for body slam on Charles

Ayers fined for Jamaal Charles body slam
Posted by Mike Florio on January 9, 2010 10:40 AM ET
A reader asked us last night to obtain an explanation for the NFL's failure to fine Broncos defensive end Robert Ayers for his Turkey Joe Jones move on Chiefs running back Jamaal Charles in Week 17.

As it turns out, no explanation is needed; Ayers was fined.

Per NFL spokesman Greg Aiello, the league slapped Ayers with a $5,000 sanction for unnecessary roughness.

The hit can be seen at roughly 1:15 of the NFL.com highlight package from the Chiefs' upset of the Broncos.

I dont think 5K is nearly enough. He could have broken his neck. If you get fined 30k for wearing a sombrero, it doesnt add up.

Mr. Laz 01-09-2010 10:21 AM

he should gotten blind-sided and knock the F*** out the next play by our guys.

hell with fine ... i want our guys to grow a set and take care of their own.

Chiefaholic 01-09-2010 10:22 AM

Eagerly awaiting the arrival of the Donkey fans who adamantly claimed it was a "legal tackle before the whistle". Thank God HC wasn't injured. I'de hate to think the dirty cheating Broncos cost us both Priest Holmes AND JC with illegal shit.

Holmes went out because of Shawne "roidman" Merriman of san diego, not Denver

And yes, if I were a player, I'de have a hard time not getting a little retribution on the following play. If I was an offensive lineman, I'de have to give Ayers a little of the Donkey's blocking tactics and blow his knee caps up.

That was the second time, the first was a horse collar by Denver.

In their own way they did .......

J. Charles

25 Rush, 259 yds
2 TDs

Also if you go back and look at that play Albert rush over Cox came running from the sideline both got cut off and had to be restrained and Cassel was running to Ayers before he was cut off.

I could be wrong, but didn't Priest injure his hip against the Donks with a Horse Collar tackle? I know that Merriman done the helmet to helmet thing that put the exclamation point on his retirement later on. But, I was thinking the Donks started the downfall of one of the best HB's to ever play for the Chiefs.

I couldnt agree more on the last statement.

5k is the equivalent of 10 dollars to these guys, and if wearing a ****ing sombrero is more dangerous than doing wwe moves on players after the wistle, then roger goodell needs a new profession.

How about if I just say that it would have been a legal tackle if it had occurred before the whistle.

I'm unfamiliar with the play. Was Holmes acting as a receiver or did he have the ball as a runner when the contact was made?

No need for the quote marks. It was legal if the league did say so itself.

Well that may be true he did deserve a fine, but is unfair to compare this guy's fines with OchoCinco's. I'm pretty sure this guy was a first time offender, when ochocinco seems to get a rise out of his fines, by matching what he is fined and giving it to charity. Ayers on the other hand did this out of frustration and ignorance. he will learn his lesson, unlike some

You can disagree with the NFL's rules all you like, but the fact is that type of tackle is ILLEGAL. It's illegal across the board for all games played in the NFL. Ayers deserved both the penalty and the fine.

No, he deserved to get his dick knocked into the dirt after he did that. I thought Albert was going to do it, but he was too soft. We need a player with a mean streak that is going to stand up for his guy.

If anyone has seen that 49ers Americas Game where Steve Young takes a late hit and the whole 49ers calvary rushes out to beat down the guy who hit him. That's what should have happened.

verbaljitsu 01-09-2010 05:10 PM

I don't know whether that type of tackle is legal or not during the flow of the game, but it is certainly not legal after a whistle. Frankly it is a bitch move. Ayers would never be able to pull something like that off during an actual play, and that is why I think it is distinguishable from the Dawkins hit. He could only do it once Charles was stood up by two other Denver tacklers and all his progress stopped. And after the whistle.

BigMeatballDave 01-09-2010 05:14 PM

Exactly. Or like when the Chiefs all came out after Otis Taylor took on Ben Davidson after his cheap shot on Len Dawson. In a season like this, I don't care if it got a bunch of them ejected. Some scrub first-round bust deliberately tried to seriously injure our best player, and the whole team should've run out and ended that son of a b****'s season. I hope Ayers gets injured in training camp and never plays another down. He doesn't deserve to be in the same league as legitimate players and athletes.

Yeah... Had that BS taken place against Peyton Manning or Tom Brady, it would have been replayed a thousand times on ESPN and talk about the cheap shot against a franchise player. Ayers got off too easy and I wish Jamaal would have elected to head back on the field after setting the team record and finish the game with the NFL record and run the score up even more.

That may be because most people know who Peyton Manning and Tom Brady are. They are actual franchise players.

Fewer people have heard of Jamaal Charles. Or, say, Jerome Harrison.
