Is Pete Carroll calling all the shots there or is he 2nd in command?

I never really thought too much of Carroll but god damn. If he's calling the shots I give him his due. This is one of the more logical drafts I've seen in ages. They got so much and didn't even have to mortgage anything. It's admirable to see a team run a draft where they don't try to outsmart theirselves, take the obvious deals that are there for the taking at positions of need, and don't try to conform to some kinda outlandish character screening that whittles your draft board down to nothing.

On the other side of the coin, they better be right about Whitehurst...

looking at how Pete handled the draft, it's becoming more obvious that he might be right.

You know what is sad?

So many teams are so stupid we sit here and awe at teams that make logical picks. It's amazing how taking the guys you should take will do wonders for you instead of trying to make picks to show you are a super genius.

If Piolis scouts spend as much team researching talent as much as they do with character, we would be better off now. Community Service > talent. **** me.

New 49er Taylor Mays Implies Pete Carroll Broke Some Sort of Vague Promise to Draft Him

RENTON — Four years ago, Taylor Mays left Seattle to play for Pete Carroll at USC.

Carroll and the Seahawks passed on a chance to bring him back to his hometown, opting to pick another safety — Earl Thomas of Texas — with the 14th pick of the first round on Thursday.

Mays, who went to Seattle's O'Dea High School, was chosen by San Francisco with the 49th pick, the fifth safety taken in the draft. During a conference call with Bay Area reporters, Mays was asked about Seattle's selection of Thomas.

"It was interesting," he said, according to The Associated Press. "I definitely thought from the relationship that we have, from the things that he had told me about what I needed to be, what the draft process is, things that I needed to do, I felt he told me the complete opposite of the actions that he took, which was definitely alarming.

"There were things he told me I needed to do as a football player versus the actions he took and who he took as a safety. I understand it's a business, but with it being a business, honesty is all I'm asking for."

The main issue for Mays?

Carroll's implication that Mays didn't have anything to worry about entering the draft.

"That my game was OK," Mays said. "That my backpedal was fine, my tackling was fine, it was all the things that I asked, what do I need to work on, what do I need to show all these points? I was kind of led to think I was OK. It is what it is, and I'm so happy to be with the 49ers on the team Ronnie Lott played on."

Carroll was asked about Mays' comments after the conclusion of the third round Friday night.

"Well, first off, I love Taylor," Carroll said. "I love the player that he is, and we were thinking that we would have a terrific chance to get him somewhere."

Carroll said it was the matter of Seattle getting a player it thought would be chosen as high as seventh overall.

"I'd like to pick all my guys, but it just didn't work out," Carroll said. "Unfortunately for Taylor, it was a hard day for him."

A year ago, Mays was projected as a potential top-15 pick had he entered the draft after his junior season.

"His expectations were very, very high," Carroll said, "and mine, too. So I feel for him. But I know what he's going to be like. ... This is a remarkably competitive guy, and prideful, and I'm sure he's got a chip on his shoulder, and it's going to serve him well.

"It's not going to help us in the division."

i thought Pete Carroll is the coach that shouldnt coach at the NFL level. NOw these same guys are saying he's drafting great? Get the **** outta here.

Drafting isn't coaching, dipshit. He's still an awful gameday coach, and I don't know if his style is conducive to the NFL.

They drafted the right value in the first 2 rounds. Otherwise, it was just another draft.

They got the job done, but I don't think anyone's going to look at this draft and say they hit a home run. They were just lucky enough to have two marquee picks in a loaded draft.

That's more than I can say for our draft.

It's more than just the draft. The acquisitions of Lendale White and Leon Washington for basically nothing were top notch.

They had a great draft. I've been a big fan of Kam Chancellor for a long time and obviously of Tate. McCoy was a good pickup as well.

Taylor Mays is no different, I'm sure, than Jimmy Clausen, Tate, Sam Young & Eric Olsen. I'm sure all of them thought that we'd draft them at some point, but sometimes people hear what they want to.

does anyone think that j.clausen will hold a grudge over weis not picking him up like t.mays is holding over pete carrol. i definately would.

Mays and Carroll is more fun though cause they're in the same division.

It's pretty simple, people. Carroll has spent the past decade coaching at USC. My God, I'd HOPE he'd know this draft well; he gameplanned against many of the players. This is probably the best draft he'll ever have, due to that familiarity.

two of carrols better moves came through trades, albeit one of them was a former trojan.

I think it would be wise for teams to hire college football coaches as draft consultants. I'd do it.

Taylor Mays and Pat Willis are on the same defense...there's some freakyness to that.

The Patriots' draft yesterday turned into "The University of Florida, Northeast Branch" because Belichick is buddies with Urban Meyer so he knows Meyer's kids and took his advice on them.

Why is NE obsessed with tight ends?

I'd also disagree that they've "sucked for the last 5 years". Last year's was pretty damn good. '08 was okay, but '07 blew chunks. Decent players, IMO, in bold. Unknowns italicized (injuries).

But I have no desire to turn this into a Patriots draft debate thread, nor do I think you or anyone really gives a shit. You just said it to try to get a rise out of me, because you're kind of a dick. That's okay, though. My team has won 107 games in the past 9 seasons, so they must be doing just fine without your input or opinion of their methods.

How he drafted has nothing to do with how he coaches.

When he was a coach with the Patriots and Jets, he sucked balls because he tried to be their buddies. He couldn't handle dealing with grown men who got paid big money. Carroll's methods worked better with college kids. Whether or not he's learned anything (in terms of how to deal with NFL players) remains to be seen.
