A poll about your online presence.
Which of the statements in the accompanying poll is most true of you?
Poll to follow, obviously. |
I vote Yes!
|
It varies with me. Sometimes I don't want to offend people, and just choose my words, speak carefully and precisely. The internet allows me to do this with revision.
Sometimes you just need to go with whatever your feeling, and the internet sucks for that. |
I let it fly and wait for the sons of bitches to come try and find me if they've got the balls.
|
I can do both equally well.

Poll FAIL by Rain Man! Yes!!
|
I've killed men for less than that.
I was wondering if I was unusual, in that I feel that I can share more of my real personality online than I can in real life. Apparently it's not that unusual, which is interesting to me because it means half of the people we know in real life are presenting a different persona than their actual personality. |

I think I'm pretty much the same either way.

I'm far more reserved in real life than I am on here. I don't really know why. I think maybe I'm a lot more cautious about possibly insulting or offending people in real life, and for some reason don't worry about it as much online. |

There's no way to track rep in real life, but aside from that, you may be right. |
I'm about the same either way. I tend to be a wall flower until I get comfortable in a situation and get to know the people better. Then I open up a bit more, but still hold certain things pretty close the the vest.
On here, I mostly lurked my first few years, even though I read the board every day. In RL, people tend to get the idea I'm unapproachable when they first meet me. Then once I get comfortable enough with them or the situation to let down the forcefields a bit, they are surprised how much more relaxed I am than what their initial perception suggested. |
Where is the "I've lost my burst" option?
|
I express myself better in written form—period.
|
My online persona is exactly the same as my real life personality. There's no difference. I like being myself; not sure why I'd try to be anybody else.
|
I get a lot more rep on here than in real life thats for sure.
|
In real life I post more often.

I live an easy life. My job does not require dressing well, sucking up, being polite, or curbing my weird humor. I have little family to speak of and, what family and friends I have, already know what I'm like. |
I can do both equally as well. I'm very comfortable in both realms. Probably because I'm almost exactly the same IRL & online; one difference is that I am a wee bit more polite IRL when I am in public or at work and someone gives a sports/pop culture/political opinion that I disagree with. I give an honest effort at being nice.
|
I try very hard to avoid conversations with stupid people in either realm. Whether on line or in real life, if I find myself surrounded by idiots I just switch to another thread.
|
So much of communication is lost when it's just written word, that I can't possibly do as well online as in real life. A great example is meeting women - you can like them and feel like you've got something going all you want online, but once you meet in real life you'll never be able to tell if there is really something there.
That's just an example, but still. |

I'll let Pink Floyd answer this one for me and why I chose #3 option...

Much less for me. I hate when your timing is off IRL and I rarely am in a thread as it's happening. So most of my funny thoughts and smartazz comments have been already been taken care of by the members of cp.
I'm normally a very outgoing guy in real life but the timing isn't there on the web. Which is why I'm still under 1000 posts in 10 years. |
22 people can express themselved better on the internet than in real life?
For real? How can that be so? |

I've studied and assessed the problem for me in real life. In real life, if there's a group of people talking, I don't want to interrupt, so when someone finishes talking, I'll wait a beat or two before saying something to be polite. But other people seem to understand the exact instant that Person 1 stops talking and they'll jump in immediately. So I'll wait until Person 2 stops talking and will try to give them an extra beat or two to be sure that they're done, but by then Person 3 is already talking. So I pretty much just stand there and don't say anything, whereas on the internet we can all talk simultaneously so it's not an issue. In real life, my post above would've been "I've stu-" and then I would stop talking because the next post after me would've already started talking. |
I'm going to have to abstain, Mr. Rain Man. This poll requires thought and introspection.
And, I would rather die on Spider Island than engage in thought and introspection on Saturday morning. FAX |

In RL, you should get a t-shirt that says "On Line I'm A Really Funny and Interesting Guy". |

I need to stay off the intertubes for a while. Its sunny and around 70 today, think I'll go for a ride, I don't get confused when I'm burning carbon fuels. |
I'm quite a bit funnier in real life due to timing and knowing the audience. I also poke fun quite a bit more, because it's a different dynamic, as far as how the pokes come across. I've also learned that online, many times, there's a parsing of every little word and meaning that isn't done or necessary in RL conversation.

I'm pretty much the same. The difference is that here I interact with people that I'd never otherwise come into any sort of contact with. It's not like I frequent places in real life where I'll run into idiots like Hog Farmer.
|
It takes a special personality type, or maybe subtype, to really successfully express yourself online - I think I'm just myself as I am in real life, but because you can't see my facial expression, hear the tones in my voice, and grasp my interpersonal presence then most of what I "say" online comes off as just bland or normal.
I'm sure I'm the only one this applies to..... |
|
I'm way cooler.
|
Weird, I express my personality more at work & on-line than I do in my personal life. I tend to be a little shy.
|
I'm the same here as in real life.

I think the biggest difference between RL and online is that in RL it is frowned upon to jerk off while talking to others, while online it's sort of expected.

I don't change the way I act or talk to people just because I'm not looking them in the eye.
Some people grow huge balls or attitudes in this setting. Those people are usually ones who don't have the balls to say the things they would like to say in real life. I don't think their lack of balls is the problem either. It's the fact that deep down, they would like to say those kinds of things in the first place. |

I sometimes have a hard time distilling my thoughts to a few lines. In real life I don't have the need to limit my form of expression and can just ramble at people.

I do the same thing, but I've noticed that people don't always finish listening to my posts. |
