Folk/Singer/Songwriter thread....

Here is the place for the new mellow for the old ****s.

The Cat Stevens, Paul Simon, Ben Harper, or even Dave Matthews fans.

Sounds similar enough to warrant listening:

And the point was NEW musicians.

So I counter with an unlikely entry...

If you're into folk music, then Iron & Wine is an absolute must. He's a brilliant songwriter. Here's one of my favorites from him:

Upward Over the Mountain

Mother don't worry
I killed the last snake that lived in the creek bed
Mother don't worry
I've got some money I saved for the weekend
Mother, remember being so stern
With that girl who was with me?
Mother, remember the blink of an eye
When I breathed through your body?

So may the sunrise bring hope
Where it once was forgotten
Sons are like birds
Flying upward over the mountain

Mother, I made it up
From the bruise of a floor of this prison
Mother, I lost it
All of the fear of the Lord I was given
Mother forget me
Now that the creek drank the cradle you sang to
Mother forgive me
I sold your car for the shoes that I gave you

So may the sunrise bring hope
Where it once was forgotten
Sons are like birds
Flying upward over the mountain

Mother, don't worry
I've got a coat and some friends on the corner
Mother, don't worry
She's got a garden we're planting together
Mother, remember the night
That the dog had her pups in the pantry?
Blood on the floor and the fleas on their paws
And you cried 'til the morning

So may the sunrise bring hope
Where it once was forgotten
Sons are like birds
Flying upward over the mountain

Iron & Wine Sodom, South Georgia

Papa died smiling
Wide as the ring of a bell
Gone all star white
Small as a wish in a well

And Sodom, south Georgia
Woke like a tree full of bees
Buried in Christmas bows
And a blanket of weeds

Papa died Sunday and I understood
All dead white boys say, "God is good"
White tongues hang out, "God is good"

Papa died while my girl
Lady Edith was born
Both heads fell like
Eyes on a crack in the door

And Sodom, south Georgia
Slept on an acre of bones
Slept through Christmas
Slept like a bucket of snow

Papa died Sunday and I understood
All dead white boys say, "God is good"
White tongues hang out, "God is good"

Iron & Wine Resurrection Fern

In our days we will live
Like our ghosts will live:
Pitching glass at the cornfield crows
And folding clothes

Like stubborn boys across the road
We'll keep everything:
Grandma's gun and the black bear claw
That took her dog

When Sister Lowery says, "Amen"
We won't hear anything:
The ten-car trains will take that word
That fledgling bird

And the fallen house across the way
It'll keep everything:
The baby's breath
Our bravery wasted and our shame

And we'll undress beside the ashes of the fire
Both our tender bellies wound in baling wire
All the more a pair of underwater pearls
Than the oak tree and its resurrection fern

In our days we will say
What our ghosts will say:
We gave the world what it saw fit
And what'd we get?

Like stubborn boys with big green eyes
We'll see everything:
In the timid shade of the autumn leaves
And the buzzard's wing

And we'll undress beside the ashes of the fire
Our tender bellies are wound around in baling wire
All the more a pair of underwater pearls
Than the oak tree and its resurrection fern

Iron & Wine Bird Stealing Bread

Tell me, baby, tell me
Are you still on the stoop
Watching the windows close?
I've not seen you lately
On the street by the beach
Or places we used to go

I've a picture of you
On our favorite day
By the seaside
There's a bird stealing bread
That I brought
Out from under my nose

Tell me, baby, tell me
Does his company make
Light of a rainy day?
How I've missed you lately
And the way we would speak
And all that we wouldn't say

Do his hands in your hair
Feel a lot like a thing
You believe in
Or a bit like a bird
Stealing bread
Out from under your nose?

Tell me, baby, tell me
Do you carry the words
Around like a key or change?
I've been thinking lately
Of a night on the stoop
And all that we wouldn't say

If I see you again
On the street by the beach
In the evening
Will you fly like a bird
Stealing bread
Out from under my nose?

