funny aside how much do you want to spend? I was given a piece of wood with casters bolted on when I asked for one. They told me they would actually spend money on one if I used this one for a while and showed that it would not just collect dust in the corner of the garage. I went around on this thing for about a week and they finally gave in. Spent $50 on a board. One month later it was collecting dust in the corner of the garage. |
basic stuff. Go to a local skate shop and they can usually help (please support a local shop instead of corporations and online shit). He won't need a pro deck nor top of the line trucks. A good basic set of Red's bearings should work for the wheels.
The key is to get him something that he will be able to learn tricks on or he will quit and waste the money you spent on it (but not go all out either in case he really doesn't like it). If you get the bargain basement Walmart shit, then he won't be able to really skate without tearing it to shit. Here's a link for a range of what should work for him http://shop.ccs.com/searchresults/N=...ome%3A%20Promo |
do NOT buy it at walmart
that's all I know for sure kids busted them inside a week like nobody knew that |
also, since he's 8, pay attention to the length and width of the deck. A mini should be perfect for him.
Are you in the KC area? |
I would look around on Craigslist and pick up a good board for a cheap price. You can drop hundreds of dollars on a good board.
I don't do it anymore. I actually like a Ripstick a little better, but I know that will make the real skate crowd turn their nose at me. I am spending my free time working out and trying to learn to ride my unicycle..... but, go to a skate shop, figure out what you like.... then start looking for it on craigslist. |

Any deck is good for an 8 year old as long as it isn't one from Wal-Mart, K-Mart, etc. You can either go to a skate shop or go online to get a deck, wheels, trucks, etc. A lot of skate shops make their own boards and will sell them cheaper than the name brand decks. I have bought many decks from the website that KC Native posted and I highly recommend it. CCS also has their own brand of equipment.

get him a football instead?

Look what it did for Tiger Woods. Dude has bitches stashed EVERYWHERE just waiting to give it up. |
I hope you have good health insurance, Trav.

Not sure, but I'm doubting this one gets used again. Might be able to get it at a good price.

There is a company called termite you can go to termite.com or google it or whatever. They make boards for "gromits" kids. They are designed just for the kids size. They also have pads small enough for the little ones. My sons first board was a termite. Super cool company and very good product. I also highly recomend taony hawks series of videos on trick tips. They start with the basics all the way up to the toughest tricks out there. I've skated all my life, well until my body completly broke down any ways. Skating is an awesome thing for kids to get into. Support your kid and get him the right equipment it makes a world of differance. Good luck.

As others have said that Wal-Mart crap is awful. Bad bearings especially but the wheels, deck, and trucks suck as well. The bearings are the worst. Back in my day Swiss Bearings were the best and German Bearings were good too.

Give him anything but a skateboard. Geez, I hate skate punks. Especially Independence skate punks.

Whatever this kid was using:

You guys are right, I don't want him hanging around a bunch of skater punks...
I'd might as well just buy him some cigarettes and drugs. I'd like to see a video of skater epic ownage, wrecks and shit. That outta deter him. |

Not all skateboarders are punks. There's a lot of them that you don't see on the streets all the time that are just normal kids. It's actually a great hobby for kids. |

Nope. But if you want to greatly increase the likelihood that your kid ends up hanging around with the kind of reeruns that literally sat stock still while their friend was screaming about his broken nuts, get him a skateboard. Seriously - watch those kids from 9 - 20 seconds in that video - no movement whatsoever. If you want your daughter to be a shallow whore, send her to beauty pagents. If you want your son to be a ****stick drug addict, get him a skateboard. Neither approach guarantees succes, but they're pretty good starts... |

If you encourage the accomplishment aspects of it then it's very good for him. There's nothing like working on a trick for awhile and then nailing it. |
shit, a lot of skaters (Actually most now that I think of it) are dorks.
Check out Rodney Mullen (one of the best ever). <object width="480" height="385"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/bPYlM1VPP_Y&hl=en_US&fs=1&"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/bPYlM1VPP_Y&hl=en_US&fs=1&" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="480" height="385"></embed></object> |
Props for mentioning rodney. Still my favorite skater to this day.

Any board is fine. Just make sure you hit him over the head with it hard enough to get the point across that skaters SUCK

I don't know why anyone would be surprised by that. |

For kids, you need to go for a skateboard that is more stable and has comparatively bigger tires. I gifted my nephew GASACIODS a mini cruiser and we are very happy about it.
It's been a year and it's still as good as new. And it offers extra support for beginners to learn. |

I got my 9 y/o (at the time) a OneWheel Pint. It can go practically anywhere, from pavement, gravel, grass, etc. I'd recommend it. Just make sure he has the protective gear. This is her riding with a bike helmet. I got her a new skate helmet after this video was shot.

I think how one acts is a reflection on how they were raised and has little to do with what sport they play.
My best friends and I (all skaters) were very respectful to everyone and enjoyed the challenge of skateboarding. It teaches you physical toughness and mental dedication. I will say all of the skating in my youth has prob been bad for some of my body parts: (Knees) @ 40yo, but at the same time... most likely helped to keep me slim. |

I found my old board in my storage unit when I moved into my house. Let it collect dust until one day I asked the neighbor kid if he wanted it.
https://scene7.zumiez.com/is/image/z...e--_270853.jpg I had this board when I was a teenager too. Loved it. |
We’ve always bought blind boards and accessories
|
This skateboard live close to you?
|
I used to have a Gordon & Smith board. Loved that board!
Bennett Pro trucks Road Rider 4 wheels ( one of the first with encased bearings) That board was almost a $100 in the 70's.. They now go for $400 on ebay. |
I got my 9 yr old (who had never skated at the time) one for Christmas last year, I went in to the local skate shop and answered questions about skate level, size, weight etc. How much I wanted to spend on it and then we picked out all the components that would suit him, they put the whole thing together on site and I probably spent about $250 or so. Which is a bit more than I wanted but it looks pretty badass and decent quality.
That was last year and he still uses it when we don’t have 3’ of snow on the ground. |

Get a penny board. Once you can ride one of those you can skate on anything.
