If you're into folk music, then Iron & Wine is an absolute must. He's a brilliant songwriter. Here's one of my favorites from him:
Upward Over the Mountain Mother don't worry I killed the last snake that lived in the creek bed Mother don't worry I've got some money I saved for the weekend Mother, remember being so stern With that girl who was with me? Mother, remember the blink of an eye When I breathed through your body? So may the sunrise bring hope Where it once was forgotten Sons are like birds Flying upward over the mountain Mother, I made it up From the bruise of a floor of this prison Mother, I lost it All of the fear of the Lord I was given Mother forget me Now that the creek drank the cradle you sang to Mother forgive me I sold your car for the shoes that I gave you So may the sunrise bring hope Where it once was forgotten Sons are like birds Flying upward over the mountain Mother, don't worry I've got a coat and some friends on the corner Mother, don't worry She's got a garden we're planting together Mother, remember the night That the dog had her pups in the pantry? Blood on the floor and the fleas on their paws And you cried 'til the morning So may the sunrise bring hope Where it once was forgotten Sons are like birds Flying upward over the mountain |
Iron & Wine Sodom, South Georgia
Papa died smiling Wide as the ring of a bell Gone all star white Small as a wish in a well And Sodom, south Georgia Woke like a tree full of bees Buried in Christmas bows And a blanket of weeds Papa died Sunday and I understood All dead white boys say, "God is good" White tongues hang out, "God is good" Papa died while my girl Lady Edith was born Both heads fell like Eyes on a crack in the door And Sodom, south Georgia Slept on an acre of bones Slept through Christmas Slept like a bucket of snow Papa died Sunday and I understood All dead white boys say, "God is good" White tongues hang out, "God is good" |

Iron & Wine Resurrection Fern
In our days we will live Like our ghosts will live: Pitching glass at the cornfield crows And folding clothes Like stubborn boys across the road We'll keep everything: Grandma's gun and the black bear claw That took her dog When Sister Lowery says, "Amen" We won't hear anything: The ten-car trains will take that word That fledgling bird And the fallen house across the way It'll keep everything: The baby's breath Our bravery wasted and our shame And we'll undress beside the ashes of the fire Both our tender bellies wound in baling wire All the more a pair of underwater pearls Than the oak tree and its resurrection fern In our days we will say What our ghosts will say: We gave the world what it saw fit And what'd we get? Like stubborn boys with big green eyes We'll see everything: In the timid shade of the autumn leaves And the buzzard's wing And we'll undress beside the ashes of the fire Our tender bellies are wound around in baling wire All the more a pair of underwater pearls Than the oak tree and its resurrection fern |

Iron & Wine Bird Stealing Bread
Tell me, baby, tell me Are you still on the stoop Watching the windows close? I've not seen you lately On the street by the beach Or places we used to go I've a picture of you On our favorite day By the seaside There's a bird stealing bread That I brought Out from under my nose Tell me, baby, tell me Does his company make Light of a rainy day? How I've missed you lately And the way we would speak And all that we wouldn't say Do his hands in your hair Feel a lot like a thing You believe in Or a bit like a bird Stealing bread Out from under your nose? Tell me, baby, tell me Do you carry the words Around like a key or change? I've been thinking lately Of a night on the stoop And all that we wouldn't say If I see you again On the street by the beach In the evening Will you fly like a bird Stealing bread Out from under my nose? |