Leonard Cohen Take This Waltz

Now in Vienna there's ten pretty women
There's a shoulder where Death comes to cry
There's a lobby with nine hundred windows
There's a tree where the doves go to die
There's a piece that was torn from the morning
And it hangs in the Gallery of Frost
Ay, Ay, Ay, Ay
Take this waltz, take this waltz
Take this waltz with the clamp on its jaws

Oh I want you, I want you, I want you
On a chair with a dead magazine
In the cave at the tip of the lily
In some hallways where love's never been
On a bed where the moon has been sweating
In a cry filled with footsteps and sand
Ay, Ay, Ay, Ay
Take this waltz, take this waltz
Take its broken waist in your hand

This waltz, this waltz, this waltz, this waltz
With its very own breath of brandy and Death
Dragging its tail in the sea

There's a concert hall in Vienna
Where your mouth had a thousand reviews
There's a bar where the boys have stopped talking
They've been sentenced to death by the blues
Ah, but who is it climbs to your picture
With a garland of freshly cut tears?
Ay, Ay, Ay, Ay
Take this waltz, take this waltz
Take this waltz it's been dying for years

There's an attic where children are playing
Where I've got to lie down with you soon
In a dream of Hungarian lanterns
In the mist of some sweet afternoon
And I'll see what you've chained to your sorrow
All your sheep and your lilies of snow
Ay, Ay, Ay, Ay
Take this waltz, take this waltz
With its "I'll never forget you, you know!"

This waltz, this waltz, this waltz, this waltz ...

And I'll dance with you in Vienna
I'll be wearing a river's disguise
The hyacinth wild on my shoulder,
My mouth on the dew of your thighs
And I'll bury my soul in a scrapbook,
With the photographs there, and the moss
And I'll yield to the flood of your beauty
My cheap violin and my cross
And you'll carry me down on your dancing
To the pools that you lift on your wrist
Oh my love, Oh my love
Take this waltz, take this waltz
It's yours now. It's all that there is.

This is one chilling song and video. Sufjan Stevens John Wayne Gacy, Jr.

His father was a drinker
And his mother cried in bed
Folding John Wayne's t-shirts
When the swingset hit his head
The neighbors they adored him
For his humor and his conversation
Look underneath the house there
Find the few living things, rotting fast, in their sleep
Oh, the dead

Twenty-seven people
Even more, they were boys
With their cars, summer jobs
Oh my God

Are you one of them?

He dressed up like a clown for them
With his face paint white and red
And on his best behavior
In a dark room on the bed
He kissed them all
He'd kill ten thousand people
With a sleight of his hand
Running far, running fast to the dead
He took off all their clothes for them
He put a cloth on their lips
Quiet hands, quiet kiss on the mouth

And in my best behavior
I am really just like him
Look beneath the floor boards
For the secrets I have hid

Another absolutely chilling song from Sufjan Stevens. Casimir Pulaski Day

Goldenrod and the 4H stone
The things I brought you when I found out
You had cancer of the bone

Your father cried on the telephone
And he drove his car into the Navy yard
Just to prove that he was sorry

In the morning, through the window shade
When the light pressed up against your shoulderblade
I could see what you were reading

All the glory that the Lord has made
And the complications you could do without
When I kissed you on the mouth

Tuesday night at the Bible study
We lift our hands and pray over your body
But nothing ever happens

I remember at Michael's house
In the living room when you kissed my neck
And I almost touched your blouse

In the morning at the top of the stairs
When your father found out what we did that night
And you told me you were scared

All the glory when you ran outside
With your shirt tucked in and your shoes untied
And you told me not to follow you

Sunday night when I cleaned the house
I found the card where you wrote it out
With the pictures of you mother

On the floor at the great divide
With my shirt tucked in and my shoes untied
I am crying in the bathroom

In the morning when you finally go
And the nurse runs in with her head hung low
And the cardinal hits the window

In the morning in the winter shade
On the first of March, on the holiday
I thought I saw you breathing

All the glory that the Lord has made
And the complications when I see His face
In the morning in the window

All the glory when He took our place
But He took my shoulders and He shook my face
And He takes and He takes and He takes

This one's a little difficult for me because it was the song I played at my father's funeral last summer. It's a gorgeous song.

Sufjan Stevens Vito's Ordination Song

I always knew you
In your mothers arms
I have called your name
I have an idea
Placed in your mind
To be a better man
I've made a crown for you
Put it in your room
And when the bridegroom comes
There will be noise
There will be glad
And a perfect bed
And when you write a poem
I know the words
I know the sounds
Before you write it down
When you wear your clothes
I wear them too
I wear your shoes
And your jacket too
I always knew you
In your mothers arms
I have called you son
I've made amends
Between father and son
Or, if you haven't one
Rest in my arms
Sleep in my bed
There is a design
To what I did and said

The National Daughters of the Soho Riots

I have your good clothes in the car
So cut your hair so no one knows
I have your dreams and your teeth marks
And all my fingernails are painted

