For the KC area Planeteers only...

If you are looking up information on a local restaurant... which of these is your likely "go to" source...

Poll to follow...

Any input is greatly appreciated...

Just doing my best to get along ...

bevischief 09-23-2010 12:21 PM

Google to see if the restaurant has a website, KC star, and the Pitch.

nstygma 09-23-2010 12:55 PM

a combo of the google place page & the actual website

KCUnited 09-23-2010 01:05 PM

I voted Yelp, but I use The Pitch, Chowhound, Urbanspoon, Google, and the establishments site almost as equally. I'd throw a tripadvisor in there as well.

ToxSocks 09-23-2010 01:16 PM

I voted! HA! I Hope i ****ed up your poll.......excluding me.......Ha!

KC Area only, douche. You aren't in Kansas City anymore. You're in Washington, D.C. Oops, check that. Where are you now?

Duck Dog 09-23-2010 01:29 PM

The wife uses Urban Spoon and I use google.

Bewbies 09-23-2010 01:46 PM

I'm not from KC, but I did stay at a Holiday Inn Express last night.

Stewie 09-23-2010 02:32 PM

I google the name of the restaurant. That usually brings up urban spoon, yelp, etc. One stop searching.

But... once you get the results, which of those is your go to spot?

teedubya 09-23-2010 02:54 PM

Google maps. And look for them that have 4+ reviews.

BigOlChiefsfan 09-23-2010 03:15 PM

In KC, I usually pay more attention to the Pitch. Chowhound and Urban Spoon is full of restaurant reviewers I probably won't try to rescue from a burning car. Even when the fire is really small, if you get my drift. But the Pitch's longtime food reviewer, Charles Ferruzza, knows his stuff. And for the record, he probably doesn't get enough carries.

None are weighted more than the other. I really like this restaurant blogger. He's local and finds the quirky little spots.

Because I had some preconceived notions of what was most used... and they are somewhat off... In towns like Austin and Dallas, people use Yelp and Google Places more than it seems they are used in KC.. KC seems to still be using more "local" solutions i.e. The Pitch and the restaurant's actual page.

This poll is to clear it all up for me...

(btw, quite a few "local" sites like the Pitch are actually owned by the Village Voice Media chain... I just found that out today)

Reaper16 09-23-2010 05:55 PM

Me. Kansas Citians should literally just come and ask me.

Haha, he is a pretty good resource.

Aside from that my primary resource is my Twitter followers and the Pitch. With a dash of Google Places and Yelp from time to time.

I am surprised The Pitch has as much influence as it does... The Austin Chronicle and Dallas Observer have kinda fell out of favor ... it's very Yelp-centric here now.

BUT, this is the kind of data I need. Thanks guys.. keep the opinions coming.

Yea, its interesting to see why things do or do not catch. But...ya know? They just seem to have the info.

|Zach| 09-23-2010 06:06 PM

BTW Austin,

I hit Jack Gage's Tavern. Your friends place.

I was really impressed.

The Elder 09-23-2010 06:10 PM

When all else fails you just head to one of three destinations. #1 Jess & Jims, #2 Herford House, #3 Aurther Bryants. This is all you need to survive in Kansas City.

The Pitch is everywhere here in KC, something free to read while eating.

This may be wrong, but I actually think it may be that KC is just a bit behind the curve... it was exactly the same way in Austin just 2-3 years ago... but I could be wrong. And it likely is Yelp's fault, they probably haven't made a big push in KC yet... of course, with Google Place Pages coming of age... Yelp may never get traction in KC.

Cool! Yeah, that's my cousin's place.

If you have any suggestions for ways to improve it, I'm sure he'd appreciate the feedback.

KCSupersized 09-23-2010 07:19 PM

The Pitch

wazu 09-23-2010 07:30 PM

I'd be wary of poll results here. A lot of people may just pick "The Pitch" cause they want to seem like true, hardcore locals. I use Yelp everywhere, including here. Other sources are welcome, but it's the "go-to".

You amaze me. You are so incredibly tubular.

HemiEd 09-23-2010 08:25 PM

Not from KC, but I drive through there a lot. If it has a drive thru, it deserves consideration. :D

Yelp has been big in KC for like two years now. Big enough that there are KC blogs where people make fun of shitty Yelp reviews.

BryanBusby 09-24-2010 02:47 AM

Jason Whitlock of course
