Jovan Belcher Appreciation Thread

This guy needs some love. IMO, he's one of the Chief's unsung heroes. This guy has been making plays in the run game for the last three weeks and has been a big part of our improved run D. Dude is a thumper at MLB.

Jovan, if you read CP, this thread is for YOU my friend.

Chief Faithful 09-27-2010 11:43 AM

I thought Belcher had his best day as a pro against the 49ers.

Skyy God 09-27-2010 11:45 AM

There's been a strong CP undercurrent for he and DJ to start. Excellent play in the run game vs. the 49ers.

Priest31kc 09-27-2010 11:48 AM

Yes, what a steal he's been.

DJ's left nut 09-27-2010 11:49 AM

I said in my 'thoughts' thread after the Chargers game that I thought he was our best 'backer, despite all the accolades for DJ.

Belcher has been very strong this season, especially against the run. He's bringing lumber into the hole and has been very consistent in hitting the right gap.

He's light years better than last season and appears to be a legitimate starting caliber LBer right now.

Props, Jovan. Props.

I think it helps that Jovan can be the thumper and DJ can use his speed to make plays. They kind of play off of each other.

Pissed I got to wait 2 weeks to rock my black extended neck brace to work for Red Friday.

Reaper16 09-27-2010 11:57 AM

Liked him ever since I first posted his UDFA signing.

Molitoth 09-27-2010 12:13 PM

He's great, and I love his Brian Cox neckguard.

stevieray 09-27-2010 12:17 PM

....I like his ST's play as well.

DaneMcCloud 09-27-2010 12:19 PM

I liked Belcher last year and saw improvement as the year went on. He's continuing to improve each week and may become a very good ILB.

mcaj22 09-27-2010 12:19 PM

does anyone know why he has that crazy neck guard? Does he legitimately have back/neck problems and uses it for his safety or is it just for show? he doesn't seem like the flashy type.

It seems to me that his neck guard is too far back to actually prevent any neck injury. I mean i guess it will prevent his head from being bent all the back to his spine but ...... lol

Hug it Out Dan 09-27-2010 12:22 PM

Brian Cox wannabe.

Wallcrawler 09-27-2010 12:24 PM

When you hit as hard as he hits, it doesnt hurt to have the extra protection there. Some of his collisions with ball carriers resemble car crashes.

So, he was a UDFA?

Dynamite. Kid's got potential to be a stud.

Undrafted free agent rookie out of Maine. When he got into the starting lineup last year with four games left in the schedule, our defense started to improve.

He's been a ****ing beast so far this season and is a major reason why our run defense is so drastically improved.

The kid has got amazing instincts and can find the ball and get to it with force.

What has surprised me the most so far this year is his strength. He has been blowing back guards and standing guys up. For an "undersized" guy in a Mike role in a 3-4, he's kicking the shit out of people.

Absolute stud whose been as good as Flowers so far this season.

He and Weigmann are hugely responsible for the Chiefs resurgence.

Belcher has a stone cold BEASTLY play on GIF'D UP this week.

****, he was awesome.

'Hamas' Jenkins 09-27-2010 11:19 PM

He was a good player coming out and he should have started last year over Mays. That said, he's doing tremendously with the opportunity.

BossChief 09-27-2010 11:22 PM

I was calling for him to start most of last year.

I don't know, I am just frustrated with everything. It seems like he is getting burnt a lot on passing downs and missing a few key tackles.

Of course, if Crennel ever decided to dial up the pressure he wouldn't have to cover nearly as long.

He's been solid and has made a lot of improvements from last season.

I understand the frustration very much. It's been that kind of (hollow) season.

Agreed.

Of course, what I said before goes for just about every defensive player on the field. Missed coverage, missed key tackles, etc.

This has generally always been true in the NFL.

Offense is about talent.

Defense is about attitude.

I personally still think we don't have a guy on the defense that carries that "attitude".

Well we do, but he's out with an ACL tear. We REALLY miss Berry in more ways that people realize.

Absolutely.

It's about moving as a cohesive unit, and having that one guy that will rip your head off if you **** up.

It's contagious. Once the ball gets rolling, the defense will gain more and more confidence. But if there is one weak link that continues to fail (Safety), there is no sense of trust.

Wasn't Belcher only really exposed in coverage b/c DJ was blitzing instead of dropping into coverage.

• A Chiefs starter who might be out of a first-team role next season is ILB Jovan Belcher. Despite Belcher having finished second on the team in tackles with 87, there is a belief the team will try to upgrade the spot next to star ILB Derrick Johnson next season. Brandon Siler, who was placed on I.R. in training camp, just signed a one-year extension with the team, and inside 'backer is expected to be a position the team targets in the upcoming draft. Belcher, who went undrafted out of Maine in 2009, was called "an impressive player considering where he came from" by a team insider, who also added "but Belcher just isn't very good overall."

I have been saying this for 2 years.

Urc Burry 01-16-2012 07:41 PM

225 as an ILB isn't going to cut it in the NFL... He was a nice surprise as an UDFA but shouldn't start going forward.

Munson 01-16-2012 07:42 PM

He's a serviceable ILB. If he loses his starting spot next season, we should keep him around as a back up LB and special teams player.

Caseyguyrr 01-16-2012 07:43 PM

he went to Maine, know anyone drafted out of Maine?

What linebacker do we go for as a thumper? Hightower? Burfict? I don't think Kuechly would be a good fit

I'll say this, with Belcher, this is a top defense. So if you can find someone better, this defense might be one of if not the best in the league.

That is where he belongs. He isn't a starting caliber ILB

I like Hightower. Burfict is a "thumper" though. An uncontrolled, inconsistent "thumper".

BossChief 01-16-2012 07:55 PM

Belcher is another guy that deserves an extension.

He isn't as prominent to keep as Carr is for the defense, but he is another part of the young core of this defense that is seemingly ascending.

It would be a mistake to let him walk.

The only reason you sign him is for depth purposes which would be ok by me. He shouldn't be starting though

Right now no one but they can find a FA or draft a guy that is better than he is. Maybe Siler who knows..

ArrowheadMagic 01-16-2012 08:17 PM

Finding a replacement for Belcher is a luxury, not a need. Belcher would make a good depth guy, decent starter.

BossChief 01-16-2012 08:18 PM

I'd like to see the source of that clip.

Jovan Belcher started every game the last two years and is a big part of an ascending unit that ended the year 11th in total defense even without Eric Berry.

I could see us taking an ILB, but not in the first two rounds.

We would be far better served to take a LG/C, RT or NT and obviously the best move is going up to get a qb.

ILB is not an immediate need for this team.

Hammock Parties 01-16-2012 08:18 PM

He's a Thumper, he's like an old school linebacker. Just throws his body everywhere lol. I like the dude.

I wanna see Belcher back at ILB next season.
He's young, and improving.

Nothing. Typical Chiefs fans type of stuff. If we don't have a probowler at every position we must improve and whoever holds the current position is worthless.