I'm here to take you now

You were right about the end
It didn't make a difference
Everything I can remember
I remember wrong

How can anybody know
How they got to be this way
You must have known I'd do this someday
Break my arms around the one I love
And be forgiven by the time my lover comes
Break my arms around my love

Break my arms around the one I love
And be forgiven by the time my lover comes
Break my arms around my love

I don't have any questions
I don't think it's gonna rain
You were right about the end
It didn't make a difference

I'm here to take you now

Out among the missing sons and daughters of the SoHo riots
Out among the missing sons and daughters of the SoHo riots

I'm here to take you now

Truly the best show I've ever seen or I ever will see. All the songs you want to hear, fantastic band and man, Leonard can still bring it. Chelsea Hotel brought tears to our eyes. Simply beautiful.

I'd love to see him live! I've seen Waits live a couple of times and he puts on one helluva entertaining show. But I've never been able to coerce anyone to want to see Leonard Cohen. :(

Another Billy Bragg & Wilco (Doing Woody Guthrie Songs) My girlfriend at the time and I used to get sloshed and sing this together. Ohhh, the memories.

Hesitating Beauty

For your sparkling cocky smile I've walked a million miles
Begging you to come and wed me in the spring
Why do you, my dear, delay?
What makes you laugh and turn away?
You're a hesitating beauty, Nora Lee

Well, I know that you are itching to get married, Nora Lee
And I know how I'm twitching for the same thing, Nora Lee
By the stars and clouds above we could spend our lives in love
You're a hesitating beauty, Nora Lee

We can build a house and home where the flowers come to bloom
Around our yard I'll nail a fence so high
That the boys with peeping eyes cannot see that angel face
Of my hesitating beauty, Nora Lee

Well, I know that you are itching to get married, Nora Lee
And, I know how I'm twitching for the same thing, Nora Lee
By the stars and clouds above we can spend our lives in love
If you'd quit your hesitating, Nora Lee

We can ramble hand in hand across the grasses of our land
I'll kiss you for each leaf on every tree
We can bring our kids to play where the dry leaves blow today
If you'd quit your hesitating, Nora Lee

Well, I know that you are itching to get married, Nora Lee
And, I know how I'm twitching for the same thing, Nora Lee
By the stars and clouds above we could spend our lives in love
If you'd quit your hesitating, Nora Lee

cosmic, love all the wilco on here, how about some good old jay farrar? the other songwriting half of uncle tupelo could use some representation.

i still think that Son Volt's Trace is one of the best f**king albums ever recorded if you like the singer/songwriter or folk genre.

Absolutely. That is the thing about Sufjan Stevens that makes him such a remarkable lyricist. It's a shocking conclusion and he delivered it well.

Favorite song for those mornings when I'm hungover as hell.

Kris Kristofferson Sunday Morning Coming Down

Well I woke up Sunday morning
with no way to hold my head,
it didn't hurt.
And the beer I had for breakfast wasn't bad,
so I had one more for dessert.
Then I fumbled through my closet for my clothes and found my cleanest dirty shirt.
And I shaved my face and combed my hair and
stumbled down the stairs to meet the day.

I'd smoked my brain the night before on
cigarettes and songs that I'd been picking.
But I lit my first and watched a small kid
cussing at a can that he was kicking.
Then I crossed the empty street and caught the sunday smell of someone frying chicken.
And it took me back to something
that I'd lost somehow
somewhere along the way.

On this Sunday morning sidewalk,
wishing, lord, that I was stoned.
'Cause there's something in a Sunday,
makes a body feel alone.
And there's nothing short of dying,
half as lonesome as the sound,
on the sleeping city sidewalks,
Sunday morning coming down.

In the park I saw a daddy
with a laughing little girl who he was swinging.
And I stopped beside a Sunday school and listened to a sond that they was singing.
Then I headed back for home and somewhere far away
a lonely bell was ringing.
And it echoes through the canyons
like the disappearing dreams of yesterday.

On this Sunday morning sidewalk,
wishing, lord, that I was stoned.
'Cause there's something in a Sunday,
makes a body feel alone.
And there's nothing short of dying,
half as lonesome as the sound,
on the sleeping city sidewalks,
Sunday morning coming down.

