WTF: Norv gets 3 year extension

Chargers | Turner agrees to three-year extension

Mon, 18 Jan 2010 19:32:46 -0800

Updating an ongoing story, the San Diego Chargers announced they have signed head coach Norv Turner to a three-year contract extension that will keep him with the team through the 2013 season. Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed.

DaFace 01-18-2010 09:47 PM

Back away from the ledge, Buck. It's not worth it.

LaChapelle 01-18-2010 09:47 PM

Nolan leaves
Norv gets extended
The AFC West has gone bonkers

kstater 01-18-2010 09:48 PM

LMAO

Marty goes 14-2 loses in the Playoffs and gets fired.

Norv goes 13-3 and loses in the playoffs and gets an extension.

Rain Man 01-18-2010 09:50 PM

I hear that Buckinkaeding tried to commit suicide when he heard this, but Nate Kaeding missed when he tried to kick the chair.

LaChapelle 01-18-2010 09:51 PM

Supposedly the Chargers players were taunting the Jets players. Saying they didn't belong in the playoff. They overlooked the Jets and Norv gets an extension

Hog's Gone Fishin 01-18-2010 09:53 PM

This is good news !

cdirty 01-18-2010 09:54 PM

up next.... Extend LT for a few more years too?

This has been in the making for a while but I think with that stupid decision he made last night that should have been re-evaluated.

Marty made the mistake of going toe-to-toe with A.J. Smith over personnel matters and got the Spanos family involved in a heated battle.

Smith won.

IIRC it also was family matters...ie wanting to hire his brother and son

Of course that could have been his play to get fired

There's nothing wrong with that. The GM takes care of personnel, the coach takes care of the players.

Marty, as he did in Kansas City and Washington, tried to take control of the franchise.

And lost.

Vincent Jackson was arrested again before playoff game
Posted by Mike Florio on January 18, 2010 7:01 PM ET
On Sunday, we posted an item regarding the status of Chargers receiver Vincent Jackson's legal entanglement from the days preceding the team's 2008 division-round loss to the Steelers.

And, as luck would have it, Jackson encountered another legal entanglement in the hours preceding the team's 2009 division-round loss to the Jets.

According to 10news.com, Jackson was pulled over by a San Diego police officer on Sunday.

A department spokesman said the officer stopped Jackson because his music was too loud.

The officer cited Jackson for having expired vehicle tags and driving with a suspended license, a misdemeanor under California law. Jackson was handcuffed "for a short period of time," but the officer opted not to take Jackson to jail.

Still, Jackson's car was impounded, and he hitched a ride to the game with quarterback Philip Rivers.

Jackson's DUI charges from January 2008 are still pending.

How's that since he got them closer to the Super Bowl than any previous coach since Bobby Ross?

San Diego is a very good team. Yes, they blew it yesterday. But once they finally get over LT and bring in a real running back through the draft this year, get back guys like Castillo and Brown, not to mention Merriman, this team will be a playoff team for years.

If the Chargers had kept Michael Turner instead of LT, they'd have been a Super Bowl team last year.

ForeverChiefs58 01-19-2010 12:23 AM

Didn't marty do the same thing when he was coach them?

BryanBusby 01-19-2010 12:31 AM

Marty was fired for reasons that had nothing to do with what the Chargers did that season.

ForeverChiefs58 01-19-2010 12:33 AM

Norv might have gotten them closer than marty, but marty won more games and their results and superbowl appearances are the same.

As a chiefs fan I was glad they fired him. I thought he would win the big one with that team.

DJ's left nut 01-19-2010 12:39 AM

Here's the problem - Norv is an excellent regular season coach.

Sure, he'll choke in the playoffs, but who really cares? They'll whup our ass twice a year and we won't be within sniffing distance of capitalizing on their post-season yack job.

I was hoping they'd can Norv and bring in some young coordinator who proceeds to pull a McDaniels and sabatoge the organization.

Marty got them to the AFC Divisional Game in 2007. He went 14-2 to get there. Disagree with the Michael Turner comment too, but that's just speculation on both our parts, right? Nothing to argue there.

Okay, maybe my comment was a bit optimistic. Wishful thinking perhaps. But the decision to go for the onside kick seems like a harbinger of bad things to come for Coach Turner. One of those watershed moments of fate that doom a coach's future with his current franchise. Hell, that play may have secured Norv a place on the next NFL Films epic fail highlight reel. We'll see.

But more importantly, a lot of Norv's talent came from Marty's drafts. [Two of the players you mentioned, Castillo and Merriman, were Marty's picks. Not sure who Brown is.] Will they be able to retain that talent? Replenish it? Can Norv win in SD with his own players?

But I do agree with you in that the dolts should be a good team next year as they'll likely retain the core of their talent. Here's the draft breakdown:

We had this argument the other day, but the man is extremely fortunate. He's been able to be a head coach for the better part of the last 15 years, pretty much the entire salary cap era... and he's barely achieved squat.

He took over a Schottenheimer team that had a decent playoff run, but they still lost in the AFC title game. I don't think he's Rich Kotite or anything, but I think if you even gave someone like Herm 15 years, he'd probably chalk up one decent playoff run. Every year we hear how great they are and they're the team to beat, yet they never beat anybody.

He's on Sirius with Solomon Wilcotts (The Red Zone) from 1pm to 3pm. He's adamant about never coaching again. Reading between the lines based on comments made on Sirius he was probably offerred the Billls job but turned it down. Bills owner Ralph Wilson's affinity of football men of a certain age has its limits.

Tim Graham of ESPN reports that Marty Schottenheimer "badly" wanted the Bills coaching job, but Wilson was never on board.

Schottenheimer worked previously with G.M. Buddy Nix, and publicly soft-pedaled his interest in the gig. But his experience with Nix didn't matter because Wilson "wasn't comfortable" with Schottenheimer.

The news helps to explain why Marty's son Brian turned down a chance to interview. But it's unlikely to calm the anger of Bills fans or change the perception that Chan Gailey was a fallback choice.

Bills fans would probably prefer a coach with Schottenheimer's track record if the team was looking for someone with head coaching experience.

Very interesting. Seems like that would have been a match made in heaven. Buffalo is the perfect blue collar martyball town. That fanbase would have welcomed him with open arms.