Leonard Cohen Take This Waltz Now in Vienna there's ten pretty women There's a shoulder where Death comes to cry There's a lobby with nine hundred windows There's a tree where the doves go to die There's a piece that was torn from the morning And it hangs in the Gallery of Frost Ay, Ay, Ay, Ay Take this waltz, take this waltz Take this waltz with the clamp on its jaws Oh I want you, I want you, I want you On a chair with a dead magazine In the cave at the tip of the lily In some hallways where love's never been On a bed where the moon has been sweating In a cry filled with footsteps and sand Ay, Ay, Ay, Ay Take this waltz, take this waltz Take its broken waist in your hand This waltz, this waltz, this waltz, this waltz With its very own breath of brandy and Death Dragging its tail in the sea There's a concert hall in Vienna Where your mouth had a thousand reviews There's a bar where the boys have stopped talking They've been sentenced to death by the blues Ah, but who is it climbs to your picture With a garland of freshly cut tears? Ay, Ay, Ay, Ay Take this waltz, take this waltz Take this waltz it's been dying for years There's an attic where children are playing Where I've got to lie down with you soon In a dream of Hungarian lanterns In the mist of some sweet afternoon And I'll see what you've chained to your sorrow All your sheep and your lilies of snow Ay, Ay, Ay, Ay Take this waltz, take this waltz With its "I'll never forget you, you know!" This waltz, this waltz, this waltz, this waltz ... And I'll dance with you in Vienna I'll be wearing a river's disguise The hyacinth wild on my shoulder, My mouth on the dew of your thighs And I'll bury my soul in a scrapbook, With the photographs there, and the moss And I'll yield to the flood of your beauty My cheap violin and my cross And you'll carry me down on your dancing To the pools that you lift on your wrist Oh my love, Oh my love Take this waltz, take this waltz It's yours now. This is one chilling song and video. Sufjan Stevens John Wayne Gacy, Jr.
His father was a drinker And his mother cried in bed Folding John Wayne's t-shirts When the swingset hit his head The neighbors they adored him For his humor and his conversation Look underneath the house there Find the few living things, rotting fast, in their sleep Oh, the dead Twenty-seven people Even more, they were boys With their cars, summer jobs Oh my God Are you one of them? He dressed up like a clown for them With his face paint white and red And on his best behavior In a dark room on the bed He kissed them all He'd kill ten thousand people With a sleight of his hand Running far, running fast to the dead He took off all their clothes for them He put a cloth on their lips Quiet hands, quiet kiss on the mouth And in my best behavior I am really just like him Look beneath the floor boards For the secrets I have hid |
Another absolutely chilling song from Sufjan Stevens. Casimir Pulaski Day
Goldenrod and the 4H stone The things I brought you when I found out You had cancer of the bone Your father cried on the telephone And he drove his car into the Navy yard Just to prove that he was sorry In the morning, through the window shade When the light pressed up against your shoulderblade I could see what you were reading All the glory that the Lord has made And the complications you could do without When I kissed you on the mouth Tuesday night at the Bible study We lift our hands and pray over your body But nothing ever happens I remember at Michael's house In the living room when you kissed my neck And I almost touched your blouse In the morning at the top of the stairs When your father found out what we did that night And you told me you were scared All the glory when you ran outside With your shirt tucked in and your shoes untied And you told me not to follow you Sunday night when I cleaned the house I found the card where you wrote it out With the pictures of you mother On the floor at the great divide With my shirt tucked in and my shoes untied I am crying in the bathroom In the morning when you finally go And the nurse runs in with her head hung low And the cardinal hits the window In the morning in the winter shade On the first of March, on the holiday I thought I saw you breathing All the glory that the Lord has made And the complications when I see His face In the morning in the window All the glory when He took our place But He took my shoulders and He shook my face And He takes and He takes and He takes |
This one's a little difficult for me because it was the song I played at my father's funeral last summer. It's a gorgeous song.
Sufjan Stevens Vito's Ordination Song I always knew you In your mothers arms I have called your name I have an idea Placed in your mind To be a better man I've made a crown for you Put it in your room And when the bridegroom comes There will be noise There will be glad And a perfect bed And when you write a poem I know the words I know the sounds Before you write it down When you wear your clothes I wear them too I wear your shoes And your jacket too I always knew you In your mothers arms I have called you son I've made amends Between father and son Or, if you haven't one Rest in my arms Sleep in my bed There is a design To what I did and said |

Another Billy Bragg & Wilco (Doing Woody Guthrie Songs) My girlfriend at the time and I used to get sloshed and sing this together. Ohhh, the memories.
Hesitating Beauty For your sparkling cocky smile I've walked a million miles Begging you to come and wed me in the spring Why do you, my dear, delay? What makes you laugh and turn away? You're a hesitating beauty, Nora Lee Well, I know that you are itching to get married, Nora Lee And I know how I'm twitching for the same thing, Nora Lee By the stars and clouds above we could spend our lives in love You're a hesitating beauty, Nora Lee We can build a house and home where the flowers come to bloom Around our yard I'll nail a fence so high That the boys with peeping eyes cannot see that angel face Of my hesitating beauty, Nora Lee Well, I know that you are itching to get married, Nora Lee And, I know how I'm twitching for the same thing, Nora Lee By the stars and clouds above we can spend our lives in love If you'd quit your hesitating, Nora Lee We can ramble hand in hand across the grasses of our land I'll kiss you for each leaf on every tree We can bring our kids to play where the dry leaves blow today If you'd quit your hesitating, Nora Lee Well, I know that you are itching to get married, Nora Lee And, I know how I'm twitching for the same thing, Nora Lee By the stars and clouds above we could spend our lives in love If you'd quit your hesitating, Nora Lee Live version performed in Kansas City |