Dan Bern God Said No

I met God On the edge of town
Where the wind meets the stillness
Where the darkness meets the light
Where the ocean meets the sky
Where the desert meets the rain
Where the earth meets the heavens
On the edge of town I met God

I asked God
Do one thing for me
Send me back in time
Send me to Seattle
Let me go
Find Kurt Cobain
Take away his gun
Take away his bullets
Talk to him
Make him wanna live
Tell him how we love him
Help him see his glory
God Said No
If I sent you back
If you really found him
You would only ask him
If he could
Help you get a deal
If he knows a lawyer
If he can help you
God Said No

I asked God
Do one thing for me
Send me back in time
Send me to Berlin
Let me find
The one they call Hitler
I will stalk him
I will bring him down
I will bring along
A powerful gun
Loaded with bullets
Obliterate his memory
God Said No
If I sent you back
You would get caught up
In theory and discussion
You would let your fears
Delay and distract you
You would make friends
You would take a lover
God Said No

I asked God
Do one thing for me
Send me back in time
Send me to Jerusalem
Let me go
Let me go find Jesus
Let me save his life
As they try to kill him
Let me take him down
Down from the cross
Take the iron from his body
Try to heal his wounds
God Said No
If I let you go
If you really found him
Walking with the cross
You would stare
Your tongue no longer working
Eyes no longer seeing
Ears no longer hearing
God said Time
Time belongs to me
Time's my secret weapon
My final advantage
God turned away
From the edge of town
I knew I was beaten
And that now was all I had
God Said No

R.I.P. Elliott Smith Waltz #2

First the mic, then a half cigarette
Singing "Cathy's Clown"
That's the man that she's married to now
That's the girl that he takes around town
She appears composed, so she is, I suppose
Who can really tell?
She shows no emotion at all
Stares into space like a dead china doll
I'm never going to know you now
But I'm going to love you anyhow

Now she's done and they're calling someone
Such a familiar name
I'm so glad that my memory's remote
Because I'm doing just fine hour to hour, note to note
Here it is, the revenge to the tune
"You're no good,
You're no good, you're no good, you're no good"
Can't you tell that it's well understood?

I'm never going to know you now
But I'm gonna love you anyhow

I'm here today and expected to stay on and on and on
I'm tired
I'm tired

Looking out on the substitute scene
Still going strong
XO, Mom
It's ok, it's all right, nothing's wrong
Tell Mr. Man with impossible plans to just leave me alone
In the place where I make no mistakes
In the place where I have what it takes

I'm never going to know you now
But I'm going to love you anyhow
I'm never going to know you now
But I'm going to love you anyhow
I'm never going to know you now
But I'm going to love you anyhow

Some very good songs on here, but I'm surprised no one's mentioned Ryan Adams. His newer music has drifted more toward alt-country, but he definitely has some folkier stuff.

Ryan Adams - Oh My Sweet Carolina

Springsteen's Nebraska project was excellent,in fact, the song lyrics to Highway Patrolman would end up being the inspiration for the 1991 film The Indian Runner. Here's the song followed by the movie trailer.

Yeah, he's pretty amazing... even if he's a douchebag.

Bruce Cockburn. One of the most overlooked talents from the 70s and 80s. Still puts out great music and is a deft guitar player and lyricist.

There's a really awesome performance of that at... maybe the Gorge... that I looked for but couldn't find. The crowd just goes nuts. The sun is going down. It's truly epic. Anyway, I'll keep an eye out for it and post it up if I find.

Here's another good one... takes a while for the setup. If you haven't, btw, checked out this series of shows on La Bloqoteque... do yourself a favor and just start browsing the shows.

You've got the Red House Painters, so might as well put Sun Kil Moon out there as well. I especially love the album where he just covers Modest Mouse:

Damnit. Just realized that I posted the Bon Iver show earlier, when I meant to post a Yeasayer Blogotheque show. Anyway, here's the Yeasayer. As I said earlier... it takes a few minutes for the real action to start... but the buildup is part of the beauty of these Take Away Shows:

I challenge any mother****er to listen to that shit and not be moved. Damn.

So Sufjan has already been hit, but I thought I'd throw out this little gem that he did live on the States tour.... damn I wish he would keep going with that concept.

I do too. I love both of his Illinoise and Michigan albums. You have to understand that that is a profoundly daunting task. He's got 48 states to go. Even if he did two albums a year, it would take him 24 years to complete that task. He'd be in his 60's by then.

With the music industry being as sadly *****ed up as it is and other distractions, I very much doubt he could ever pull it off. I'd love to see him keep it afloat as long as he can because Illinoise is one of the most interesting albums to come out in a long time. I'd love to hear his songs regarding states like Kansas, California, Missouri, Colorado, and Florida. (The states I've lived in).
