Automotive Problem (HALP)

I'll give a sizeable rep/casino cash donation to whoever correctly diagnoses my problem. I'm taking it to "the shop" tomorrow.

2005 Ford Escape V6
Turn key, takes a few seconds to start
Makes a "weird" noise when idling, a knocking noise
Drives normally, unless you are stopped, in which it makes previously mentioned noise, and sort of "shakes" a tad bit, like you are tapping on the brakes
ENGINE LIGHT JUST CAME ON. DANGER.

Sofa King 07-23-2010 07:29 AM

Something with the Air Conditioner.

EDIT: Actually, i'm serious. i used to have a 95 Neon and an old Lumina. both were fairly high mileage, and both had symtoms like those when the AC unit went out. i doubt i'm right, but it's a guess noone else would have guessed, i'm guessing.

EDIT EDIT: AC Compressor perhaps?

What color is your car?

Dartgod 07-23-2010 07:33 AM

I see.

If you had a warning light that used the word danger, you should turn it off immediately and have it towed where it needs to go.

It sounds like bad hoo doo or deep doo doo.

cylinder misfire

Do you (or a buddy) have an OBD II reader by any chance. If so, plug it in and pull the fault code(s). It sounds like more than one problem to be honest with you. You may be looking at a failing starter and or a loose connection with the first problem and your lifters or rods may have issues for the second. You could also have a bad spark plug wire, or coil wire for the second. Any chance any water got under any spark plug wires? Did you wash the engine lately, or got through any deep water? Check all your wire connections. How's the oil level?

bevischief 07-23-2010 07:51 AM

emissons sensor.

Heh

Or the Battery torque modulator. ;)

My wife had a 04 Escape with the V-6. Hers had symptoms much like you are describing and we took it to the shop. Turned out to be something really minor that I don't even remember what it was.

OnTheWarpath15 07-23-2010 08:03 AM

Probably a bad Fetzer valve.

You're going to need some 3-in-1 oil and some gauze pads.

MOhillbilly 07-23-2010 08:09 AM

sounds like you are about to drop a valve.

bevischief 07-23-2010 08:10 AM

Bad Flux capacitor.

Or a duce.

With so many emissions and computer sensors on these cars, it is very difficult to diagnose without the plug in tool.

Autozone has a simple one, that only detects the most obvious issues, that they will do no charge.

But my guess, it is a throttle position sensor (a wear item), which is giving bad information, to the rest of the system. To me that would be a clue on the hard start, and potential fat/lean issue causing the rough running.

But once again, without the proper diagnostic tools, it is just an educated guess.

EWOK 07-23-2010 08:17 AM

Get it looked at because there are too many things that can cause this. Throttle position sensor, vacuum leak, EGR valve, leaking fuel injector, and the list continues.

SAUTO 07-23-2010 08:22 AM

im gonna bet its a bad coil pack.

if it shows a miss on 1, 3, or 5 make SURE they replace that coil along with the plug. labor to pull the plenum costs more that a coil, at least when i do them

Brock 07-23-2010 08:23 AM

Dust off that change purse and buy a code reader.

gonna need 'bout ten quarts of anti-freeze, preferably Prestone. No, no make that Quaker State

SAUTO 07-23-2010 08:24 AM

on the front bank you can try a plug first because the plenum doesnt have to be removed.

trust me on this i have eaten labor before to re pull the plenum on a faulty coil, but most shops wouldnt eat that.

Extra Point 07-23-2010 08:28 AM

Camshaft position sensor housing worn? Dave at Extra Mile can help you. 785-320-7335. He specializes in imports, but does a lot of domestics. Have him pull the codes.

boogblaster 07-23-2010 08:31 AM

Its a sensor or a plug or plug wire

Extra Point 07-23-2010 08:37 AM

Hey, how's the furnace working, these days?ROFL

Baby Lee 07-23-2010 08:43 AM

Is it lagging in power? If so, along with the knocking and shaking, I'd guess a bad spark plug/wire [or 2].

This one right here. This post right above me that I have quoted. This is probably your most likely cause.

kstater 07-23-2010 10:46 AM

It's a Ford.

Same problem, different vehicle. My car didn't run weird/make a weird noise when it happened, though.
