Things to do in Manhattan New York
 

I'm aware this is a KC oriented BB but we have many well traveled posters that visit, post regularly and this is the only BB I frequent where the topic fits. My techie and midget porn boards don't take kindly to off-topics.

Been going into Manhattan, NY for six months every Saturday without fail for Krav Maga classes but until this coming weekend my trip has consisted of getting on train, getting dropped off at Penn Station, taking class then taking my usually black and blue ass back home.

This weekend I have company. She's female, somewhat sane and non-duct taped or sedated.

So, with the idea in mind that I'll have a backpack on with sweaty clothes and can't get too fancy because of my luggage what's some things to do in Manhattan?

All I have planned so far is a stop at Katz Diner for famous pastrami sandwich. Give me some ideas.

I'll bump this shamelessly probably one or two more times given the topic.

Just walking Manhattan can be a good day. Grab a pretzel, pizza slice and Italian Ice from vendors or mom and pop shops.
If you want to go upscale and impress...Del Frisco's (great steakhouse) or Mesa Grill (females dig Bobby Flay).

And yes go to Ground Zero.

Katz is very good, but Carnegie is better.

Oh, and something the chick might enjoy is walking around Chelsea going in and out of the various galleries.

as a New Yorker, Carnegie is the best sandwich, if you want want to call it that. What exactly are you looking to do? I can give a thousand ideas....

If you are by Times square...stop in at Jimmy's corner tavern on w 44th between 6th and 7th. it's owned by legendary boxing cut man Jimmy Glenn. A LOT of boxing nostalgia in the bar and the prices are cheap. a pint of Becks on tap was like $4 when I was there earlier this month.

Booked reservations way in advance hotel right across from statue with telescope in room to look at lady liberty, did the 5 hour line, the security was tougher than airport. My family and I were almost undressed before they told us to hurry before we missed the boat. Get off boat at statue island where I get in another long ass line to go into statue. After a couple hours we finally make our way to front where they ask for more tickets. How many tickets do I freaking need? They inform me I have tickets for the island and for ellis island afterwards, but not to go into the statue. To see the statue I would need separate tickets. Weird anyone would go to the island and not the giant &#$&&^ statue that takes up most of the space. I was mad, but I said ok where do I get them at?
"You have to do it from the mainland and do it way in advance."
I thought I would explode, so I got real huffy and puffy demanding to see someone in charge.
Then some foreign lady park ranger with attitude and not good english comes up and tells me there was nothing I could do and I needed to leave the line. Park rangers run the island, not cops. I told her where only my wife and her could hear that it was BS. She tells me if a curse again the park rangers can take me to a holding cell at the bottom of the statue. Guess there is no freedom of speech around the lady. Part of me thought at least i would be able to see the inside of the freaking statue. Another part of me thought, wow I don't want to be stuck on an island with some power hungry park rangers. So, I told her it was ok, I was friends with Yogi and bobo and I left.
***Moral of story: Statue of Liberty is awesome to see, I loved it, at least the outside of it, just make sure you get both tickets.

I live two blocks from Katz's and used to work next to Carnegie....

hit the east village, lower east side, check out the great restaurants, bars etc... If you wanna see the statue of liberty... Take THE BEAST... suped up bass boat that hauls ass all over the east river and hudson blaring arena rock... it is hilarious and fun.

Just ride the Staten Island ferry. It goes right past Liberty Island and it's free. Plus it's neat to ride on a big boat like that if you don't do it often. I wouldn't stand in line for five minutes to broil inside that damned thing.

And if you like military history, check out the USS Intrepid. Moored on the west side of Manhattan, it is way cool and has an amazing assortment of warplanes.

You did not miss much. No spectactular view from the crown and nothing of interest in the stairwell to the top.

I went in 2001 just months before 9/11. Security was not so tough back then.

Honestly dude we're winging it for the day. It's supposed to be a nice day so traveling on foot is no problem and I know taxis are an arm swing away.

Dinner at a NY deli, a museum or two like mentioned above (nothing that's gonna take up more than an hour or so) and drinks before getting back on the train with as much as possible in between for two peeps in sandles, t-shirts and shorts. I'd even consider a motel room at the Holiday Inn since we'll be right there and bringing some duds along if I can figure out the night.

What would you do with a date in Manhattan? When I go on vacation it's usually as very far away from possible. Just never done New York. I usually get in and get out when I'm there.

Take your class. Get two metrocards to take the subway. Grab the A or C train to Broadway-Nassau. Exit the subway, walk down Fulton to the South Street Seaport. Enjoy the day.

I've been to Manhattan twice. Both times I hit the Guggenhiem. I was floored both times seeing artists I thought I had little interest in seeing. That is the can't-miss site-seeing stop for me. Chelsea is cool too. But there are lots (and I mean LOTS) of galleries in that area. It's a bit overwhelming and there is just as much crap as there are gems.

I recommend both. The Guggenhiem is Awesome, but can be very crowded. Sure, you have some good galleries and some garbage ones in Chelsea but it's fun to walk around and jump in and out of the galleries.

A couple people have recommended Chelsea. If you wanna go there, you can also check out the Highline, which is an elevated train track converted into a park, so it's nice for a walk with a ladyfriend.
Central Park is probably the best spot for taking a lady, though.

