Omaha
I’m thinking about a possible move to Omaha from Atlanta. What are the pros and cons?
|
Omaha is a hell of a lot colder than Atlanta.
|
Hmmm...there's not really a lot of overwhelming pros about living here...housing prices are decent and traffic isn't terrible, you can get to just about any part of the city in 20 minutes or less most times of the day. On the flip side there aren't really any overwhelming cons either. The winter is going to be worse than in Atlanta, and some of the taxes are higher than other places in the midwest.
If you could be more specific about what you'd like to know more about I'd be more than happy to answer any questions. |
Pro: Nebraska has the lowest insurance of the lower 48 states.
Con: Very limited sea turtle research jobs. |
Here's a link to a great Omaha message board, there is a ton of good information about what's going on here. You can also ask questions on the Welcome to Omaha page without registering.
http://eomahaforums.com/phpBB/index.php I'm getting ready to head out for the day, I'll check back here this afternoon but feel free to PM me anytime with any questions. |

Pros- excellent outdoorsman-type activities, fairly low crime rate, good community involvement and an excellent place to raise a family.
Cons- cold weather, (this was one of the worst years ever) the husker kool-aid and if you have allergy problems you can look forward to daily snot activites in the late summer months. I like it here, our job market is fairly good too, (especially I.T. jobs). Feel free to pm me as well. Posted via Mobile Device |

IMO the best places to be are either SW Omaha or Sarpy County. |

I work at the base but live in Iowa, on purpose. Property taxes is the reason. For instance, I have a cabin on 5 acres in the woods and hills and pay about 2800 in property taxes on a 250,000 valued home. My old boss had a 300,000 value home and paid over 6000 in property tax in Bellevue, (Sarpy County). |
Free orgies with Gonzo. That's a plus.
|
Iowa schools are excellent too. Top 3-5 in the Nation. (Iowa Basic Skills Test sound familiar).
As others have said stay out of North Omaha. South Omaha is getting pretty rough too...as is some places in CouncilTucky. |

Pros: Plenty of choices of places to go eat and drink, a nice cold winter (I like winter so I see it as a pro) overall the seasonal changes are great, great outdoors activities, jobs seem to be available, easy to get around the city, for the most part you feel safe in most places, decent schools, a local music scene that is OK with a lot of good local bands, College World Series and some pretty good events at the Qwest Center
Cons: High taxes, not only homes but it cost us $500 to plate a new car and that was not including the sales tax, you have to listen about the Cornhuskers 24-7, potholes! Omaha's streets have never been that great but in the winter it is a mess like this year, some pretty humid days in the summer, lack of good fireworks for 4th of July (have to to to Missouri or South Dakota to get some good stuff), great grilling weather most of the year, home prices are decent. As for where to live...I live in NW Omaha and think it is very nice. So is Sarpy County and Papillion. |
From what I saw, there's not a whole lot of diversity in Omaha.
Whether you take that as a pro or a con is up to you. |
Oh and the women are easy

Pros: Niles Paul is from Omaha
Cons: You'll have to wait a few months before you can celebrate Nebraska winning the title. |

Actually it's funny because the only thing KC has that Omaha doesn't have is two loser professional sports franchises and a lot more people. |

Two Words...GO BEEF!
But seriously, I've been here for 25 years and I love it here. The taxes blow ass, but that's because there's only like 6 people who live here so people get squeezed. It's pretty conservative, but I don't think it's overbearingly so. I live in Papillion, I do recommend staying out of the city. The mayor is a ****ing idiot. Omaha Rocks though. It's a good town. |

Stay away from West O. Seriously. Soccer moms are vicious. :D
Any small town on the outskirts of the Big O is a good move. |
Papillion is a nice area. Bellevue used to be the asshole of the metro but it's a lot better now. I think we graduated to like a gland or perhaps a nipple.

Cons: Gawd Damned Nebraskans |
Kansas City North for the most part. KC is more metropoltion that Omaha. But its not a bad city at all.

Pros: Less traffic
Cons: More snow |
Pros: Its not Council Bluffs
Cons: Its not Kansas City |
Cons: Omaha Royals
Pros: They are better than the Kansas City Royals |

Actually, the O-Royals games are a good time. Fairly inexpensive and rosenblatt is a nice stadium. Its quite a shame that they're tearing it down this year. Posted via Mobile Device |
Here are some more pros:
Alexander Payne films all of his movies in and around the Omaha metro area. We have corn. The Henry Doorly Zoo kicks ass! There are a lot of cornfields. Hunting is great... plenty of deer, pheasant, turkey, etc. Did I mention we have corn? |

Anyway, the City of Omaha is building a new downtown stadium for the CWS, and the Royals are building a new one in Sarpy Co. |

So Omaha is alot like KC after all.

I went to school at Creighton for awhile, so I do know what I'm talking about with Omaha (which my friends and I called "Ohmigod" because we wondered, "what the hell did we do wrong in our lives to end up here?"_
My sister lived in Omaha for years b/c her husband was stationed at Offut. Omaha is a bloated small town whose residents act like small town people but they think they're a city. Hence they look down on "Iowegians" from Council Bluffs. And, they're obnoxious about the Cornhuskers. Its like they can't imagine anyone in Nebraska liking anyone else. When people would ask my sister if she was a Cornhusker fan, she'd answer, "No, I'm a catholic". |

Oh wait, you said you attended Creighton, so there's no doubt you're an obnoxious prick.

I'm an obnoxious prick, but I have no kin in Omaha.
I've been there 8-10 times, so perhaps that's the reason. |
I also love it when people give us crap for all being Husker fans, just what in the hell would you expect when coming to...uhhh...Nebraska?
|
OMG I WENT TO AUSTIN TX AND ALL THEY WANTED TO DO IS TALK ABOUT THE LONGHORNS!!! IT WAS SO OBNOXIOUS!!!

In their defense, the NU fans have calmed way down since the Callahan era hit. Bug, you have to admit that in the late 90's and early 2000's the kool-aid was flowing and there were a lot of obnoxious dick holes in the area.(When they play the game on the pa system at Bakers and all employees were required to wear red on Fridays).
That type of thing is a rarity now. Even though the program is starting to turn itself around. Posted via Mobile Device |