the lyrics to this tune are creepy as all get out all the way through, but these last few lines are quite profound to me, simple yet effective. |
cosmic, love all the wilco on here, how about some good old jay farrar? the other songwriting half of uncle tupelo could use some representation.
i still think that Son Volt's Trace is one of the best f**king albums ever recorded if you like the singer/songwriter or folk genre. |

Favorite song for those mornings when I'm hungover as hell.
Kris Kristofferson Sunday Morning Coming Down Well I woke up Sunday morning with no way to hold my head, it didn't hurt. And the beer I had for breakfast wasn't bad, so I had one more for dessert. Then I fumbled through my closet for my clothes and found my cleanest dirty shirt. And I shaved my face and combed my hair and stumbled down the stairs to meet the day. I'd smoked my brain the night before on cigarettes and songs that I'd been picking. But I lit my first and watched a small kid cussing at a can that he was kicking. Then I crossed the empty street and caught the sunday smell of someone frying chicken. And it took me back to something that I'd lost somehow somewhere along the way. On this Sunday morning sidewalk, wishing, lord, that I was stoned. 'Cause there's something in a Sunday, makes a body feel alone. And there's nothing short of dying, half as lonesome as the sound, on the sleeping city sidewalks, Sunday morning coming down. In the park I saw a daddy with a laughing little girl who he was swinging. And I stopped beside a Sunday school and listened to a sond that they was singing. Then I headed back for home and somewhere far away a lonely bell was ringing. And it echoes through the canyons like the disappearing dreams of yesterday. On this Sunday morning sidewalk, wishing, lord, that I was stoned. 'Cause there's something in a Sunday, makes a body feel alone. And there's nothing short of dying, half as lonesome as the sound, on the sleeping city sidewalks, Sunday morning coming down. |
Dan Bern God Said No

R.I.P. Elliott Smith Waltz #2
First the mic, then a half cigarette Singing "Cathy's Clown" That's the man that she's married to now That's the girl that he takes around town She appears composed, so she is, I suppose Who can really tell? She shows no emotion at all Stares into space like a dead china doll I'm never going to know you now But I'm going to love you anyhow Now she's done and they're calling someone Such a familiar name I'm so glad that my memory's remote Because I'm doing just fine hour to hour, note to note Here it is, the revenge to the tune "You're no good, You're no good, you're no good, you're no good" Can't you tell that it's well understood? I'm never going to know you now But I'm gonna love you anyhow I'm here today and expected to stay on and on and on I'm tired I'm tired Looking out on the substitute scene Still going strong XO, Mom It's ok, it's all right, nothing's wrong Tell Mr. Man with impossible plans to just leave me alone In the place where I make no mistakes In the place where I have what it takes I'm never going to know you now But I'm going to love you anyhow I'm never going to know you now But I'm going to love you anyhow I'm never going to know you now But I'm going to love you anyhow |

Some very good songs on here, but I'm surprised no one's mentioned Ryan Adams. His newer music has drifted more toward alt-country, but he definitely has some folkier stuff.

Springsteen's Nebraska project was excellent,in fact, the song lyrics to Highway Patrolman would end up being the inspiration for the 1991 film The Indian Runner. Here's the song followed by the movie trailer.

Damnit. Just realized that I posted the Bon Iver show earlier, when I meant to post a Yeasayer Blogotheque show. Anyway, here's the Yeasayer. As I said earlier... it takes a few minutes for the real action to start... but the buildup is part of the beauty of these Take Away Shows:

With the music industry being as sadly *****ed up as it is and other distractions, I very much doubt he could ever pull it off. I'd love to see him keep it afloat as long as he can because Illinoise is one of the most interesting albums to come out in a long time. I'd love to hear his songs regarding states like Kansas, California, Missouri, Colorado, and Florida. (The states I've lived in). |