I know you're going to hit up Katz's (which is better than Carnegie, don't listen to other people), but if you're still hungry later, which is doubtful, grab a slice of pizza at Artichoke on 14th and 1st, or get a small personal pie to go from Motorino on 12th and 1st.

If you are up for a little day drinking, check out The Frying Pan, right off the west side highway at 26th st. It's a boat in the hudson where you can just chill and drink and enjoy the weather. Nice spot.

Yeah, the Highline was kind of neat and we walked there from Chelsea.

False. Carnegie makes the best corned beef & pastrami in the world. Their potato salad is Awesome too.

That's a perfect example of the advice I'm looking for this weekend. A hearty rep. And to all as soon as I catch up.

Great place. Walk around and look for history and popular references - Wall Street, Madison Avenue, Bleeker Street (if you like Simon & Garfunkel), Alexander Hamilton's grave, Ground Zero, etc. Manhattan is infused into our culture a lot.

Get some good cheap pizza at a neighborhood pizza joint. Walk through Central Park. Maybe go see the Cooper-Hewitt Museum of Design, which I thought was really cool. I preferred the Museum of Modern Art over the Guggenheim, but your mileage may vary. The Guggenheim is a classic "here are great painters" museum and was nice, but the MoMA had a more broad range of art. When I was there a while back they had an exhibit that was something like "Art in everyday products" and it had stuff ranging from 1970s record players to cool drinking glasses. I liked it. And at the entrance they had a display of those little teardrop travel trailers.

I was just going to mention that little cemetery near Wall Street. That was neat. Robert Fulton is buried there as well.

It probably wouldn't work for Otter on this trip, but at some point I think it'd be cool to get a car and drive up the Hudson Valley to check out West Point and the mansions and stuff.

That was one of the most memorable things about New York, seeing that ancient church and tiny little cemetery surrounded on all sides by towering skyscrapers. It was surreal.

Yep. You can have a damn good day with no destination at all. Walk through Soho, Chinatown, Little Italy.....eat, drink, look around. I'm envious, that's a great way to spend a day.

I don't know how long you could stay in Manhattan before running out of things to see but it would be quite a while.

Grand Central is an incredible place, even if you're not taking a train. Amazing architecture, some nice little bars and all the people watching you could want.

Actually, people watching is a helluva way to spend some time in NY. Find a sidewalk cafe in Greenwich Village. You're guaranteed to see some interesting folks.

Other people have mentioned Central Park - it really is beautiful. I remember seeing horsedrawn carriages near the park as well.

Frying Pan and walk along the Hudson River Park
Bowery Museum, the Lower East Side, and Nolita (near Katz's)
have a drink at the Pourhouse (3rd ave and 11th st) the KU bar

if you get lucky get her to stay the night with you and then the next day try:

One other thing about New York - the street numbers are odd. In Chicago, each block starts a new 100 for addresses, so, for example, you know if you're in front of 200 West Madison, 300 West Madison is a block away. NEW YORK IS NOT LIKE THIS. I remember walking up one of the main north/south streets, thinking I was a block away from my destination when in reality I was about six blocks away from my destination. Also, in the Midtown area, the blocks on the east/west streets are about three blocks long. That can throw you off a bit.

And lastly, it would probably be prudent not to stray north of Central Park.

I loved seeing the top of the Roc, and empire state building. Also, have to recommend broadway. I took my family to see greese on broadway, and everyone loved it! Chicks really dig it though, so makes for a good date. Hope you have fun.

Yes if you do the "go to the top of a building thing"... got to Rock Center, not the Empire State Bulding

I think he wanted a coors lite or some shit..the servers there carry like 50 mugs at a time bringing beer to tables..they are soaking wet with beer.

For a drink in a nice, but not too overdone, place, have the famous Red Snapper (Bloody Mary) at St. Regis Hotel. They claim they invented the cocktail.

Walk around TriBeCa and look for Robert De Niro. Maybe he's in his restaurants.

Go to Chinatown and buy your lady a nice $7 gold watch. To show her you really care, bargain. But be polite about it.

Look for the statue of V.I. Lenin peering over to Wall Street.

Go up and down the blocks near the main library (42nd st?) and read the little squares on the sidewalk.

Go to the MET. It's free. You can walk around the place where they collect money.

Go to Serendipity for the FRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrooooooooooozeeeeeeeeeeeeennnnn Hot chocolate

Check out Strawberry Fields in Central Park and bring a guitar and strum it and cry and lay flowers.

Go to Empire State Building, go to the top, and pretend you are going to throw her off. Then tell her that that's how your mother died.

Challenge the Naked Cowboy man to a fight for her hand in marriage in Times Square

Go to the Bronx Zoo, and when you see mammals mate with each other, ask if she wouldn't mind taking a few pictures while you set up your video camera.

I'm going to give The Museum of Natural History a peak but it's packed because of the weekend I think we're off to a day of bar hopping and see the sights mentioned above.

I forgot about Coney Island - it's pretty cool. I understand they've cleaned it up considerably since I was last there.

All this talk about New York is sort of making want to go back for another visit. I haven't been there since '99.

Manhattan is ****ing awesome. Period.
